Foreword: The Certificate Is Not the Stone

Late last year a client emailed me two laboratory reports and asked which sapphire he should buy. He had seen neither stone. Both reports described a Ceylon sapphire of a little over 2 ct; both described the colour as blue; both recorded no indications of heating. On paper the stones were twins. When they reached my bench in Sydney a week later, they could hardly have been less alike. One was alive — an even, saturated blue that held from every angle and lifted in the afternoon light. The other was dark and closed, its colour drowned by an over-deep pavilion, with a grey cast that no field on the report had been designed to record. Both documents were entirely accurate. Neither had answered the question my client was actually asking.

That gap is the reason this handbook exists.

What paper can hold

A laboratory report is a genuinely remarkable document. For a modest fee, an institution with decades of accumulated science will tell you what a stone is — that it is corundum and not glass, spinel or a doublet. It will tell you whether that corundum grew in the earth over millions of years or in a factory crucible over weeks. It will tell you what has been done to the stone since it left the ground, which is where most of the money in the coloured-stone trade quietly changes hands. And it may offer an opinion, carefully labelled as such, about the country the stone came from. Those findings protect you from the worst outcomes a buyer can suffer, and no serious purchase should happen without them. The fee is trivial against the sums it protects, and nothing in this handbook should be read as a licence to skip the paper. The argument runs the other way: because the report matters so much, it deserves to be read properly — and reading it properly is a skill almost nobody teaches.

But notice what is missing from that list. A report cannot tell you whether a stone is beautiful. It cannot tell you how the stone behaves in daylight, whether the cut returns light or leaks it, or whether the price being asked bears any relation to what the stone truly is. A certificate is a floor under your purchase. It is never a ceiling.

What this book will teach you

The chapters that follow take the report apart the way I do at the bench. We begin with the laboratory landscape itself — who the major institutions are, how they earned their authority, and what their documents can and cannot say. We then read a report line by line, from the report number to the comments field where treatments are disclosed. We spend a full chapter on treatment language, because that is where most of a stone's price is decided, and another on origin opinions and their honest limits. We look at what to do when two laboratories disagree about the same stone, and how to verify that a report is genuine at all — a five-minute habit that defeats most paper fraud. Finally I will show you how we handle certification ourselves, and compress the whole book into ten questions you can carry to any counter in the world.

None of it requires a laboratory of your own. The instruments this book assumes are the ones our whole series assumes: a loupe, a jeweller's scale, a set of callipers, a window with honest daylight, and a patient frame of mind. Everything else is knowing what the words on the page were chosen to mean — and, just as important, what they were chosen not to say.

Our position, disclosed

We are participants in the market this book describes. Ministry of Gems® sells certificated stones; our family has worked the Ceylon gem fields for three generations, reaching back to the 1960s; and I assess every stone we list at my bench in Sydney before it is offered. You should weigh this book knowing that. But its purpose is not to steer you to us. It is to teach you to read a report from anyone — a Swiss laboratory, an auction house, a dealer in a Colombo arcade, or our own listings. If it makes you a harder customer everywhere, including here, it has done its work.

How to use it

Read the book once through before your next purchase, then keep it beside the paperwork it decodes. When the time comes, read the report slowly, verify it, and then put it down and look at the stone in daylight. The paper and the stone should tell the same story. When they do — and only when they do — buy the stone you cannot stop looking at.

The Lab Landscape: Who Speaks for a Stone

There is no world authority that licenses gemstones — only laboratories with reputations, and knowing how each earned its name is the first step in weighing its word.

No government stamps gemstones the way mints stamp coins. There is no global register, no compulsory standard, no gem police. Every laboratory report, from any house however storied, is a private scientific opinion — and it is worth exactly the reputation of the institution that signed it. That is not a flaw in the system; it is the system. So the first skill in reading certification is not reading the document at all. It is knowing who is speaking.

