Foreword: The Stone Comes First

Late last spring a client emailed me a CAD render she had commissioned from a studio overseas. It was a handsome drawing: a six-claw solitaire on a tapered band, drawn around a calibrated 6.5 mm round stone that did not yet exist. She had paid for the design first, reasoning that the ring was the decision and the stone was merely shopping. Then she visited our Sydney studio and fell for a teal sapphire from our own Ceylon cutting house — an oval, 7.4 by 5.9 mm, with the faint asymmetry hand-cut stones carry like a signature. The render could not take it. The claws landed in the wrong places, the gallery was too shallow for the oval's pavilion, and the taper that framed a round so sweetly made the oval look borrowed. She paid for a second design and kept the stone. Faced with the same choice, many people keep the drawing — and lose the stone.

That, in a single commission, is the reason this handbook exists.

The doctrine

Our doctrine is short enough to fit on a bench tag: the stone comes first. A ring is a small piece of architecture with one client, and the client is the stone. Its exact millimetre dimensions place the claws; its depth sets the gallery; its hue chooses the metal; its toughness dictates the engineering; its character earns the design. Reverse the order and every one of those decisions is made blind, then defended afterwards. This book exists to spare you that sequence.

Bespoke, the word

The word deserves defining, because the trade has stretched it. Choosing a stone and a band from a menu of templates is customisation, and there is nothing wrong with it — an honest template ring can be a very good ring. Bespoke means the design starts from nothing but the stone and the life it is joining: a drawing that has never existed before and will not be repeated. This book covers the full bespoke journey, but its logic serves both paths, because a template ring still deserves the right metal, sound claws and honest paperwork.

What this book is, and is not

Two earlier volumes stand either side of this one. Our Coloured-Stone Engagement Ring handbook covers choosing a species for a lifetime of wear; The Price of Colour covers what stones cost and why. This book assumes the stone question is nearly settled and turns to the part the trade rarely explains: the making. Chapter 2 argues the order of operations — why the stone must precede the setting, and what happens when it does not. Chapter 3 takes up metal: gold's colours and carats, platinum's temperament, and what each gives a coloured stone. Chapter 4 is the engineering of settings — claws, bezels and the physics of a working hand. Chapter 5 walks the whole journey from wax to gold. Chapters 6 and 7 deal in time and money, the two things every commission spends. Chapter 8 is the handover: the questions, the paperwork and the life after.

Why now

More people are commissioning coloured-stone rings than at any point in my working life. US retailers told JCK in June 2026 that coloured gemstones are surging in bridal jewellery, driven partly by couples wanting distinction from now-ubiquitous lab-grown diamonds; Professional Jeweller's trend forecast for 2026 reported a sharp quarter-on-quarter rise in searches for gemstone rings. Most of those couples are meeting the bespoke process for the first time, without a map, in a trade that prefers to sell them a photograph of a setting. This is the map.

Our position, stated plainly

We are participants in the market this book describes. Ministry of Gems® grew out of three generations in the Ceylon gem fields, reaching back to the 1960s; we mine, we cut in our own workshop, and every stone we offer crosses my desk in Sydney before it is listed. We filmed our jewellery factory at work for From Wax to Gold, and Chapter 5 leans on what those cameras saw. In other words: we sell what this book teaches you to commission. Read with that in mind. The advice is written to hold up with any maker, anywhere — the daylight rule, the engineering logic and the plain-words invoice do not care whose name is on the door.

How to read it

Read Chapter 2 before you brief anyone, including us. Take the rest in any order, but let Chapter 8's ten questions sit in your pocket at every consultation. And keep hold of the rule this series repeats at every close, because the whole book is scaffolding around it: buy the stone you cannot stop looking at — then build the ring that deserves it.

The Stone Before the Setting: Why the Reverse Fails

Every sound commission begins with a loose stone in daylight — and designs drawn first almost always fail the stone they eventually receive.

