Foreword: The Stone That Outlives You

Earlier this winter a woman came to see me in Sydney with a blue sapphire her father had bought in Colombo in 1968. The receipt, soft as tissue, was still folded into the lid of the box. The ring itself had been through three re-shanks; the claws were on their second full replacement; the velvet of the box had gone bald at the corners. And the stone — the only thing in that box nobody had ever needed to repair — was perfect. Under the microscope I found the 1960s still inside it: the fine silk undisturbed, the old polish still bright, a stone quietly waiting out the decades while everything around it wore away. She had come, she said, because her daughter was getting engaged, and the sapphire was about to begin its third pair of hands.

That inversion is the reason this handbook exists. Everything surrounding a gemstone is mortal — the mount, the box, the paperwork, eventually the owner. The stone, for any human purpose, is not. What varies is how much damage, confusion and lost history we allow to gather around it on our watch. Care, properly understood, is not polishing. It is custodianship — and it asks both less of you than the care industry implies and more than most owners actually give. Less, because no branded solutions or standing anxiety are required. More, because what is required is habit: a little sequence, a little paper, one honest appointment a year.

The evidence of longevity

The trade sees this most publicly at auction. When Christie's sold the Aga Khan emerald in Geneva on 13 November 2024 — US$8.8 million, a world auction record for the species (National Jeweler, 13 November 2024) — the headline was the number. The quieter fact was the career: a 37 ct stone that had already outlasted more owners, mounts and borders than most firms survive, arriving in the saleroom in fine order because each keeper along the way did a modest job well. Nothing about that is reserved for museum stones. The same physics protects the 0.92 ct sapphire in a first engagement ring, provided its keeper knows the short list of things that genuinely endanger it.

What this book covers

Chapter 2 explains how gems are actually damaged: why hardness and toughness are two different armours, where the built-in fault lines run, and why the mount usually fails before the stone. Chapter 3 is a species-by-species cleaning method, including the short forbidden list and the opal myths done properly. Every habit here works on a stone from anywhere — an auction room, a high-street jeweller, a grandmother's drawer — and the advice is written so you can apply it to jewellery from anyone, not only from us.

Breakage: How Gems Actually Get Damaged

Scratches are a hardness story and chips are a toughness story — and knowing the difference tells you which of your pieces will survive the decade.

Two different properties protect a gemstone, and they are not the same thing. Hardness is resistance to being scratched — the quality the Mohs scale ranks, with corundum at 9 and diamond above it. Toughness is resistance to being chipped or broken outright. A stone can hold one armour and lack the other entirely. Diamond is the hardest natural material known, yet it carries perfect cleavage and can be split by one well-placed knock; nephrite jade, the trade's usual example at the other extreme, is only modestly hard yet so tough — a felt of interlocking fibres — that it was carved into axe heads. Hardness governs how a stone ages across years of dust and drawers. Toughness governs whether it survives a single bad second.

The built-in fault lines

Cleavage is a plane of atomic weakness along which a crystal prefers to break, and some species carry it like a fault line. Topaz has a perfect cleavage; so does kunzite, which is also brittle enough that cutters dread it; tanzanite carries one direction of easy parting and resents both knocks and sudden temperature swings. Corundum — sapphire and ruby — has no true cleavage, which is a large part of why the species anchors this trade's daily-wear rings. Emerald's danger is different again: no dramatic cleavage, but a brittle nature and the near-universal presence of jardin, the internal fissures that make every hard knock a gamble. Opal has no cleavage either; its vulnerabilities are simple lowness of hardness, around 5.5 to 6.5, and, in some material, sensitivity to heat and desiccation. None of this is a reason to avoid a species. It is a reason to know which armour your stone is missing.

The third armour: stability

Gemmologists add a third property to hardness and toughness, and it completes the picture: stability, a stone's resistance to chemicals, light and heat. A pearl is not scratched by perfume; it is dissolved by it, fractionally, spray by spray. Kunzite is not chipped by sunlight; its colour simply walks away over long exposure. Opal is not knocked by a hot display cabinet; some material slowly dries toward crazing in one. Stability failures are the sneaking kind — no event, no sound, just a stone quietly worse each year — and they are the reason the daily-wear rules of Chapter 4 and the storage rules of Chapter 5 exist. When you assess any piece you own, ask all three questions: what scratches it, what breaks it, and what slowly ruins it.