The institute and the journal

GIA — the Gemological Institute of America, founded in 1931 and run as a non-profit — sits at the centre of the field for a simple reason: research. Its quarterly journal Gems & Gemology, published since 1934, functions as the trade's peer-reviewed record. New treatments, new synthetics and new deposits generally surface in its pages before the counter ever hears of them, which is why several chapters of this book cite it. GIA is also where the paperwork itself is evolving: from 1 January 2026 the institute issues redesigned coloured-stone reports built around richer visual presentation of each stone (National Jeweler, December 2025), and it announced a new fee structure for coloured-stone services alongside the redesign (JCK, Rob Bates, 10 December 2025). One thing GIA deliberately does not do for coloured stones is grade quality. A diamond report carries letter grades; a sapphire report identifies, describes and discloses. The judgement of quality is left to you — which is rather the theme of this book.

The Swiss houses and the specialists

At the top of the corundum and emerald market sit the Swiss laboratories: Gübelin in Lucerne and SSEF, the Swiss Gemmological Institute, in Basel. Their reports travel with most of the important stones that pass through the Geneva salerooms. Around them work respected specialists — GRS, AGL in New York, Lotus Gemology in Bangkok — each with its own emphasis and house vocabulary. What matters for this book is the pattern: each house earned its standing by publishing its science, defending its calls, and surviving decades of stones that tried to fool it. Closer to home, the Gemmological Association of Australia trains and examines the FGAA qualification I hold. And below all of these spreads a long tail of regional and in-house letterheads whose seals outrun their instruments. Chapter seven deals with those.

What a report can say

Within its competence, a laboratory speaks with real authority. It can establish identity — species and variety. It can separate natural from laboratory-grown material. It can detect and name treatments, phrased carefully in the language of evidence — a distinction chapter four unpacks at length. It can measure the stone to a hundredth of a millimetre and weigh it to a hundredth of a carat. It may offer an origin opinion, and some houses will attach a trade colour term under a published in-house definition. Each of those findings rests on instruments, reference collections and published science.

What a report cannot say

No laboratory will tell you a stone is beautiful, that its cut is good, that its price is fair, or what it might be worth later. Nor is a report permanent truth: it is a snapshot of the evidence on the date of examination, and the science underneath it keeps moving. The trade knows this; CIBJO's Gemmological Commission has completed an extended edition of its Laboratories Blue Book, setting out management requirements, test protocols and accepted nomenclature for running a gem lab (CIBJO Gemmology Special Report, 2025). It is a genuine step towards common standards — but adoption is voluntary, and the hierarchy of trust remains what it has always been: earned, house by house.

Matching the lab to the purchase

The practical rule is proportion. A charming 0.70 ct stone does not need a Swiss report that costs a meaningful fraction of its price; a competent identification is enough. A five-figure unheated sapphire should not travel without a report from a laboratory whose name means something in that species — and at the top of the market, as we will see in a later chapter, one report is often not considered enough. Weigh the name before you weigh the stone.

Anatomy of a Report: Reading Every Line

Every line on a laboratory report is there for a reason — and the lines that guard your money are set in the smallest type.

Lay any coloured-stone report flat on a table and it divides into three territories: what the stone is, what has been done to it, and where it may have come from. Everything else — the seals, the photography, the heavy paper — is furniture. This chapter walks the document line by line, in the order your eye meets it, so that nothing on it is ever just decoration again.

The number and the date

The report number is the document's spine. It is the key you will later type into the laboratory's online register to confirm the paper is genuine, and it should appear on the invoice of any stone you buy. The date beside it matters twice over. First, detection science moves: a report issued before a treatment became detectable says nothing about that treatment, however sincere the laboratory was at the time. Second, stones have lives — they are recut, repaired, remounted — and a report describes the stone as it existed on one particular day. Weight and measurements

Weight is stated to two decimal places — 0.92 ct, never "about a carat" — and dimensions to a hundredth of a millimetre, such as 8.42 x 6.51 x 4.10 mm. These are the anti-substitution fields. A certificate proves only that a stone once matched it, so the discipline is to check that the stone in front of you still does: a jeweller's scale and a set of callipers settle the question in two minutes. Nearby sit the descriptive lines — shape and cutting style, recorded as plain fact. "Oval mixed cut" is an observation, not an endorsement; no laboratory is telling you the cut is good, only what it is. Whether that oval holds its colour or leaks it out of a window is a judgement the report leaves entirely to your eyes and ours. Species, variety and the unqualified name

One line on the report carries the entire natural-versus-synthetic question, and it does so almost invisibly. Under CIBJO-style nomenclature, an unqualified species name means a natural stone: "sapphire", alone, is an assertion that the earth made it. Laboratory-grown material must be qualified as such, prominently, every time. Read that line knowing the rule, and read it on invoices and listings too — the absence of a qualifier is a claim, not an oversight.