Ring design has an order of operations, and most first-time commissioners have been taught it backwards. Jewellery retail leads with settings: galleries of styles sorted by silhouette, each photographed with an interchangeable stone, each captioned as though the mount were the decision and the gem a finishing touch. For diamond rings the habit almost works, because diamonds are cut to standard proportions and traded in calibrated sizes; a 6.5 mm round brilliant is a commodity a designer can safely draw around. Coloured stones offer no such promise.

The most common mistake

The most common mistake in bespoke commissioning is falling in love with a setting. It is an easy mistake to sell, because settings photograph consistently, carry style names and can be reproduced on demand, while fine coloured stones are individual, awkward and slow to source. But a design drawn before the stone exists is a set of demands the stone must meet: a precise diameter, a precise depth, a colour that flatters side stones and metal chosen in the abstract. You are no longer shopping for the stone that stops you; you are shopping for the stone that fits the hole.

The failure has three endings, all paid for by you. Sometimes the stone the design demands cannot be found at your budget, and the search dies. Sometimes it can be found, and is dull — a stone chosen by tape measure. And sometimes, as with the client in the Foreword, you meet the right stone anyway and pay for the design twice. Why calibrated thinking fails colour

A cutter with fine sapphire rough is solving for two things: the best colour the crystal can give, and the least weight lost getting it. Calibrated sizes come a distant third. The result is that almost every fine coloured stone is a slightly odd size — 7.1 by 5.8 mm, 6.9 by 6.7 mm — and the odder measurements are often the better stones, because the cutter refused to grind away colour to hit a chart. Depth compounds the problem: coloured stones are frequently cut deeper than diamond proportions, to hold or deepen colour, and a gallery drawn for diamond depth will not house them. When we recut in our own Ceylon workshop, the brief is always the stone's colour, never a mount's dimensions.

What the stone decides

Handed a real stone, the design questions mostly answer themselves. The measurements place the claws. The pavilion sets the gallery and how low the ring can sit. The hue narrows the metal — a decision Chapter 3 takes slowly — and the colour temperature of any side stones with it. The species' toughness picks the architecture, which is Chapter 4's whole subject. Even the band takes orders: a broad oval wants a shank that agrees with it, not one inherited from a round. The client decides the character — quiet or sculptural, vintage or spare — but the stone decides the constraints, and good design is what happens inside them.

Inherited stones deserve a sentence here, because they are the oldest stone-first path there is. A grandmother's sapphire arriving loose from a worn-out mount is already obeying this chapter: the stone exists, and the design must serve it. The only extra step is a gemmological check before design begins — old mounts hide chips, and old paperwork hides treatments — which is precisely what an assessment appointment is for.

Daylight before drawings

So the first act of a commission is not a drawing; it is a viewing. Ask to see the stone loose — unmounted stones hide nothing — on the open hand, at arm's length, in daylight: a south-facing window here in Sydney, north-facing in the northern hemisphere. This is the series' oldest discipline, and it earns its keep doubly here, because the stone you choose will be looked at through metal for decades. It is also a good moment to look past the traditional blues. Jeweller Magazine noted in February 2026 that Australia's basalt-hosted sapphires — the blue-green, parti and teal stones once dismissed as too dark — are now in strong international demand, from fields that have supplied sapphire for over a century; our /collections/teal-sapphires is built on exactly that material, cut in our own workshop. Expect company at the window either way: that Professional Jeweller forecast from Chapter 1 measured a sharp rise in gemstone-ring searches, and good stones do not queue politely.

Do this before you brief anyone

> A setting commissioned before the stone is a frame bought before the painting.

This week, open the folder of ring pictures you have been saving and cover the settings with a thumb. Note which stones you keep returning to — the colour family, the shape, the mood — and then write three lines about your days: whether you work with your hands, wear gloves, lift weights, garden. Bring those notes, an honest budget and nothing else to a first consultation. A maker can build a great ring from a paragraph about a life and a stone you love; the reverse — a folder of settings and no stone — builds only compromises.