Heat, shock and the quench lesson

Temperature change is a mechanical event inside a gem. A stone is a solid full of other solids and liquids — inclusions, fissures, fillers — and when the temperature moves fast, those components expand at different rates and pry at one another. Hot tap to cold rinse, a steam jet followed by cool air, a ring left on a dashboard demister: each is a small tug at every fissure the stone already has. The deliberate version of this teaches the lesson vividly. A GIA lab note published on 17 November 2025 documented a laboratory-grown sapphire that had been quench-crackled — heated and plunged to force a web of fractures — and then dyed through the cracks, the uniform fracture pattern being the giveaway under magnification. If a few seconds of thermal shock can shatter the inside of corundum, one of the most robust species we handle, gentler stones deserve gentler transitions.

The mount fails first

In our experience, most damage arrives through the setting rather than the stone. Claws wear paper-thin over years of sleeves and towels, then snag and lift. A stone that has gone slightly loose rattles in its seat and chips its own girdle against the very metal meant to protect it. Channel and tension settings lose their grip invisibly, with no bent claw to warn you. Thin girdle edges and exposed corners — the points of a princess cut, the ends of a marquise — chip on door frames and car doors. When a piece comes to us broken, the sequence is usually mount first, stone second: the failure began in metal months before it ended in mineral.

Reading a piece like a jeweller

You can catch most of this early without a bench. Hold the piece to your ear and tap it gently: a faint rattle is a loose stone. Loupe the claw tips in strong light: bright, flattened, mirror-worn tips are claws near the end of their life. Run a fingertip over the setting: anything that catches a cotton thread will catch a jumper, and then a stone. What you find goes to Chapter 6, where the professionals take over. The point of this chapter is simpler: gems almost never wear out. They are broken — at particular moments, through known weaknesses, most of which give warning first.

Cleaning: Safe Methods, Species by Species

Nearly everything you own is safe in warm soapy water and a soft brush — and nearly all cleaning damage happens on the short forbidden list beyond it.

Begin with the method that is safe for almost everything. A bowl — never the sink, which is how stones meet drains — of warm water with a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid. Let the piece soak for a few minutes, then work a soft toothbrush gently behind the stone, where hand cream and soap film collect against the pavilion and quietly switch the light off. Rinse in a second bowl of clean water, dry with a lint-free cloth, and stop. For solid, untreated stones — sapphire, ruby, spinel, chrysoberyl, garnet, tourmaline, quartz — this method used monthly will keep a piece bright for a lifetime. When you are unsure what a stone is or how it has been treated, this is the whole regime.

Two refinements before the species notes. First, dry completely before anything goes back into a pouch: trapped moisture tarnishes silver and sits against solder seams. Second, some constructions must never soak at all, regardless of the stone — closed-back and foiled-back settings hold water where it cannot escape, and pavé work can hide dozens of tiny seats that grip grit as happily as they release stones. Wipe those; do not bathe them. Plated finishes earn gentleness too: rhodium and gold plating are microns thick, and a stiff brush ages them years in minutes.

Sapphire and ruby: robust, with footnotes

Corundum tolerates warm water and detergent indefinitely, and this is where the ultrasonic question belongs. Ultrasonic cleaners are often described as safe for sapphire and ruby, and often they are — but there is no blanket rule, and we do not offer one. Machine-clean only a stone you know to be untreated or simply heated, free of any fracture-filling, and not carrying open fissures or large liquid inclusions; when the history is unknown, use the bowl. The hard exclusion is lead-glass composite ruby, which no machine, steam jet or acid should ever touch — household chemicals as mild as lemon juice etch its glass component, a story the Ruby volume of this series tells at length.

Emerald: clean around the oil

Almost every emerald carries oil or resin in its fissures, and cleaning an emerald is really the art of not disturbing it. Ultrasonic and steam can strip filler from the fissures or, worse, extend them. Solvents are the quieter enemy: acetone, alcohol-heavy products and citrus or eucalyptus oils all dissolve fillers, which is why an emerald ring should never soak in anything stronger than plain soapy water. The regime is a brief lukewarm wash, the softest brush you own, no soaking, and a gentle dry. An emerald that looks dull, whitish in its fissures or somehow "dry" does not need harder scrubbing; it needs professional re-oiling, which is Chapter 6's business.