Colour, in words

Coloured-stone reports describe colour; they do not grade it. "Vivid blue" or "purplish red" is careful description, not a mark out of ten. Some laboratories will additionally append a trade colour term — royal blue, pigeon's blood — under a published house definition, and buyers should understand those as opinions under a private standard, not universal grades. Two labs can look at one stone and only one of them append the term; the stone has not changed. Once you know this, the words lose their hypnotic power, which is precisely the point.

The comments field

And so to the bottom of the page, where the type shrinks and the money lives. The comments field is where treatments are disclosed, where origin opinions are qualified, where the careful hedges sit. It is the least glamorous zone of the document and the only one I read twice. The next chapter is devoted to it entirely, because a buyer who can parse the comments field has learned most of what this book has to teach. One aside about the opposite end of the glamour scale: for important stones, some houses will sell an appendix letter or a bound monograph praising the gem at length, in prose worthy of a wine list. Enjoy the writing if it comes your way, but hold the hierarchy firm — the findings live in the standard fields, and the poetry is optional at extra cost. Here is a small exercise before you turn the page: this week, find any gemstone report you already own — yours, a relative's, anything — and read its comments field aloud, every word. If a single phrase in it is unclear to you, you have found exactly the gap this handbook is for.

The Language of Treatment: How Reports Say the Quiet Part

Treatments are legitimate when disclosed and ruinous when hidden — and the report's treatment line is where most of a stone's price is quietly decided.

Consider two phrases, a few words apart: "indications of heating" and "no indications of heating". Between them can sit a multiple of the price — often the difference between a lovely stone and a serious one. This series has said it in every volume and it bears saying again here: treatments are legitimate when disclosed; the sin is silence. The treatment line of a laboratory report is where disclosure either happens in full or fails, and reading it precisely is the heart of everything this book teaches.

Evidence, not certainty

Notice that laboratories do not write "unheated". They write "no indications of heating" — the language of evidence, chosen deliberately. The laboratory is telling you what its microscopes and spectrometers found, and found not, on the day of examination. That humility is earned. Research reported in Gems & Gemology's Fall 2025 issue showed that heating corundum at temperatures as low as 850°C can intensify yellow and orange colour while altering the 3161 cm⁻¹ infrared band that laboratories frequently rely on as supporting evidence a sapphire is unheated. When the science moves like that, the confidence behind old wording has to be re-examined — one more reason the date on a report is not fine print. Read in this spirit, the careful phrasing is not evasive but exact: the laboratory states what a thorough search found, and stakes its name on the thoroughness. Your job is to hold the words to their precise meaning and not one syllable further.

Why these words carry money

The premium attached to the no-heat line is not academic. US dealers report that fine untreated sapphires have roughly tripled in price since the pandemic, while more than 90% of the sapphires on the market are treated (National Jeweler, 19 May 2025). When the untreated minority is that small and that valued, the treatment line becomes among the most contested territory in the trade — and a standing magnet for wishful reading. Buy the stone for its beauty; but pay a no-heat premium only when a laboratory you trust has written those words about this stone.

Heat, and the diffusion line

Ordinary heat treatment is ancient, stable and accepted, and a report will disclose it plainly. Diffusion is a different word for a different thing. Beryllium diffusion drives colour-changing chemistry through the full depth of the stone — it penetrates deeply and cannot be polished away — and a report will say so in phrasing such as "indications of heating and beryllium diffusion". Titanium diffusion, the shallow-skinned cousin, is likewise named outright. Never let a seller round either down to "just heated": the price universes are different, and the laboratories separate them on purpose. The oil ladder and the composite red line

Emerald reports grade the extent of clarity enhancement — minor, moderate, significant — and name the filler, oil or resin, as our Emerald Buyer's Handbook explores. Read both halves: the amount tells you how much of what you see is filler, the substance tells you how the stone must be treated at the bench. Remember too that fillers are not forever — oils can dry, weep or be topped up between owners — so an emerald report grades the filler present on the day of examination. For emeralds above all, an old report is an old photograph of a face that ages. At the far end of the scale sits composite material: heavily fractured corundum infused with lead glass. Here the laboratories reach for their strongest language — some decline to call the result simply "ruby" at all, writing "composite ruby" or describing a manufactured product. On a report, that wording is not a nuance. It is a red line, and the price should fall accordingly.