The Metal Question: Gold, Platinum and What Coloured Stones Ask of Them

Gold's colours are recipes and platinum is a temperament — what each alloy gives a coloured stone, and what it quietly takes away.

Pure gold is a hopeless material for a ring. At 24 carats it is soft enough to mark with a thumbnail, drags to a dull shine, and will not hold a claw's tension through a season. Everything we call a gold ring is really an alloy ring — gold disciplined with other metals — and the recipe decides far more than the colour.

Gold is a recipe

Carat, for metal, is a fraction: 18ct is 750 parts gold per thousand, 14ct is 585, and 9ct — common in Australian jewellery — is 375. The non-gold balance is where behaviour lives: hardness, springiness, colour, how the metal casts and how it takes a polish. Our bespoke default is 18ct, and that is not snobbery. Below it the colour thins and some alloys grow brittle; above it the metal is too soft to guard a stone. 9ct has an honest place in budget work and takes knocks well, but a bespoke centre stone deserves the deeper colour and better bench manners of 750. Alloy also decides the ring's future: an 18ct shank sizes cleanly through decades of changing knuckles, which matters more than any showroom quality.

The three colours

Yellow gold balances silver and copper against the gold: a forgiving, ductile alloy, easy to size and repair, and the colour most people mean when they say gold. Rose gold is copper-rich; it work-hardens as it is shaped, wears well, and its blush can deepen slightly over the years as the copper ages. Some rose alloys are brittle in thin sections — a maker's problem to engineer around, not a reason to avoid the colour. White gold is gold bleached with white metals: palladium in most serious Australian work, nickel in some imported pieces, and the difference matters because nickel is a common contact allergen, restricted in European jewellery. Ask any maker which white alloy they cast. Know what you are buying optically, too: white gold is naturally a warm grey, and the bright mirror finish comes from rhodium, a plated skin that wears at the friction points within a year or three of daily wear. Replating is routine maintenance, ten minutes of workshop time — a fact of the metal, not a fault in the ring.

Platinum, the other temperament

Platinum for fine work is usually 950 — 950 parts per thousand, alloyed with small amounts of other white metals. It is noticeably denser than gold; the same design weighs roughly a third more in the hand, which some clients love as substance and others tire of. It is naturally white, never plated, and kind to sensitive skin. Its defining habit is how it wears: scratched gold sheds metal, while scratched platinum mostly displaces it, so a platinum ring dulls to a soft satin patina while keeping its mass — and its claws — for decades. Setters trust platinum claws precisely because the metal is ductile: it bends before it snaps. The cost is mostly labour. Platinum melts far hotter than gold, wants its own tools and files, and punishes a careless polish, so the same design honestly costs more to make in it.

Metal is part of the stone's colour

> Metal is not the backdrop to a stone's colour; it is an ingredient in it.

Whatever wraps a stone is reflected into it. A pavilion gathers light from around itself, and metal is part of that light. Yellow gold lends warmth: it flatters ruby, padparadscha, spessartine and warm parti sapphires, but it can push a teal towards green and take the coolness off a fine blue. White metals are neutral hosts that let a blue stay blue. Rose gold is generous to peach, lavender spinel and the softer pinks. A bezel amplifies whichever metal you choose, because the metal rings the stone completely — hold that thought for Chapter 4. There is also a two-metal answer the trade has used for a century: a white-metal head to keep the stone's colour honest, on a yellow shank to keep the hand warm. Do not decide any of this in theory. Bring the loose stone to the daylight window and lay it against the metals; ten minutes of looking outranks any chart.

