Chapter I

Foreword: The Great Impostor

Anna, our FGAA-qualified gemmologist, on the stone that spent six centuries impersonating ruby at the front of the British Crown Jewels — and why the unmasking turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to buyers.

A confession from the bench

Let me open with a confession that would have got me laughed out of a jewellery salon a generation ago: the stone I reach for most often when a client asks me for "a red like a ruby, but honest about the price" is not a ruby at all. It is a spinel. And I am in excellent company. The most famous red gem on Earth — the one that sits at the very front of the British Imperial State Crown, directly above the Cullinan II diamond, the one every schoolchild is told is the Black Prince's Ruby — is a spinel of roughly 170 carats, and has been quietly impersonating a ruby since the fourteenth century. Nobody involved was lying. For most of recorded history, nobody could tell the difference.

That double life is the key to everything in this handbook. Spinel is the gem the trade calls the great impostor, and I want to persuade you, over the next eight chapters, that the impostor label is the most backhanded compliment in gemmology. A stone does not get mistaken for ruby — by kings, by conquerors, by the people whose job it was to know — unless it is doing everything a ruby does. The red is chromium red, the same colouring agent. The fire is real. The history is, if anything, grander. What spinel lacked for six hundred years was a name of its own, and what it has lacked for the last hundred is a marketing department.

Why this volume, and why now

This is a working handbook, not a love letter — although, fair warning, some love will leak in. My aim is the same as in every volume of our free Buyer's Library: to hand you, before you spend a dollar, the same information I use at the bench. You will get the history, because with spinel the history is the sales pitch and you should know which parts are documented and which parts are lore. You will get the colour science, because spinel covers more of the colour wheel without treatment than almost anything else I test. You will get a candid treatment chapter, because "spinel is never treated" — a line you will read on a dozen dealer sites — stopped being true in 2015, and the exceptions now matter enormously for blue stones. You will get the synthetic story, because factory-made spinel has been circulating since the 1920s and a remarkable share of the "vintage birthstone" rings I examine contain it. And you will get real numbers with named sources — Bonhams, Christie's, GemGuide, Rapaport — because a market this thinly documented is exactly where a buyer most needs an anchor.

Why now? Because spinel's century of obscurity is visibly ending. In 2016 it was added to the official modern birthstone list for August — only the third amendment to that list since 1912. In 2015 a single spinel made about US$30,000 a carat at auction. In 2024 a pair of spinel earrings tripled their estimate at Christie's New York. The word is out, and when the word gets out about a gemstone, two things happen at once: prices firm, and nonsense multiplies. This handbook is my attempt to get to you before the nonsense does.

Chapter II

Six Centuries of Mistaken Identity

The Black Prince's Ruby, the Timur Ruby, the Samarian Spinel — the grandest 'rubies' in royal history are spinels, and the paper trail of the confusion runs from Marco Polo to a French mineralogist in 1783.

The ruby that never was

Start with the most famous case file in gemmology. The Black Prince's Ruby is an irregular polished cabochon of red spinel, around 170 carats, mounted in the cross pattée at the front of the United Kingdom's Imperial State Crown, directly above the Cullinan II diamond. It is, by common account, one of the oldest gems in the Crown Jewels. Its documented story begins in fourteenth-century Spain, where it passed through Moorish and then Castilian royal hands before being given, in 1367, to Edward of Woodstock — the Black Prince — as payment for military support at the Battle of Nájera. By tradition, Henry V wore it in his battle helmet at Agincourt in 1415; I give you that one as tradition rather than verified fact, because it rests on chronicle and retelling, but it has been repeated for six centuries and the stone has certainly survived worse. When Queen Victoria was crowned in 1838, the new Imperial State Crown made for her by Rundell & Bridge contained 3,093 gems — and the old red spinel kept its place of honour at the front. Through all of this, everyone called it a ruby.