Reading what is not there

Last, the silences. If a report carries no treatment line for a species that is routinely treated, do not assume untreated — assume unexamined, and ask. If a seller offers a stone "with certificate" but the certificate is mute on treatment, the certificate is answering a question nobody was worried about — identity, usually — while the expensive question goes quietly unasked. That trick relies on the phrase "with certificate" doing more work in your mind than the certificate does on its page. And whatever the report says, the series rule applies at the till: ask the seller to restate every treatment on the invoice in plain words. An honest seller writes the sentence without flinching. Watch the flinch.

Origin Opinions: The Word the Labs Chose Carefully

A single geographic word can multiply a stone's price — which is exactly why every serious laboratory calls its origin finding an opinion, not a fact.

"Where is it from?" is usually the second question a client asks me, straight after "is it real?". The trade has built an enormous architecture of price on the answer — Kashmir, Burma, Ceylon, Colombia, Paraíba are not just places but incantations — and yet the laboratories that supply the answer are strikingly modest about it. Every serious report labels origin an opinion. This chapter is about why that word was chosen, and how to spend money wisely in its shadow.

Why origin pays

The premium is real and can be startling. At Christie's Magnificent Jewels in New York in June 2026, a ring set with a 15.49 ct Kashmir sapphire sailed past its $1.2–1.8 million estimate to sell for $2.1 million (National Jeweler, June 2026) — a figure inseparable from the word Kashmir on its paperwork. A year earlier in the same city, a ring holding a step-cut 7.50 ct Kashmir sapphire brought $1.4 million at Sotheby's against a $500,000–700,000 estimate (National Jeweler, 17 June 2025). Age, cut and mounting varied; the word did the lifting both times. The Price of Colour counts origin among its five premiums and explains the economics; our concern here is upstream of the economics. Before you pay for a word, understand how the word got onto the page.

How the call is made

Origin work is genuine science. Laboratories read a stone's inclusion suite and growth features under the microscope, measure its trace-element chemistry, and run its spectra, then compare all of it against reference collections of stones whose provenance is known. The methods keep sharpening: GIA research published in 2025 correlates peak positions in corundum's 3309 cm⁻¹ infrared series with trace-element concentrations, helping to separate metamorphic from basalt-related blue sapphire, and both from laboratory-grown material (Gems & Gemology, Spring 2025). But notice what the method fundamentally is: pattern-matching against nature. And nature repeats herself.

The honest limits

Geologically similar deposits produce similar stones — a fine Ceylon sapphire and a fine Madagascan one can be close cousins under every instrument. New sources keep arriving to complicate the reference books: Gems & Gemology's Winter 2025 issue characterises the French Bar sill, a primary hard-rock sapphire occurrence on Montana's Missouri River, comparing its inclusions and trace-element chemistry with the state's long-known secondary deposits. Every such discovery obliges every laboratory's reference collection to grow, or its opinions quietly age. This is why labs will sometimes return "inconclusive", and why two excellent laboratories can differ on the same stone — the subject of the next chapter. Understand what an inconclusive result is: a laboratory that says it cannot tell has not failed you. It has refused to guess with your money, which is the opposite of failure. The word opinion is not a disclaimer lawyers added. It is an accurate description of the finding, offered by the only people with no stake in what you pay.

The roster is growing

Origin language is also spreading to species that never carried it. For years GIA's origin service covered alexandrite, emerald, Paraíba tourmaline, red spinel, ruby and sapphire, along with certain untreated jades; from 1 January 2026 it extends to opal, peridot and demantoid garnet (National Jeweler, December 2025). Expect origin lines — and origin premiums, and origin disputes — to follow into those markets. The reading skills in this chapter will travel with them.