Matching metal to the job

One last pairing rule, mechanical rather than optical. Claws take the wear in a ring's life, and soft claws over a hard stone wear quickly — high-gold claws around a sapphire will need retipping years before a platinum head does. The workshop classic of a platinum head on an 18ct gold shank exists for exactly that reason, and we build it often. Silver, for completeness: a lovely metal for many things and the wrong one for this job, too soft to hold a centre stone through daily wear. Choose the metal the way you would choose a material for a roof — for the weather it will live in, with the colour as the reward.

Engineering the Setting: Protection Before Prettiness

Bezels, claws and the physics of a working hand — a setting is safety equipment first and jewellery second.

Every setting is an answer to one question: what will this ring hit? Not whether — a daily ring meets doorframes, car doors, dumbbells, benchtops and beach sand, thousands of small collisions a year — but where the blows will land and what stands between them and the stone. That is why we ask new clients about gloves and gyms before we ask about style.

Hardness is not toughness

Two words the trade blurs and the bench never does. Hardness is resistance to scratching; toughness is resistance to chipping and breaking; and a species can hold one and lack the other. Sapphire and ruby have both, which is why corundum forgives almost any architecture. Emerald resists scratches yet is brittle, because the jardin that gives it character also gives it fault lines. Tanzanite carries a perfect cleavage — a plane along which one sharp knock can split it. Opal is soft and delicate on both counts. Spinel and the garnets, for the record, are quiet all-rounders with no cleavage and honest toughness, which is one reason benches like setting them. Our engagement-ring handbook ranks the species for daily wear at chapter length; here the question is narrower and practical — given your stone, what should the metal around it do?

Claws

Claws — prongs, in American — hold the stone with the least metal and the most light. Four claws show more stone; six spread the duty, so the stone survives losing one; either way a claw is a wear part, rubbed thin by years of use and rebuilt by retipping. Shape matters as much as count. The cut corners of an emerald cut exist because square corners are where blows concentrate, and any pointed or cornered stone — princess, pear, marquise, kite — wants a v-claw cradling the point. Chapter 3's rule returns here: platinum claws bend and hold, high-gold claws wear faster and forgive more gently, and the choice is engineering before it is taste. One more join between chapters: retipping is torch work, and a torch near an oiled emerald or a fracture-filled stone is a hazard — so claws guarding delicate species should be built heavier on day one and serviced by a bench with a laser.

Bezels

A bezel runs a continuous collar of metal around the girdle — the stone's thin, chippable equator — and it protects that girdle better than any arrangement of claws. It cannot snag, it lowers the profile, and it shrugs off the glancing blows that snap claws. The price is light from the sides and a rim of metal in the face-up view. For diamonds that price is high; for coloured stones it is small, because a coloured stone's beauty lives in body colour more than in fire — one reason the bezel is enjoying an honest revival in coloured bespoke work. Half-bezels guard the vulnerable ends and leave the flanks open to light. The bezel's quieter cousin deserves a mention too: the flush or gypsy setting, where the stone sinks into the band itself. It sits lower on the hand than anything else in the playbook and is a fine answer for trades and gyms — though in a bespoke ring it is usually a supporting act, guarding side stones rather than the principal. For emerald, opal, tanzanite and moonstone, a bezel or something equally protective is not a style choice; it is the engineering the species asks for.

What the bench must know

Treatment disclosure is usually argued as ethics. At the bench it is safety. A lead-glass composite ruby is damaged by the pickle — the workshop's routine acid bath — and by torch heat, so an undisclosed composite can be ruined by ordinary service work. An oiled emerald must be kept from the ultrasonic tank and from heat. Tourmaline and peridot resent sudden temperature change, and peridot dislikes the pickle too. None of this makes treated stones bad, and almost all of it is managed easily by a workshop that knows. What it makes is a rule: your maker must have the stone's treatment status in writing before design begins, because the setter is not only honouring your ethics — they are trying not to hurt your stone.