Opal: the water myths, corrected

Two opposite myths circulate about opal: that it must be stored in water, and that it must never touch water. For solid Australian sedimentary opal — Lightning Ridge, Coober Pedy, the Queensland boulder fields — both are wrong. Stable Australian material neither needs wet storage nor is harmed by an occasional wash; what it actually dislikes is impact and prolonged baking heat. The true exception is Ethiopian hydrophane, which drinks liquids: water can temporarily flatten its play-of-colour, and soaps, oils and dyes can enter and stay. Hydrophane is wiped with a barely damp cloth, nothing more. Doublets and triplets — opal layered onto backing — must never soak at all, because water finds the glue line and clouds the piece permanently. If you are unsure which kind you own, treat it as the most fragile kind until identified; the classification language itself is being standardised in a CIBJO Opal Guide due to launch in September 2026, with defined treatment categories and disclosure requirements (Jeweller Magazine, 9 March 2026), and it is fair to ask any seller which category a stone belongs to.

The forbidden list

Some rules hold across every species. No bleach or chlorine near any jewellery, ever — the attack is on gold alloys and solder seams, not only stones. No ultrasonic and no steam for emerald, opal, pearl, tanzanite, kunzite, or anything fracture-filled, composite or unknown. No toothpaste, baking soda or "whitening hacks" — all are abrasive enough to scratch metal and softer stones. No boiling water and no sterilising. Organic gems — pearls and coral — receive a soft cloth, barely damp, after each wearing and nothing else; their real protection is the order of operations, which is the next chapter's subject.

Daily Wear: The Order of Operations

Jewellery goes on last and comes off first — and the rest of daily wear is knowing which rooms of your life a gem should never enter.

One of the best-kept rings we look after belongs to a client who has never used a specialist product on it in twenty years. What she has instead is sequence. Jewellery is the last thing she puts on in the morning and the first thing she takes off at the door of anywhere dangerous — and that habit, repeated daily, has done more for the piece than any cleaning regime could.

Last on, first off

Perfume, hairspray, sunscreen and moisturiser go on first and dry completely before jewellery is worn. The films they leave are why stones mysteriously go dim between cleanings — the answer to "why does my sapphire look dead" is usually sunscreen on the pavilion — and for pearls the stakes are higher, because the acids and alcohols in perfume etch nacre permanently. Pearls are the strictest case of the rule: last on, first off, wiped with a soft cloth before they go back in the pouch. The reverse applies at day's end: jewellery comes off before the cleanser, the shower and the gym bag, not after.

The rooms of the house

The kitchen is a percussion instrument: pans, benchtops and oven racks all sit at stone height, and dough and mince find every claw. Rings come off for real cooking. Cleaning is chemistry: chlorine bleach attacks gold alloys and solder seams, and repeated exposure can embrittle white golds at exactly the joints that hold stones — gloves on or rings off, with no third option. The same chemistry swims in pools and spas, with the added hazard that cold water shrinks fingers; more rings are lost to the ocean and the pool than to theft, in our experience. The garden combines grit — soil is an abrasive — with impact, and deserves the same respect. Occupational hands need their own honest audit: nurses, hairdressers, cleaners and chefs work all day in chemicals, heat and knocks, and for those hands a chain worn under the shirt honours a ring better than a finger does. Hand sanitiser, for completeness, is harmless to most solid stones in normal use — but it is an alcohol, so it stays away from pearls and from anything fracture-filled.

The dish and the pocket

Every removal needs a destination, because in our experience the moment a ring comes off is the moment it is most at risk — far more so than any hour it spends being worn. At home, one dish — a single, permanent, known location, not whichever windowsill was closest. Away from home, a zipped pocket or a small pouch kept for the purpose. What a ring never gets is the open trouser pocket, where it swims with keys and coins — metal on metal, plus whatever quartz-hard grit the day contributed — or the edge of a public basin, which is where insurance claims are born. The habit sounds trivial and is not: a piece with one home and one travel pouch survives decades of removals that would otherwise be a daily lottery.