When origin should not decide

Here is the discipline we apply at our own bench, and the one I commend to you anywhere. Pay for beauty first. A dull stone from a famous valley is a dull stone; no opinion on a page will make it lovelier on your hand. An origin premium is worth considering only when the stone would already tempt you with the origin line covered by your thumb — and, at serious prices, only when more than one respected laboratory has reached the same opinion independently. Origin is the one field on the report that can double the bill without changing the stone. Treat it with exactly that much respect, and no more.

When Reports Disagree: Two Labs, One Stone

Two honest laboratories can examine the same stone and reach different conclusions — and what you do next is the real test of an educated buyer.

In November 2024, a 17.97 ct unheated Burmese ruby sold at Phillips in Geneva for $5.4 million, just shy of its high estimate. It travelled with reports from both SSEF and Gübelin (National Jeweler, 13 November 2024). Pause on that detail. At the very top of the market — where the buyers command any expertise money can hire — one laboratory's word is routinely not considered enough. The two-report habit exists because the people with the most at stake understand something casual buyers do not: honest laboratories can disagree.

Where the fault lines run

Disagreements cluster at boundaries. The line between ruby and pink sapphire is a colour judgement, as our Ruby Buyer's Handbook records, and two houses can draw it a shade apart. The line between unheated and gently heated sits at the detection margin, and the previous chapter's 3161 cm⁻¹ story shows that margin moving under the trade's feet. Origin opinions can split between geologically similar deposits. Trade colour terms — padparadscha boundaries famously — are house definitions, so divergence is built in. Different reference collections, different instruments, different internal thresholds: the surprise is not that laboratories occasionally differ, but that they agree as often as they do. It is also why resubmitting a stone is a recognised, if quiet, part of the trade — dealers know that a borderline stone examined twice can come home with two different sentences, and the price follows the kinder one to market. You now know it too, which changes how you read a lone report on a borderline claim.

Why disagreement is not scandal

A split verdict usually tells you something true: the stone is genuinely borderline. And borderline is information you can spend. The premium being asked — for no-heat, for origin, for a colour term — attaches precisely to the contested word. If the stone were unambiguous, both laboratories would have said so. When they have not, the market's grand certainty about the price deserves your polite doubt.

The buyer's protocol

Our protocol at the bench is simple, and it transfers to any purchase anywhere.

  • If the disagreement is about identity — natural versus laboratory-grown, or the species itself — walk away. Something binary is in dispute, someone is wrong, and you are not equipped to referee. There will be other stones.
  • If the disagreement is about treatment, price the stone from the stricter report. If the seller insists on pricing from the kinder one, the gap between the two prices is your answer about the seller.
  • If the disagreement is about origin, treat the premium as unearned and pay for the stone's beauty alone. If it is only worth the asking price with the disputed word attached, it is not worth the asking price.

Dates and re-issues

Remember, too, that a laboratory can disagree with itself. Instruments improve, reference collections grow, and a stone resubmitted after some years may return with different wording — which is a system working, not failing. A newer report from the same laboratory supersedes an older one — so when a seller shows you two documents, ask plainly which is current, and why the other is still in the folder. When a stone comes with vintage paperwork and a striking claim, the question to ask is gentle and devastating: would this laboratory write the same sentence today? If the seller is confident it would, the renewal that proves it costs a fraction of the premium being asked, and an honest seller knows exactly whose interest that renewal serves.

Two reports as discipline

For a significant purchase, commissioning a second report is not paranoia; it is proportion. The cost is small against the premium riding on the contested words, and the outcome is valuable either way. If the second laboratory agrees, you have bought certainty cheaply. If it disagrees, you have bought the truth about what you were actually being offered — which is the better bargain of the two. Either way you sleep, and this series is firmly in favour of sleep.

Paper Fraud: Verifying the Report Itself

A counterfeit gemstone takes skill; a counterfeit certificate takes a printer — verifying the paper is a five-minute habit that protects everything else.

