Most gems get their colour from chemistry — traces of iron, chromium, copper. Opal gets it from architecture: stacked silica spheres of near-identical size, splitting white light into the flashes that move as the stone turns. Nothing else in the gem world works quite that way. It is also the least forgiving species in the case at 5.5 to 6.5 Mohs, so warm soapy water only. Designed by Ministry of Gems, handcrafted in our workshop, and assessed by our FGAA gemmologist.