Sport, sun and sleep

Gyms are where shanks bend: a loaded barbell can oval a ring in one set and crack even a tough stone against its own setting. Jewellery goes in a zipped pocket of the bag, or better, stays home in a dish. Sunlight is safe for the great majority of gems — sapphire and ruby are indifferent to it — but a few colours are light-sensitive, kunzite being the famous fader, and the fragile set should not spend summers on a windowsill or long days on a beach towel. Sleep is for skin: chains kink, claws catch bedding, and earring posts bend at 2 am. A dish on the nightstand ends the piece's working day.

The working ring

An engagement ring works a shift few other pieces are asked to: every day, both hands in everything, for decades. More of those rings now carry colour — JCK reported in June 2026 that coloured gemstones are surging in the bridal market, led by sapphire — which makes species choice part of care itself. Storage: Where Jewellery Sleeps

A diamond will scratch a sapphire and a sapphire will scratch nearly everything beneath it — and storage is simply the art of keeping your jewellery from meeting itself.

A jewellery drawer is not neutral territory. Left loose together, a collection is a slow-motion collision: every time the drawer opens, harder stones skate across softer ones, and the hardness ladder from Chapter 2 becomes a ranking of predators. Diamonds scratch corundum; corundum scratches emerald, spinel and garnet; almost everything scratches opal and pearl. The frosting on an old locket's glass and the dull patches on an heirloom amethyst are usually not age. They are neighbours.

One piece, one pouch

The rule costs almost nothing: one soft pouch or one lined compartment per piece, with no exceptions for "just the everyday things" — the everyday things need it most. Chains are clasped before they are put away and laid flat or hung, because a fine chain left loose becomes a knot with a personality. Earrings pair up on a card or in a divided tray so posts cannot score their neighbours. If you do this once, this week — every piece into its own pouch, ten minutes — you will have removed the single largest source of slow damage in most collections we see.

Climate

Where the drawer lives matters almost as much as what is in it. Sustained heat and dryness are the quiet enemies: a display cabinet under hot downlights, a sunny windowsill, and above all the parked car — an Australian summer turns a glovebox into an oven, and a ring left there through a January week has been through a slow kiln. Solid Australian opal is generally stable, but no opal enjoys being baked, and vulnerable material can craze under long heat and desiccation; emerald filler dries and turns whitish in the same conditions. Pearls want the opposite of a sealed box: nacre can dull after years in the very dry air of a bank safe, and occasional wearing — skin humidity included — genuinely suits them. Silver tarnishes in open air, so it sleeps in cloth bags or beside anti-tarnish strips. And antique pieces with foiled backs — Georgian and some Victorian stones sit on a mirror of metal foil — are ruined by a single damp incursion: dry storage always, and never washed, only wiped.

Travel

Jewellery travels in carry-on luggage, always, and never in a checked bag; no airline's compensation schedule approaches replacement cost, and Chapter 7's policies usually exclude checked valuables outright. A jewellery roll keeps pieces separated in transit; the hotel safe is for everything not being worn that day; and a photograph of what travelled, taken on the bed before departure, is the document an insurer will ask for if the trip goes wrong. Read the away-from-home clause before you fly, not after.

The long sleep

Some pieces are stored for years — an inheritance awaiting a decision, a ring between generations. The rule for the long sleep is documentation before the lid closes: photographs beside a ruler, a note of any reports and treatments, and copies kept somewhere other than beside the jewellery itself, so that the paper survives whatever the box does not. The choice of vault has honest trade-offs. A bank safe-deposit box is secure and, for most policies, favourably rated — but it is dry country for pearls, awkward to visit, and it hides condition, and a stone nobody looks at is a stone nobody notices deteriorating. A quality home safe keeps pieces close and inspectable, but check what your insurer requires of it — many policies specify the safe's grade, and whether it must be fixed to the building — before assuming cover. Wherever the long sleepers live, they deserve an annual daylight appointment, if only for ten minutes, on the same calendar this book keeps returning to; make it the day you also refresh the photographs, so the record ages with the collection instead of behind it.