It was not even the biggest impostor in the family. The Timur Ruby — 352.5 carats of polished red spinel, named for the conqueror whose armies sacked Delhi in 1398 — was regarded for centuries as the largest ruby in the world. It was finally identified as spinel in 1851, which happens to be the very year the East India Company presented it to Queen Victoria. One imagines a slightly awkward pause at the handover. Larger still is the Samarian Spinel in Iran's Treasury of National Jewels in Tehran: at roughly 500 carats it is the largest known spinel anywhere, carried to Iran by Nader Shah after his eighteenth-century invasion of India, and still bearing a drilled hole from an earlier life as a pendant. And in May 2011, Christie's Geneva sold an Imperial Mughal necklace of eleven polished baroque spinels totalling 1,136.63 carats — several of them engraved with the names of the emperors Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb — for US$5,214,348, roughly twice the top estimate. Per Lotus Gemology's auction records, that remains the highest total price ever paid for spinel jewellery. The Mughal emperors, please note, inscribed their names on spinels. They knew exactly what mattered.

Balas rubies and the red mountain

Where did all these stones come from? Overwhelmingly, one place: the Kuh-i-Lal mines — the name means "red mountain" — in Badakhshan, on today's border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. These workings have been producing pinkish-red spinel since roughly the eighth to tenth century, per GIA's historical reading list, and SSEF credits the deposit with more than a thousand years of production. Marco Polo, writing in the thirteenth century, described the mines and noted that the local king monopolised the supply — perhaps history's first recorded example of controlled gemstone marketing. The trade name for this material was "balas ruby," from Balascia and Balkh, old names for the Badakhshan region, and the Black Prince's Ruby itself is believed to be Kuh-i-Lal material. So when you read a medieval inventory listing "a great balas," you are almost certainly reading about a spinel — catalogued, priced and treasured under another gem's name.

A note on how to hold these stories, because spinel is sold on them daily. The 1367 payment at Nájera is documented; the Agincourt helmet is chronicle and tradition, retold for six centuries because it is irresistible. Both kinds of story raise prices, and only one kind should. When you are offered a stone with a tale attached — a maharaja, a shipwreck, a duchess — apply the crown-jewel standard: paper or lore? The Crown Jewels have inventories; your seller should have documents. Provenance that survives scrutiny is a legitimate and sometimes spectacular component of value, which is why this library gives it a whole volume. Provenance that evaporates under two polite questions is atmosphere, and atmosphere is free. The Black Prince's Ruby teaches both halves of the lesson at once: a genuinely documented six-hundred-year biography — and, riding on top of it, an Agincourt legend nobody can verify. 1783: the year the mask came off

The unmasking, when it finally came, was French and precise. In 1783 the mineralogist Jean-Baptiste Louis Romé de l'Isle demonstrated, on the basis of crystal form, that spinel and ruby are different species — the American Gem Society keeps the citation. Ruby is aluminium oxide; spinel is magnesium aluminium oxide, crystallising in the cubic system, typically as sharp little octahedra. Even the name records the shape: "spinel" most likely derives from the Latin spina, thorn, for those sharp octahedral points, though a rival derivation from the Greek spinther, spark, refuses to die — and honestly, either would suit it. The practical consequence of the chemistry is the one I use at the bench every week: spinel is singly refractive where ruby is doubly refractive, a distinction invisible to the eye but unmistakable through the right instrument, which is precisely why centuries of owners were fooled right up until instruments arrived. What the impostor teaches a buyer

I linger on the history because it teaches the two lessons this whole handbook rests on. First: spinel's beauty needs no apology and never did. It held the front of a crown on merit, for centuries, against the finest rubies on Earth. Second, and less romantic: names are assigned by instruments, not by sellers, and a stone's identity is a laboratory question. The fourteenth century had an excuse. You, with the modern gem lab a courier away, do not. Everything else in this book — the treatment chapter, the synthetic chapter, the paperwork chapter — is really just this lesson with the details filled in.

Chapter III

Colour: The Whole Wheel

Chromium reds, neon Mahenge pinks, cobalt blues and the quiet ascent of grey — spinel covers more of the colour wheel without treatment than almost any other gem, and the chemistry explains every shade.