Everything this book has taught so far assumes one thing: that the report in your hand is real. It is an assumption fraud is delighted to meet. Faking a convincing gemstone requires equipment and knowledge; faking a convincing document requires a template and nerve. So the confidence a certificate creates is itself the target — and the defence, fortunately, is cheap, fast and available to everyone.

The four frauds

Paper fraud arrives in four flavours. There is the wholly invented report, issued in the name of a laboratory that does not exist or exists only to sell certificates. There is the genuine report married to a different stone — the swap — exploiting the fact that paper and gem travel separately. There is the doctored genuine report — a PDF with the weight nudged, a treatment sentence quietly deleted, an origin upgraded by two keystrokes. And there is the technically real report from a laboratory whose standards mean nothing: a lab that certifies everything certifies nothing, whatever its seals suggest, and entire online marketplaces float on exactly this kind of paper. Each fraud defeats a different kind of carelessness — the first defeats trust in letterheads, the second defeats trust in matching, the third defeats trust in files, the fourth defeats trust itself — which is why the checks below are layered rather than optional.

Check the number

Every major laboratory now runs an online verification service. Type the report number into the issuing laboratory's own register and it returns the stone's recorded details — weight, dimensions, species, treatment status, often an image. The whole exercise takes under a minute, it is free, and it instantly defeats the invented report and most doctored ones: the register shows what the laboratory actually wrote. One caution — a QR code printed on a certificate is only as trustworthy as the destination it points to, and forgers print QR codes too. Find the laboratory's register yourself rather than trusting the paper to lead you there. Here is the second exercise of this book: this week, run any report you own through the issuing laboratory's online check, end to end, so the habit exists before money is on the table.

Check the stone against the paper

The register defeats fake paper; only you can defeat the swap. A certificate proves that a stone once matched it, so confirm this stone still does: weight to 0.01 ct on a jeweller's scale, dimensions to 0.1 mm with callipers, and the report's photograph or plotted inclusions compared against what the loupe shows you. Where a laboratory has inscribed the report number on the girdle, ask to see it under magnification. In a shop, ask for the stone to be weighed in front of you; a seller who hesitates over a thirty-second courtesy has told you something worth more than the certificate. None of this requires a gemmology diploma — it requires ten minutes and the willingness to look.

The stone built to fool the reader

Fraud also flows the other way: material engineered so that casual examination confirms the paperwork. GIA's Fall 2025 lab notes document a laboratory-grown sapphire that had been quench-crackled and dyed — a synthetic dressed in the fracture patterns of a treated natural stone, betrayed under magnification by the suspicious uniformity of its web-like cracks. Paired with confident paperwork from an obliging letterhead, such material is designed to pass a hurried reading. The defence is the one this chapter keeps returning to: the laboratory's name carries the weight, not the paper's thickness, and names can be checked.

Daylight, always

The final check is the one no forger can print. Take the stone to a south-facing window here in Sydney — north-facing in the northern hemisphere — and let it behave. A stone whose report promises vivid, unheated colour should look like the promise. If the paper says one thing and the daylight says another, believe the daylight and reopen every other question. In this trade, the documents exist to serve the stone. The moment they disagree, you have learned which one someone wanted you to read first.

The House Method: How a Stone Earns Its Paper Here

Certification as we practise it — every stone assessed at the bench in Sydney, independent reports on request, and a record that lives as long as the stone does.

When a parcel arrives from our cutting house in Ceylon, it does not go to the photographer. It comes to my bench. This chapter sets out how certification works at Ministry of Gems — partly so you know what stands behind our own listings, and mostly because it is a working model of everything this book has argued. Hold any seller, including us, to the standards below, and the previous seven chapters become armour you wear everywhere.

The bench assessment

Every stone we list is assessed in-house before it is offered: identity confirmed with the standard bench instruments — refractometer, spectroscope, microscope — treatment status established, weight and dimensions recorded, and the stone judged in Sydney daylight, the same window discipline this series teaches you. On the rare occasion something at the bench remains ambiguous, the stone goes out to an independent laboratory before it is listed, not after a buyer asks awkward questions. My qualification is the FGAA, trained and examined by the Gemmological Association of Australia, and nothing is listed that I have not personally examined. The findings are written into the listing and restated on the invoice in plain words — the invoice rule of this series, applied first to ourselves. If a stone is heated, the listing says heated. There is no small print because there is nothing to put in it.