Maintenance: The Bench Calendar

Claws wear out long before stones do — and a ten-minute annual check at the bench is cheap insurance against almost every loss we see.

Put one recurring date in the diary, and most of this chapter takes care of itself. An annual check at a jeweller's bench takes about ten minutes and costs little or nothing: the claw tips under the loupe, looking for the bright, flattened wear that means metal is nearly gone; a gentle rock-test of every stone for movement in its seat; the shank checked for thin spots and the beginnings of cracks at the solder seams; clasps and chain bails, where links wear thinnest, sprung and inspected. In our experience, most stone losses would have been caught at exactly this appointment, months before the claw finally let go. Book it this week for the pieces worn daily, and put it on an annual repeat.

Plating and polishing, with limits

Rhodium plating on white gold wears through in one to three years depending on the hands that wear it; re-plating is routine and harmless. Metal re-polishing is different, because polishing removes metal: hallmarks soften, engraving fades, and an old ring re-polished every year is being slowly erased. Polish sparingly, and on antique pieces, reluctantly. Stone re-polishing has a sharper caveat. Re-cutting a scuffed sapphire crown is legitimate work — but only once the stone's treatment is known. A titanium-diffused sapphire holds its colour in a skin so thin that re-polishing strips it away; beryllium diffusion, by contrast, penetrates deep enough to survive a re-polish, which is precisely why it must be declared before any wheel touches the stone. Treatment status is not a pricing detail here. It is a workshop safety instruction.

Re-oiling emeralds

Emerald filler is not permanent. Oils dry, weep and yellow over the years, and a once-lively emerald that has gone dull and whitish in its fissures usually needs re-oiling, not replacement — a routine service, closer to re-proofing a coat than to surgery. Two things should be in writing on the job sheet: what is going in (traditional cedarwood oil, or a modern resin, which is harder to reverse), and the fact that it was done at all, because the stone's laboratory report describes a specific clarity-enhancement state and undocumented refilling muddies the record a future custodian will rely on.

Heat is the enemy at the bench

The most dangerous room a gemstone ever enters is not the gym or the garden. It is the workshop. A jeweller's torch will craze a lead-glass composite ruby in seconds, boil the filler out of an emerald and crack an opal outright — which is why stones are lifted from their settings or properly heat-shielded before work, and why the jeweller must be told, in plain words, exactly what the stone is and how it is treated. Even robust sapphire has something to lose: GIA researchers reported in a study published on 17 November 2025 that heating corundum at temperatures as low as 850°C can intensify yellow tones and alters the 3161 cm⁻¹ infrared band that laboratories lean on as supporting evidence a sapphire is unheated. An undocumented trip through a careless repair can cost a no-heat stone the very evidence of its status. Anna's bench rule is shorter: "No stone meets the torch that has not met the loupe."

Choosing the bench

All of which makes the choice of workshop part of care itself, and a few questions sort the field quickly. Will stones be removed or properly heat-shielded before any torch work — asked as a matter of routine, not as a favour? Does the workshop have laser welding, which concentrates heat into a pinpoint and allows much repair work near stones that a torch could never safely approach — useful, though not a licence for carelessness? Is there a gemmologist available to identify a stone whose treatment is unknown, or a relationship with a laboratory that can? And will the job sheet record, in writing, what the stone is, how it is treated, and what is being done to it? A workshop that answers all four comfortably is the right room. One that waves the questions away has told you everything, politely.

The calendar, assembled

Annually: the ten-minute check, plus a proper clean by Chapter 3's rules. Every one to three years: rhodium for white gold, as it wears. Every two to three years: the valuation refresh that Chapter 7 explains. As needed, years apart: emerald re-oiling, sparing re-polish, re-tipping of worn claws. None of it is expensive, and all of it is cheaper than the phone call that begins with where a stone used to be.

Paper: Insurance and Valuations in Australia

A stale valuation quietly shrinks your cover every year the market moves — and in Australia the remedy is a document routine, not a product.

Somewhere in your filing cabinet is a number you have probably never read: the per-item limit for valuables on your home-and-contents policy. For most Australian policies it is modest — often a fraction of what a good sapphire ring replaces for — and it is the number that decides whether a loss is an inconvenience or a disaster. This chapter is not financial advice and does not recommend products. It is about knowing which regime each piece is under, and keeping the paperwork that makes any regime work.

