Ceylon sapphires are natural sapphires from Sri Lanka — long prized for their luminous cornflower and royal blues. At Ministry of Gems our Ceylon sapphires come from our own family gem fields around Ratnapura, carried through three generations of heritage reaching back to the 1960s. Every stone is cut, graded and disclosed in-house by our FGAA gemmologist, many of them unheated, and all certified natural.

A Ceylon sapphire is a natural sapphire mined in Sri Lanka (historically called Ceylon), renowned for luminous blues — from soft cornflower to vivid royal — as well as pinks, yellows and the rare padparadscha. Sri Lanka has produced sapphires for over two thousand years.
Are Ceylon sapphires better than Australian sapphires?
Neither is simply better — they differ in character. Ceylon sapphires are prized for bright, luminous blues and historic prestige; Australian sapphires offer inky blues and distinctive teal and parti colours from the basalt belt. How much does a Ceylon sapphire cost per carat?
As a general compass in AUD: attractive commercial Ceylon sapphires under one carat often sit in the hundreds; fine one-to-two carat stones from about a thousand to several thousand; and exceptional colour, larger sizes and unheated certification reach five figures and beyond. What makes an unheated Ceylon sapphire more valuable?
An unheated sapphire is exactly as the earth made it — never treated to improve colour or clarity. That natural rarity commands a premium; fine unheated stones can be worth 50 to 300 percent more than comparable heated ones, which is why independent certification matters.