Height, depth and the working hand

Coloured stones are often cut deep, and the design must house the pavilion honestly: an open basket that gives it room and air, not a stilted tower that lifts the stone into harm's way. Low-set rings survive gloves, gyms and toddlers; height is glamour that invoices you later. A halo of small stones can act as a sacrificial rail around the centre — the halo takes the scrape — at the cost of more edges to snag and more small claws to maintain. There are no free protections, only priced ones. Opal deserves the closing word, because it is where engineering and honesty meet. Opal is moving from the souvenir shelf into serious luxury — Jeweller Magazine reported in March 2026 on its take-up by international designers, with a CIBJO Opal Guide formalising classification and treatment disclosure due in September 2026 — and an opal ring wants a bezel and a written treatment status in equal measure.

From Wax to Gold: How a Ring Is Actually Made

Brief, sketch, wax, fire, metal, nerve — the journey a ring makes before it ever touches a hand.

Midway through our film From Wax to Gold there is a shot I never tire of: a wax tree — a dozen rings budding from a central stem — being lowered into a steel flask and drowned in liquid plaster. Nothing about it looks like jewellery. That is the point. Between an approved design and a finished ring lies a process closer to foundry work than to romance, and clients who understand it make better decisions at every stage of it.

The brief and the sketch

Every commission begins as a conversation, and the conversation becomes a brief: the stone's exact measurements and treatment status, the life facts — hands, work, gloves, sports — the budget, and references offered as mood rather than instruction. From the brief come sketches. Pencil is cheap and fearless; this is the stage to be wrong at speed, and a good designer will show you options they expect you to reject, because the rejections map your taste more precisely than the approvals do.

CAD and wax

The chosen sketch becomes a CAD model, built to a tenth of a millimetre around your actual stone's dimensions — which is why the stone must exist first; the model is tailoring, not illustration. You will be shown renders, and renders deserve a warning: they flatter. They light the stone like a film star, never show a fingerprint and cannot show heft. Approve proportion, layout and architecture from a render; judge colour only from the loose stone. Some organic designs skip CAD for hand-carved wax, an older fluency that suits flowing forms. Either way the design is produced in castable resin or wax — and if your maker offers a fitting of the resin ring, take it. It is the cheapest moment to change your mind that the process will ever offer you.

Fire

Now the foundry. In lost-wax casting, the resin ring is fixed by a sprue — a small stem — to a tree, the tree is set in a flask, and the flask is filled with investment, a plaster fine enough to take every detail. Overnight in a kiln the resin burns away, leaving a ring-shaped void, and molten 18ct gold or platinum is driven into it by centrifuge or vacuum. Quench, break away the plaster, and a rough grey ring emerges where the wax used to be. The hazard here is porosity — fine bubbles left by a rushed, cold or tired cast — invisible at handover and surfacing years later as pits in a polish. It is why casting queues deserve their days, and why some benches still build rings the oldest way, fabricating from rolled, work-hardened stock by hand: slower, denser, and quietly proud of it.

Assembly and the pre-polish

The sprue is cut, the surfaces filed and refined, and the parts — head, shank, gallery — are joined. Traditionally that meant solder; increasingly it means laser welding, a pinpoint heat that matters enormously for coloured-stone work, because it lets a bench build and repair close to heat-sensitive stones that a torch would endanger. Then the ring is polished nearly to finish while it is still empty. The ordering puzzles clients, but you cannot properly polish beneath a set stone; the pre-polish is the only chance that metal gets.

The setting hour

> Casting is chemistry. Setting is nerve.

Setting is the stage our own workshop treats with the most respect. A setter pushes metal over a girdle with controlled force, millimetres from the stone, and the margins are small: a slipped graver or a heavy thumb on a brittle species is not a mistake that buffs out. It is skilled, slow work and worth every dollar of its line on your invoice. The trade itself prices bench mastery without sentiment — at Sotheby's New York in June 2025, an 8.62 ct Colombian emerald ring by the Paris maker JAR more than doubled its high estimate at US$1.6 million (National Jeweler, 17 June 2025). Read that as respect for making, not as arithmetic for your ring; this series does not do investment cases. What you should take from it is a question for Chapter 8's list: who sets your stone, and who carries the risk while they do?