What a contents policy actually does

Unspecified jewellery typically falls under a general valuables cap with that per-item limit. Above it, a piece must be specified — listed on the policy by description and value, usually against a current valuation. Beyond that again sit standalone jewellery policies, whose differences are worth reading closely: agreed value versus replacement; replacement with what, exactly — new, antique-equivalent, or cash settlement; who chooses the replacing jeweller; and whether cover follows the piece out of the house, overseas, and into transit. Whichever regime applies, the pattern is constant: the policy is only as good as the documents behind it. That truth surfaces at claim time, which is the wrong moment to discover it. A claim will ask for proof of ownership — invoice, photographs, valuation — a police event number if theft is involved, and evidence of what the piece actually was; an insurer cannot replace like with like if nobody can establish what "like" means. Under-insurance surfaces the same way: not as a warning letter, but as a settlement that buys back half a ring.

Why valuations go stale

A valuation is a snapshot of replacement cost, and replacement cost moves. US dealers told National Jeweler in May 2025 that fine untreated sapphires had roughly tripled in price since the pandemic, and Christie's, reviewing its 2025 year, reported demand for coloured stones surging while white diamonds merely stabilised (Rapaport News, 2 March 2026). None of that is a reason to buy gems — this series does not do investment talk, and rising prices help you not at all when you are the one replacing a lost ring. It is exactly why a valuation from five years ago quietly under-insures a coloured stone today. Because the trade prices per carat, a professional can re-anchor a valuation quickly against current schedules; the standard cadence is every two to three years, sooner after sharp market moves. In Australia, look for a registered valuer — the National Council of Jewellery Valuers is the professional body — and expect the document to record species, measurements, treatment status and any laboratory reports, not just a figure.

The document set

Four documents per significant piece, kept together and copied off-site: the invoice, with treatment status in plain words rather than stock codes; the laboratory report, if the stone merits one; the current valuation; and photographs beside a ruler. This is the file an insurer pays against, a valuer updates from, and an heir will one day be grateful for. It is also where a seller's systems either help you or do not. Ask these of your insurer and your valuer, and keep the answers with the documents.

1. Is each piece specified by description and value, or bundled under a general valuables limit? 2. Is the cover agreed value or replacement — and replacement with what: new, antique-equivalent, or cash? 3. For a coloured stone, does the policy fund a like-for-like replacement, and who chooses the supplying jeweller? 4. Am I covered away from home, overseas, and in transit — including carry-on travel? 5. What is the excess per item, and does one claim affect cover on the rest? 6. Does the insurer require a valuation, how recent must it be, and from whom? 7. Is my valuer registered and independent of the seller, and do they record treatments and reports? 8. Does the valuation state treatment status in plain words, not codes? 9. Are photographs and laboratory reports lodged with the policy, not only in my drawer? 10. When was the valuation last updated, and what is the diary date for the next one?

Heirlooms: Inheriting, Resetting and Honouring Old Stones

An inherited stone arrives with love and without paperwork — and honouring it means testing it, documenting it, and only then deciding whether to reset it.

The box usually arrives in a supermarket bag. A few times a month, in our experience, someone sits down in Sydney with an inherited collection: costume pieces and consequence mixed together, nothing labelled, no receipts, and grief attached to every item. The first thing we say is always the same. Nothing needs to be decided today. Heirlooms reward slowness, and the order of operations matters more here than anywhere else in this book.

Test before you decide

Identification comes first, because inheritance is where the surprises live. Synthetic ruby and sapphire have been abundant since the early 1900s — flame-fusion stones set in perfectly genuine period gold, sometimes sold honestly at the time, sometimes swapped somewhere along the line — and Victorian jewellery is full of garnet-topped doublets and foil-backed stones that were never what the family story says. None of this makes a piece worthless; all of it changes what care, cover and candour it needs. For anything significant, commission an independent laboratory report, and the timing is favourable: from 1 January 2026 GIA issues redesigned coloured-stone reports with richer visual documentation, and its origin service now extends to opal, peridot and demantoid garnet (National Jeweler, December 2025) — precisely the species that surface in Australian family boxes. Then apply the series' daylight discipline before any decision: live with the stone for a week and look at it each morning in ordinary daylight — a south-facing window here in Sydney, north-facing in the northern hemisphere — because you are deciding about a relationship, not just an object. The case for leaving it alone