The chemistry of a whole colour wheel

Spinel's colour story is chemistry you can hold in one hand. The mineral itself — magnesium aluminium oxide, MgAl2O4 — is colourless when pure. Everything you fall in love with is a trace element. Chromium paints the reds and pinks, exactly as it does in ruby. Iron delivers the steely blues, the violets and the greys. And cobalt — rare, and lately controversial, as Chapter V will explain — produces the electric "cobalt blue" that has collectors abandoning sapphire counters. That three-element palette is set out in the LMHC's 2025 information sheet on cobalt spinel and in every serious reference since. Physically, the stone is a gift to jewellers: cubic and singly refractive, refractive index around 1.718, specific gravity about 3.60, hardness 8 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage and good toughness. The International Gem Society and the Gemopedia both class it as fully suitable for rings and daily wear, and I agree from long experience.

Clarity-wise, spinel is a Type II gem — some inclusions expected, eye-clean stones very findable — and its inclusion suite is one of the prettiest in gemmology: tiny octahedral negative crystals like suspended dice, mineral guests including spinel crystals inside spinel, fingerprint veils, occasional iron staining. GIA's photomicrography guides catalogue them lovingly, and so do I, because those little octahedra are friends: they are one of the quickest signs that a stone grew in the earth rather than in a furnace.

Red, and the Jedi glow

Red is the throne. Top red spinel is chromium-rich, open in tone, and carries a fluorescent warmth that reads as an inner glow in daylight. The extreme case is the so-called Jedi spinel of Man Sin, in Myanmar's Mogok valley: neon pinkish-red stones so vivid that the field gemmologist Vincent Pardieu, writing in GIA's Gems & Gemology in 2014, described them as gems "untouched by the dark side" — no dark tone, no dead window in the middle. The nickname stuck, as good nicknames do. Later spectroscopy, including a 2022 study in Minerals, tied the glow to an unusually high chromium-to-iron ratio and strong red fluorescence: chromium supplies the light, and the near-absence of iron declines to switch it off. Be aware that "Jedi" is a trade nickname with no laboratory definition, and it is now applied to stones its inventor would wince at. Buy the glow, not the word.

Since colour is the whole price in spinel, let me give you the bench habit that serves buyers best. Judge three things separately, in daylight: hue (the colour's name), tone (how light or dark it sits) and saturation (how much life is in it). Spinel's characteristic failure mode is tone — plenty of stones carry glorious hue at a darkness that swallows it indoors, and a stone that only performs under a halogen spotlight is a stone you will wear mostly indoors, disappointed. The characteristic triumph, at the top of the market, is fluorescence: chromium-rich reds and pinks return a little of the sun as red light, which is the physics beneath that 'lit from within' phrase every dealer reaches for. So move the stone: window light, shade, a step back from the counter. A fine spinel stays alive through all of it. And remember that the impostor's oldest trick works in your favour here — spinel's red is ruby's red, chromium's red, judged by exactly the same eye you would bring to a stone at ten times the price.

Pink: the Mahenge phenomenon

In August 2007, miners at the Ipanko workings near Mahenge, Tanzania, broke into a pocket holding four enormous spinel crystals — about 54 kilograms of rough in total, as JCK tells the story — and the coloured-stone world has not been the same since. The material was a hot, neon pink shading to pinkish red, in sizes and quantities nobody had seen before, and it minted the modern market for pink spinel. "Mahenge" is now shorthand for that neon pink the way "Kashmir" is shorthand for velvet blue. Rapaport's 2025 gem-market outlook still lists neon-pink Mahenge spinel as a rising star, nearly two decades after the strike. What the name does to a price tag, and whether the supply story holds up, I will treat with appropriate suspicion in Chapter VII.

Blue, violet, and the rise of grey

Blue spinel divides into two very different citizens. The common one is coloured by iron: steely, slightly moody blues and blue-greys, attractive and honest and priced accordingly. The rare one is coloured by cobalt: a saturated, luminous blue with almost nothing else like it in the natural world. Vietnam's Luc Yen district is the benchmark source, and Rapaport's 2025 outlook calls Vietnamese cobalt-blue spinels strong competitors to sapphire, appealing precisely to collectors who want vivid colour with no treatment story. The same outlook notes consumer appetite for grey and lavender spinels, and here the designers got there first: at Couture, National Jeweler's 2025 coverage singled out Camille Beinhorn's ring around a 4.09-carat lilac-grey spinel and a Zahn-Z ring holding a 1.70-carat grey stone, and the magazine counts spinel among the gemstone icons of the past decade. Grey spinel is genuinely chic — a gem in the exact register of brushed steel and good tailoring — and it remains, for now, one of the best value-per-look propositions in coloured stones. Chapter IV

Origins: Mogok, Mahenge, Luc Yen and Ceylon

Four names do most of the work in the spinel trade — Mogok, Mahenge, Luc Yen and Ceylon — and one of them is the same island gravel our family has worked for three generations.