Finishing

After setting comes the final polish — applied sparingly, because every pass removes metal and crisp edges are one enthusiastic wheel away from mush — then rhodium if the ring is white gold, and the stamps. Australia has no compulsory hallmarking, so the fineness stamp — 750 for 18ct, PT950 for platinum — and the maker's mark are voluntary honesty, backed by consumer law; insist on both. Last comes the check that closes the loop. In our studio every stone is re-examined under the loupe after setting, because setting damage hides under claws and shows itself years later as a mystery chip. Whoever makes your ring, ask for that examination by name.

What Quality Takes: Timelines, Revisions and the Case Against Hurry

Six to ten weeks, honestly spent — where the time goes in a bespoke commission, and what every shortcut quietly costs.

An eight-week commission might contain thirty hours of hands-on labour. The other seven weeks are not padding; they are queues, kilns, couriers, revisions and approvals, and each of them is doing something for you. Understanding where the time goes is the difference between a client who waits well and a client who hurries the process and quietly pays for the hurry.

Where the weeks go

A realistic bespoke calendar runs like this. The consultation and brief take a sitting or two. Sourcing the stone takes one to four weeks for most briefs — and open-endedly longer for rare ones; an unheated padparadscha of a particular blush, or a matched pair, obeys no calendar. Design and revisions take one to two weeks, and two rounds of revision are normal, not a sign of trouble. The making — the casting queue, assembly and setting of Chapter 5 — takes two to three weeks. Finishing, quality control and delivery take another week. Call it six to ten weeks all told, plus a buffer for engraving or resizing. Two of those weeks belong to you rather than the maker: the daylight viewing of candidate stones, never rushed and never done by render, and the sit-with-it days before you approve the design. If the ring has a date to meet — a proposal, a wedding — work backwards three months and book the start, not the deadline.

Why sourcing wobbles

Sourcing is the least predictable line because it belongs to the world, not the workshop. The routes fine stones travel are re-drawn constantly: ahead of the Tucson shows in 2026, dealers from Sri Lanka, Thailand and Australia withdrew from the GJX show rather than face upfront tariff exposure on unsold consignment goods, with some rerouting business through Hong Kong (JCK, 14 January 2026). And at the source, fine material is genuinely scarce — premium ruby recovery at Gemfields' Montepuez mine ran at just 0.025 carats per tonne in the first half of 2026 (National Jeweler, 31 July 2026). Our own supply line is shorter than most for sapphire — the family tunnels of Echoes from the Mine and our Ceylon cutting house sit inside the fence — but no vertical integration can manufacture a stone that does not exist. When a maker tells you the right stone needs another fortnight, that is the market speaking, and the correct answer is thank you. Distance, at least, need not slow you: we courier stones for daylight viewing under free insured shipping Australia-wide, and our 30-day returns mean the audition carries no risk; any serious house offers an equivalent.

What hurry costs

> Hurry is the one ingredient that always shows in the finished ring.

Every compression has an address. Skip the resin fitting and the ring may need resizing after the fact — and resizing a finished coloured-stone ring is real workshop surgery, sometimes meaning the stone comes out before the shank is cut. Skip a revision round and the flaw you noticed in the render becomes the flaw you notice for thirty years. Jump the casting queue and Chapter 5's porosity is waiting. Rush the setter and the bill can be a chipped girdle. None of these show at handover; all of them show eventually.

While you wait, ask for photographs at the stage gates — the approved render, the raw casting, the pre-polish, the set stone. Not to supervise: the stage photographs become part of the ring's story, and a workshop happy to show its half-finished work is a workshop with nothing to hide.

