How can I tell if a sapphire has been treated?
Only a gemmological laboratory can say definitively, by examining inclusions and internal features. Always ask for an independent certificate on significant stones, plus full written disclosure from the seller.
Which sapphire treatments must be disclosed?
All of them. Heating must be declared, and more invasive processes such as beryllium diffusion or fracture filling must be disclosed explicitly, as they dramatically affect value.
Are lab-grown sapphires the same as natural sapphires?
Chemically they are both corundum, but lab-grown stones are not rare and do not hold value the way natural sapphires do. Ministry of Gems sells natural stones only.
