Water is part of what opal is — typically three to ten per cent of it by weight, held within an amorphous silica structure rather than a crystal lattice. That is why the gem dislikes prolonged dry heat, sudden temperature change and ultrasonic cleaning, and why it prefers a life away from hard knocks. The stone is assessed by our FGAA-qualified gemmologist in Sydney, and the piece is designed in-house and handcrafted in our own workshop.
