Unheated Sapphires

An unheated sapphire is exactly as the earth made it — a natural stone that has never been heated or treated to alter its colour or clarity. Fine unheated sapphires can command a premium when colour, clarity, cut, size and origin are otherwise comparable, but treatment status is only one component of value. Every unheated sapphire we offer is verified and graded in-house by our FGAA gemmologist.

Most sapphires on the world market are heated. We believe in radical transparency: every treatment is disclosed, every significant stone can be independently certified, and every stone carries free lifetime re-authentication — our name behind each one.

Common questions

What does unheated sapphire mean, and why does it matter?

Unheated means the sapphire has never been subjected to heat treatment — it is exactly as it formed in the earth, with its natural colour and clarity intact. It matters because untreated natural stones are rarer and more valuable, and because knowing what was done to a stone is the difference between buying wisely and buying blind.

What is the difference between heated and unheated sapphire?

Heated sapphires have undergone a permanent, widely accepted treatment intended to improve colour and/or clarity, and that treatment should always be disclosed. Unheated sapphires have had no such treatment. Both are genuine natural sapphires, but unheated stones are rarer and command a premium of roughly 50 to 300 percent.

Are unheated sapphires more expensive?

They can be. Fine unheated sapphires are less common, but there is no universal premium: value still depends on colour, clarity, cut, carat weight, origin, documentation and market demand.

How do I know a sapphire is genuinely unheated?

Insist on independent laboratory certification stating 'no indications of heating', and full written disclosure from the seller. Our gemmologist examines each stone's inclusions — a sapphire's diary, which reveal treatment — and we can arrange an independent report for any significant stone.