Old cuts carry period character that no modern wheel can restore: an old mine cushion's candlelight geometry, an early Ceylon round's slightly soft symmetry, the weight a recut would shave away. An heirloom's small scratches are biography, not damage. And unassuming old rings sometimes hold stones of real consequence — at Sotheby's New York in June 2025, a ring holding a 7.50 ct Kashmir sapphire, exactly the kind of piece that sits unremarked in a drawer for decades, brought US$1.4 million against a US$500,000 to US$700,000 estimate (National Jeweler, 17 June 2025). The lesson is not the number. It is the order: identify first, and only then decide whether the mount or the moment needs changing.

Resetting with respect

Sometimes resetting is right: a mount worn beyond honest repair, metal fatigue at every joint, or a piece so far from the heir's life that it would otherwise never be worn — and a worn stone is honoured more than a stored one. Done respectfully, the sequence is: photograph the piece from every side before the stone is lifted; keep the old mount, or have its metal folded into the new casting; record dates, names and the reason for the change; and give the remade piece its own paper trail — a new invoice describing the old stone in plain words, treatments included, stapled to the old documents rather than replacing them. Dividing fairly

When a collection must be shared among several heirs, the same discipline keeps the peace. Have the whole collection valued by one independent, registered valuer before anything is distributed — independent meaning no interest in buying any of it — and divide by value, not by piece count, because one tested sapphire can outweigh a drawer of costume jewellery. Where two heirs want the same piece, the honest mechanisms are old ones: alternate choices in an agreed order, or one takes the piece and the other its valuation in offsetting value. What destroys families is not the jewellery; it is deciding first and testing later, so that somebody discovers years on that the "valuable" share was glass and the "sentimental" one was Kashmir. Test everything, value everything, then divide.

The one-page provenance

Finally, write the story down: who bought the piece, where and roughly when; who wore it and to what; what was changed, by whom, and why. One page is enough. Attach it to Chapter 7's document set and copy it to whoever comes next. A stone with its story intact is a different inheritance from the same stone without one — and the page costs an evening.

The sapphire from the foreword went back to its owner in September. The appointment took under an hour: claws checked and one re-tipped, the stone cleaned in a bowl by Chapter 3's method, the valuation re-anchored after too many years, and — at her kitchen table that evening, she told us later — the one-page story written at last: Colombo, 1968, her father's handwriting on the receipt, three re-shanks, and now her daughter's name. Every chapter of this book, one ordinary afternoon.

The page

The whole discipline fits on a page, and the page belongs with the jewellery.

  • Know the two armours. Hardness resists scratches; toughness resists knocks; learn which one each of your stones is missing.
  • One method cleans nearly everything. Warm water, mild soap, a soft brush, a bowl — and the discipline to stop there when a stone's history is unknown.
  • Last on, first off. Cosmetics dry before jewellery goes on; jewellery leaves before the gym, garden, pool and kitchen begin.
  • One pouch per piece. Jewellery stored loose is jewellery damaging itself.
  • Ten minutes at the bench each year. Claws, seats, shanks and clasps — and no torch near a stone whose treatment nobody has declared.
  • Paper ages faster than stones. Re-value every two to three years; keep invoice, report, valuation and photographs together, copied off-site.
  • Test heirlooms before deciding anything. Then reset with respect, or leave well alone, and write the one-page story either way.

The house's part

Our part in this is the standard we keep for our own stones. It was old when a river rolled it into a Ceylon gem gravel or a basalt flow carried it up through an Australian field; it spent that whole unimaginable interval being exactly what it is now; and it will be unchanged when the ring that holds it has been remade twice more and the names in this story have been forgotten. Against that timescale, a custodianship of forty or fifty years is brief — which is precisely why it matters that yours is a good one. You are not the stone's owner so much as its current custodian, and everything in these chapters — the bowls of soapy water, the pouches, the ten annual minutes, the page of provenance — is simply the small rent custodians pay.