Honest speed

Speed is not always a lie. A house holding its own stones, with a refined design language and a standing workshop, can honestly compress a commission into a few weeks — that is inventory and practice, not corner-cutting, and it is fair to ask a maker which of the two their fast timeline is made of. There is an honest middle path as well: a proven existing design adapted to your stone — semi-bespoke — which borrows tested architecture and spends the saved weeks on the stone itself. The trade does it constantly, and the only sin is calling it bespoke on the invoice. The one interval no workshop can compress for you is your own: the days between seeing the render and saying yes. Take them. Changing your mind in wax costs a courtesy; changing it in gold costs a remake.

The calendar test

Before you brief anyone, do the arithmetic in your diary: write down the date you need the ring, subtract twelve weeks, and see whether the start date has already passed. If it has, say so in the first consultation. An honest maker will tell you what is achievable and what would merely be sold to you as achievable, and the difference between those two sentences is most of what this chapter knows.

The Split: Budgeting the Stone and the Setting

Fifty to seventy per cent in the stone and the rest in the making — how to divide a budget so that neither the gem nor its guardian is starved.

Sooner or later every consultation arrives at the same sentence: "So how much of this should be the stone?" It is the right question asked the right way — as a split, not a number — because a bespoke budget is really two budgets wearing one ring: the money that buys the gem, and the money that builds its life support.

A working range, not a law

In our practice, the stone takes fifty to seventy per cent of an all-in coloured-stone commission, and the logic is replaceability. The setting, however lovely, can be rebuilt around the same stone in twenty years; the stone cannot be re-bought around the same setting, because a fine coloured stone is not a catalogue item — it is a one-off the market happened to surrender once. Below half, you are usually over-housing a modest gem; push much past three-quarters and the making begins to starve. As we say in consultations, "the setting is the stone's insurance policy" — and insurance is a poor place to economise.

There is a structural choice underneath the split: buying stone and setting from one house, or buying the stone loose and taking it to a separate bench. Both are legitimate. The one-house path gives you single accountability for the stone, the setting and everything between. The split path can save money and widen choice — but read Chapter 8's questions carefully before taking it, because when a stone arrives at a bench from elsewhere, the question of who carries the risk during setting stops being theoretical.

The setting has a floor

> Money in the stone is what you see; money in the setting is why you keep seeing it.

Making costs do not scale down with the stone. The hours to model, cast, assemble, set and finish a ring are roughly the same for a modest sapphire as for a magnificent one, so a properly made setting has a floor price — and when a budget squeezes below that floor, the squeeze leaves marks:

  • Claws drawn thin. Less metal today means retipping sooner and higher stakes at every knock.
  • A featherweight shank. Light-gauge bands bend, and a bent band works claws loose.
  • No basket under the stone. An unhoused pavilion is an exposed one, and it collects blows.
  • Rushed or outsourced setting. Chapter 5 said it: setting is nerve, and nerve is not the line to discount.

If two quotes for the same design differ sharply, ask which of those four is paying for the difference.

Making the stone money work

The Price of Colour maps the per-carat ladder at book length; here is the commissioning version. Convert every candidate stone to a per-carat price before comparing anything. Then use the honest levers. Treatment is the big one: fine untreated sapphires have roughly tripled in price since the pandemic, while over 90 per cent of sapphires on the market are treated (National Jeweler, 19 May 2025) — so a disclosed, heat-only sapphire is the workhorse budget path, and there is no shame in it, only in silence. Species substitution is the other: Gemworld's Stuart Robertson observed in January 2026 that ruby pricing has pushed many buyers towards garnet, spinel and red tourmaline (JCK, 14 January 2026) — red at a different money — and the same manoeuvre runs everywhere: a teal sapphire against a cornflower blue, a spinel against a pink sapphire. These are cost facts, not tips. Nothing in this chapter is an investment case, and the series' one financial rule stands: expect no return, and buy informed, for love.

Metal and the margins

Metal moves the total less than clients expect. With bullion prices where recent years have put them, the platinum-versus-18ct difference in a finished ring is mostly labour, and it should never be allowed to eat the stone budget. The quiet erosions are the extras — hidden halos, engraving, pavé shoulders — each modest on its own, together meaningful. Decide them after the stone is paid for, not before.