Mogok and the old country

Origin, in coloured stones, is where geology meets storytelling, and spinel has some of the best stories in the business. The classic address for top red spinel is Mogok, in Myanmar — the same fabled valley that produces the finest rubies, which is no coincidence, since the two minerals crystallise in the same marble country rock. Within Mogok, the most celebrated modern pocket is Man Sin, home of the neon "Jedi" material documented by GIA's field expeditions. Behind Mogok stands the ancestral source: Kuh-i-Lal in Badakhshan, the "red mountain" of Chapter II, still listed by SSEF among the principal origins of fine pinkish-red spinel after more than a thousand years. When a laboratory offers an origin opinion on a red spinel today, Burma and Tajikistan are usually the names being weighed against each other.

Mahenge and Luc Yen: the modern classics

Tanzania's Mahenge district earned its place on the map in a single week of August 2007, when the Ipanko diggings produced those four giant crystals and a colour the market had never seen in quantity. Two decades on, Mahenge remains the reference source for neon pink, and Tanzanian material has now had its coronation at auction — the Harry Winston earrings that made US$2,228,000 at Christie's New York in December 2024 were set with Tanzanian spinels. Vietnam's Luc Yen district, in the country's mountainous north, is the other modern classic: GIA's Gems & Gemology characterised its blue spinel in 2015, and Luc Yen is today the benchmark origin for natural cobalt-blue stones, the ones Rapaport says are luring collectors away from sapphire. Madagascar and Tanzania's other workings round out SSEF's list of principal sources.

Ceylon: the island that never stopped

And then there is the origin closest to this house's heart. Sri Lanka — Ceylon, in the trade's affectionate old usage — is described by its own Export Development Board as the world's second-largest supplier of spinel, in colours running from ruby-red through pink, orange and mauve to blue and black. The island even has house varieties: ceylonite, a dark iron-rich spinel, and gahnospinel, a zinc-bearing blue. Sri Lankan spinel comes out of the illam — the alluvial gem gravels that underlie the island's valley floors, principally in the Ratnapura district — and it comes out of the very same pits that yield the island's sapphires. A Ceylon gem miner does not choose what the gravel gives him; sapphire, spinel, garnet and chrysoberyl arrive in the same washing basket, which is why every gem family on the island learns spinel whether it means to or not. Ours certainly did: three generations in the Ceylon gem fields since the 1960s, and some of the first stones I ever handled as a child were fat blue-grey spinel octahedra straight from the wash, sitting beside the sapphires they had been keeping company underground for a few million years. One Ceylon detail deserves special mention because it is about to matter commercially: natural cobalt-bearing blue spinel has been confirmed from Sri Lankan alluvials, with finds reported around Ratnapura, Okkampitiya and Embilipitiya. I hold the precise localities loosely — that level of detail is dealer- and tourism-grade sourcing — but the existence claim itself is laboratory-corroborated, and SSEF has gone as far as publishing age-dating work on cobalt spinel. Sri Lanka is one of very few confirmed natural cobalt-spinel sources on Earth. Be clear-eyed, though: most Ceylon blue spinel is iron-coloured, handsome and moody rather than electric, and priced accordingly. A Ceylon blue offered at cobalt prices needs cobalt paperwork.

One practical Ceylon note from the family side of the bench. Because island spinel arrives as the sapphire's travelling companion, it spent generations priced like a companion — the stone the dealers set aside while the sapphires were argued over. That era is ending as the world discovers what was in the second tray, but its legacy lingers pleasantly: Ceylon spinel, especially in the violets, mauves and steel blues the island does so well, remains one of the most fairly priced ways to own a completely natural, completely untreated gem with a thousand-year pedigree of its own. When I assess a parcel from the old districts I still test every stone the same way — refractometer first, no exceptions — because the gravel plays the same identity games it played on the medieval trade: I have pulled 'sapphires' from parcels that were spinel, and the occasional 'spinel' that was something else again. The island rewards instruments and punishes assumptions. It always has.