Independent reports, on request

We do not force the cost of a Swiss report onto a modest stone; as chapter two argued, certification should be proportionate to the purchase. But for significant stones — and for any stone, at any buyer's request — we arrange an independent report from a recognised laboratory, and the buyer chooses the laboratory. If you would rather trust Basel or Lucerne or Carlsbad than Sydney, good. That instinct is this book working as intended, and no honest seller anywhere should resist it. The test of a seller is not whether they have paperwork; it is how they behave when you ask for more.

The Digital Gemstone Passport

Each stone we sell carries a Digital Gemstone Passport: its identity, measurements, treatment disclosure, origin, and imagery held in one standing record that follows the stone through its life. Attached to it is free lifetime re-authentication — bring the stone back in five years or twenty five, for a resale, an insurance renewal or an inheritance, and we verify it against its own record without charge. The wider industry is moving the same direction in vocabulary: CIBJO's Supply Chain Nomenclature Committee is building standardised definitions for claims such as responsibly sourced, traceability and chain of custody (JNA, 7 November 2024). We think the strongest answer we can give to that conversation is not better adjectives but a standing record per stone, renewed for life.

A report tells you what a stone is; it cannot tell you where it has been. Our answer is vertical: our own Ceylon mines, our own cutting house, and the bench in Sydney — one chain, one family, three generations. Every volume in this series ends the same way: with the discipline, not a sale. The most common mistake in certificated buying is paying for the paper instead of the stone — treating the report as the product and the gem as its accessory. The cure is to make the paper answer questions rather than radiate confidence. Here are the ten this book has armed you to ask, anywhere in the world, of anyone.

1. Is there a report at all — and from which laboratory? Weigh the name before the stone. A laboratory you have never heard of is a research task, not a reassurance. 2. Does the stone in front of me match the paper? Weight to 0.01 ct, dimensions to 0.1 mm, photograph and inclusions against the loupe. A certificate proves only that a stone once matched it. 3. Have I verified the report number in the laboratory's own online register? Under a minute, free, and it defeats most paper fraud outright. 4. What exactly does the treatment line say — and what is missing from it? Evidence language, read precisely. A missing treatment line means unexamined, not untreated. 5. Is the species name qualified or unqualified? Unqualified means natural under CIBJO-style nomenclature; laboratory-grown must say so prominently, on the report and the invoice alike. 6. How old is the report? Detection science moves and stones have lives. An old report on a stone carrying a bold claim deserves renewal before serious money moves. 7. Am I paying an origin premium — and would I want this stone with the origin line covered by my thumb? If the answer is no, the premium is the purchase, and that is the wrong purchase. 8. If there are two reports, do they agree — and if not, am I pricing from the stricter one? Identity disputes mean walk away; treatment disputes mean the stricter report sets the price. 9. Will the seller restate every treatment on the invoice in plain words? One sentence, written without flinching. Watch the flinch. 10. Have I looked at the stone in daylight, away from the paper? The window is the one instrument every buyer owns. If daylight and document disagree, believe the daylight.

The life after paper

A report's work does not end at the till. File it with your insurance documents and keep a digital copy; photograph the stone beside it; record the purchase in plain terms while the details are fresh. Insurers will generally ask for the report and a current valuation at claim time, and the difference between a documented stone and an undocumented one, on that bleak day, is the difference between a settlement and an argument. Have valuations updated on a sensible cycle, and re-certify at the stone's turning points — after a recut or a significant repair, before a sale or a formal valuation, or when the science has visibly moved, as this book's low-temperature-heating story showed it can. The paper trail is not bureaucracy. It is the stone's biography, and you are its current author.

Custodianship

A certificated stone will outlive its paperwork, its setting, and — said gently — its buyer. You are not its owner so much as its current custodian, and the file you keep is what custodianship looks like in practice: reports, invoices, valuations, the passport if it has one, each generation adding its page. A loose stone with a folder of honest documents passes to the next hand as an heirloom with a biography. The same stone without them arrives as a stranger, and starts again from "is it real?".