Creep runs the other way as well. It is easy, mid-commission, to stretch for the next stone up the ladder and quietly strip the making budget to fund it. Resist that too: Chapter 4's engineering is not decoration, and a magnificent stone in a starved setting is a magnificent stone at risk. Set the split early, write it down, and let it referee the later temptations.

Where never to save

Three lines that should survive every budget. Never put a lead-glass composite ruby in a working ring — Chapter 4 explained what routine bench work does to them, and their cheapness is the price of their fragility. Never accept an undisclosed anything; a discount built on silence is not a discount. And never shave the setter's fee, for the same reason you would not tender for the cheapest parachute packer. Spend where the stone shows and where the setting protects, and starve everything else first.

Ten questions for any maker, the paperwork a finished ring deserves — and the quiet duties of its first custodian.

Every good commission ends the same way: a small box across a table, and a folder of paper that matters more than the box. The ring is finished; the relationship is not. This closing chapter is about the ending done properly — how a sound house runs the journey, the ten questions that keep any maker honest, and the duties that come home with the ring.

How a good house runs it

Are the design and its measurements built around this exact stone, or around a calibrated ideal? 4. Which metal and fineness do you recommend for this stone, and why? 5. How does the setting protect this species' particular weaknesses? 6. Who will set the stone, and how experienced are they with this species? 7. Who carries the risk if the stone is damaged during setting? 8. What is the timeline, stage by stage, and where is the buffer? 9. What exactly will the invoice say about the stone, the metal and the maker? 10. What aftercare will the ring need, and who provides it?

A good maker will enjoy these questions. The enjoyment is the tell.

The paperwork

The invoice-in-plain-words rule closes every book in this series, and a bespoke ring earns the fullest version of it. The document should state the species; the carat weight and millimetre dimensions; the treatment status in full sentences, not codes; origin where a laboratory has determined it; the metal and its fineness; and the maker's name. Laboratory paperwork is improving at its half of the job — from 1 January 2026 GIA issues redesigned coloured-stone reports and has extended origin services to opal, peridot and demantoid garnet (National Jeweler) — and provenance language is being standardised too, with CIBJO's Supply Chain Nomenclature Committee building defined vocabulary for claims such as responsibly sourced and chain of custody (JNA, 7 November 2024). Until those definitions are common currency, plain sentences beat impressive labels. Photograph the ring, insure it at replacement value, and staple everything into one folder.

The life after

Aftercare is simpler than the trade makes it sound, provided it obeys Chapter 4's physics. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush clean every species safely. The ultrasonic tank is for unfilled, unoiled corundum only — never for emerald, opal or any composite stone. Bring the ring to a bench once a year for a claw check, the way you would service anything that works daily. Rhodium renewal on white gold is maintenance, not repair. Re-polish rarely, because metal removed never returns. Resizing may mean unsetting the stone, so take the ring back to a bench that knows it — ours, if we made it, under the free lifetime re-authentication that covers every stone we sell. The ring can always come home to be checked. Revisit the insurance valuation every few years as well; replacement costs move, and an old figure quietly under-insures the ring. Keep the stone's passport or report filed with the valuation, because an insurer replaces what is documented, not what is remembered.

Custodianship

> A ring's papers should read as clearly in fifty years as its stone shows in daylight.

A commissioned ring outlives its commission, usually by generations, and somewhere in its future is a person who will inherit it knowing nothing you know. The folder is for them. The engineering is for them. In that sense you are not the ring's owner so much as its first custodian, and the duties are light: wear it, check it yearly, keep its papers whole. Everything else this book had to say folds into the sentence the series always ends on. Commission in the right order, take the time that quality asks, put the money where it matters — and first, last and always, buy the stone you cannot stop looking at.