What origin is worth

A closing caution I will repeat in Chapter VIII: origin determination for spinel is a genuine scientific service — SSEF, Gübelin, GIA and Lotus Gemology offer it, using inclusions, trace-element chemistry and spectra matched against reference collections — but an origin opinion is exactly that, an opinion, and the laboratories themselves say so. Pay a premium for Mogok or Mahenge when the stone in front of you deserves it on colour; treat the passport as corroboration, never as the point. Geography makes a stone interesting. It does not make a mediocre stone good.

Chapter V

The Candour Chapter: What Is — and Isn't — Done to Spinel

Spinel's great commercial virtue is that it is essentially never treated — but 'essentially' is doing honest work in that sentence, and since 2015 the exceptions have had teeth.

The stone that mostly tells the truth

Every volume of this library has a candour chapter, and spinel's is the most cheerful one I have written — which is precisely why the fine print matters. Here is the headline, from sources I trust: SSEF states that spinel is not frequently treated, and untreated stones receive the lovely words "No indications of treatment" on its reports. E. Billie Hughes of Lotus Gemology, writing in Gems & Gemology in early 2026, confirms that most spinels passing through gem laboratories are untreated. Set that against ruby, where heat is the default and the label runs to paragraphs — our Ruby Buyer's Handbook tells that story — and you see spinel's quiet superpower: what you see is, almost always, what the earth made. As far back as 2012, an ICA InColor status report was documenting how little treatment spinel historically saw. Almost always. Now for the exceptions, in ascending order of villainy.

Oil and heat: the small print

The most common treatment actually observed in spinel, per the same Lotus Gemology review, is the humblest: oiling — infusing surface-reaching fissures with oil to make them less visible. It is old, it is reversible, it is detectable, and it is acceptable exactly to the degree it is disclosed and priced for. Heating is rarer. Spinel does not respond to the furnace the way corundum does, so there is less to gain, but heated stones exist, and the laboratories can catch them: photoluminescence spectroscopy shows a tell-tale broadening of the chromium emission band in spinel heated to roughly 750°C or more — a criterion documented in Gems & Gemology in 2021 — backed by microscopic evidence like altered, mottled lamellae and glassy healed fissures. Our position on both is the house doctrine you will find across our Treatment Register: a treatment is legitimate when it is disclosed and the price reflects it. The sin is never the oil or the oven. The sin is silence.

Before the villains arrive, a word on proportion, because laboratory reports cost real money and not every stone justifies one. For a modest spinel — the sub-thousand-dollar greys and steely blues that make such superb everyday jewellery — a written invoice declaration from a competent seller, backed by in-house gemmological testing, is a reasonable standard of evidence; the treatment risk profile is simply low. The calculus changes with the price and, crucially, with the colour. Reds and pinks of consequence deserve a report because value concentrates there. Vivid blues deserve a report at almost any serious price, for reasons the next two sections will make uncomfortably clear. And any stone sold with a premium story — unheated, cobalt, Mogok, Mahenge — should carry paper proportionate to the premium: the bigger the claim, the better the evidence. That is not cynicism; it is just how every other market for valuable things already works, and the gem trade is not special.

2015: the diffusion era begins

Then came the year the "never treated" slogan died. In May 2015, GIA's laboratories identified cobalt diffusion treatment of natural spinel: pale, off-colour stones cooked at high temperature in a cobalt-bearing environment until the surface layer absorbed enough colouring agent to mimic fine cobalt blue. GRS issued an alert the same month — 22 May 2015 — reporting that laser-ablation chemical profiling proved cobalt and titanium enrichment to a depth of about 300 microns, warning that the incentives for this treatment were high and that its market appearance was already a reality. Think about what 300 microns means: the colour is a skin. Repolish the stone and you thin the very thing you paid for. Diffusion-treated blues are, to be blunt, a manufactured product wearing a rare gem's costume, and they exist because the price gap between iron blue and cobalt blue is enormous. Where there is a gap that wide, someone will always build a bridge out of chemistry.

The nickel twist and the new rules

The story then took a turn I genuinely admire for its cheek. In 2023, GIA researchers examining stones circulating as "cobalt-diffused" blue spinel discovered that some were nothing of the sort: their colour came from nickel diffusion, a treatment never previously reported in any gem, with surface nickel concentrations running to thousands of parts per million and distinctive absorption bands near 370, 470 and 600 nanometres. Savour that: even the treatment labels on treated spinel were wrong. It is the best argument I know for laboratory testing over seller storytelling — the sellers of those stones did not know what they were selling. The trade's rule-makers have since drawn the boundary properly: in May 2025 the Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee — the body that harmonises report wording for GIA, SSEF, Gübelin and their peers — unanimously approved its Information Sheet 14, ruling that only natural blue spinel whose colour is mainly due to cobalt absorption may be called "cobalt spinel." Diffusion-coloured stones do not qualify. Cobalt-glass-filled stones do not qualify. Iron-dominant blues do not qualify. One term, finally fenced.

So here is the honest summary for a buyer. Spinel remains, in 2026, one of the most trustworthy purchases in coloured stones: the overwhelming majority of stones are exactly what they appear to be, and that is a luxury almost no other gem offers. But the word is "essentially" untreated, never "never" — and the entire weight of the exception falls on one category: vivid blue. For any blue spinel at a serious price, the treatment question is not paranoia, it is arithmetic. The paperwork that answers it is the subject of Chapter VIII.

Chapter VI

The Impostor, Imitated: Natural vs Synthetic

Flame-fusion synthetic spinel has been pouring out of factories since the 1920s, mostly pretending to be other gems entirely — here is how a laboratory tells it from the real thing, and why vintage birthstone jewellery deserves a second look.

A century of factory spinel

There is a rich irony in spinel's second identity problem. Having spent six centuries being mistaken for another gem, spinel spent the last one being manufactured to impersonate everything else. Flame-fusion synthetic spinel — grown by the Verneuil process, essentially raining powdered ingredients through a flame onto a growing boule — has been marketed as faceted gems since the 1920s, and it is one of the cheapest, most abundant synthetic gem materials in circulation. The twist, documented by the International Gem Society and GIA's imitation guides alike, is that most of it was never sold as spinel at all: tinted appropriately, it stood in for aquamarine, blue sapphire, blue zircon, and practically every birthstone in the calendar. If you own a mid-century class ring, a grandmother's "aquamarine," or an inexpensive birthstone pendant from the decades when such things were bought at the chemist, there is a respectable chance you own synthetic spinel and have never known it. This is not a scandal, mostly — the material was cheap and sold cheaply — but with vintage pieces now trading as "estate jewellery" at estate prices, yesterday's honest costume gem becomes today's misrepresentation.

How the bench tells them apart

The good news: this is one of the easier separations in gemmology, which is why it scandalises me whenever it goes unmade. Flame-fusion synthetic spinel is grown with excess alumina to stabilise it, and that shifts its refractive index to about 1.727–1.730, measurably above natural spinel's 1.718 — a five-minute refractometer answer. Under crossed polarising filters, the strained synthetic shows an anomalous cross-hatched shimmer the trade calls "tabby extinction," named for the cat and just as unmistakable once you have met it. Synthetics fluoresce strongly, especially under short-wave ultraviolet. And under the microscope, the biographies diverge completely: the factory stone carries curved growth features and gas bubbles — perfectly round, the giveaway of a melt — where the natural stone carries the angular octahedral negative crystals of Chapter III, little geometric fingerprints of slow growth in rock. For anything doubtful or anything valuable, a report from a major laboratory states "natural" or "synthetic" in plain words, and that word is the whole ballgame. I will resist naming names, but a steady trickle of estate pieces crosses my bench in Sydney wearing stones their paperwork never met. The 'aquamarine' that reads 1.728 on the refractometer and lights up under the short-wave lamp; the mid-century cocktail ring whose big pale 'zircon' shows perfectly round bubbles under magnification. Ten minutes of standard instruments, and a family story quietly rewrites itself. I want to stress that nobody in these stories is usually lying — the piece was sold honestly as costume jewellery seventy years ago, the receipt is long gone, and three inheritances later the stone has been promoted by hope and hearsay. This is why I never appraise from a story, and why you should never buy from one. The instruments are impartial, they are fast, and they do not care what grandmother believed. If the answer matters — for insurance, for probate, for peace — get it measured.

The law of the label

The label, as ever, is where commerce meets law. In the United States, the FTC's Jewelry Guides — 16 CFR Part 23, revised in 2018 — require that a man-made stone be described with "synthetic," "laboratory-grown," "laboratory-created" or an equally clear term immediately preceding the gem name, and they specifically bar calling any filled stone laboratory-grown; violations are actionable as deceptive conduct under the FTC Act. Australia has no gem-specific statute, but it does not need one: selling a synthetic as natural, or a treated stone as untreated, is misleading conduct under the Australian Consumer Law, and the consumer guarantees that attach to consumer purchases apply to gemstones exactly as they do to washing machines. My practical translation of all that law is one sentence: get the words "natural spinel" — or whatever is claimed — in writing, on the invoice, before money moves. Honest sellers write it gladly. The other kind suddenly remember another appointment. And let me say clearly, in the spirit of this library: synthetic spinel, honestly labelled, is a perfectly legitimate product — August babies on a budget have worn it happily for a century, as our Birthstone Handbook recounts. The product is fine. The lie, where there is one, is the problem.

Chapter VII

The Market: What Spinel Costs and Why

From a few hundred dollars a carat to a world auction record near US$30,000 — the spinel price ladder rung by rung, including the honest gap between dealer asking prices and the trade's own price guide.

The ladder, rung by rung

Let us do what the dealer sites will not, and put the whole ladder on one page, sourced. At the bottom, commercial-grade red spinel — included, dark or brownish — trades from roughly US$100 to US$600 a carat, per the 2025 retail guides published by House of Spinel and Venus in Libra. Grey spinel, for all its designer heat, remains modest money: around US$300–500 a carat, and only rarely above US$1,000 even over two carats — which is precisely why I keep recommending it; the look-per-dollar ratio is absurd. Iron-blue material of the Ceylon type starts around US$2,000 a carat for fine examples. Then the air thins. Top unheated red spinel runs US$5,000–10,000-plus a carat, with exceptional Mogok reds quoted above US$20,000. Fine Vietnamese cobalt blue commands US$10,000–20,000-plus. And hovering over every tier is the size problem the International Gem Society states flatly: finished spinels above five carats are genuinely difficult to find, so weight compounds price far faster than in more abundant gems.

Now the sober anchor, and I want you to memorise it because it is the single most useful number in this chapter. GemGuide — the trade pricing authority, cited by JCK in 2026 — puts fine-quality pink spinel of five to just under ten carats at about US$4,500 a carat, and JCK reported an 8.18-carat vivid pink changing hands around US$9,000 a carat as the sort of print that turns heads. Hold those figures beside the dealer rhetoric you will meet online, where exceptional Mahenge stones are offered at US$10,000–50,000 a carat, and the gap tells you exactly what it looks like: the difference between what the trade's own guide says and what a seller hopes. Dealer lore also holds that before the 2007 Mahenge find spinel almost never broke US$3,000 a carat — a tidy narrative of appreciation, but a dealer-published one. The top of that range is asking-price territory, not established market. Negotiate from GemGuide, not from the sticker.

The auction headlines — and what they mean

The headlines are real, and worth understanding precisely. On 24 September 2015 at Bonhams London, the Hope Spinel — 50.13 carats, from the storied collection of Henry Philip Hope, whose name also rides on a rather famous blue diamond — sold for £962,500, about US$1.46 million, or roughly US$30,000 a carat. That set a world auction record per carat for spinel, nearly doubling the previous mark of US$16,000 set only in 2013, and it demolished its own estimate of £150,000–200,000. Then in December 2024, Christie's New York sold a pair of Harry Winston earrings set with reddish-pink Tanzanian spinels of 22.42 and 21.87 carats, no heat per the laboratory, for US$2,228,000 — more than three times the US$400,000–600,000 estimate. Two lessons hide in those results. First, the appetite at the very top is genuine and rising; estimates keep being embarrassed. Second — and this is the reconciliation most price guides skip — the Hope Spinel's US$30,000 a carat does not contradict the US$5,000–10,000 retail ceiling for fine red spinel. The Hope carried two centuries of aristocratic provenance, a great collector's name and a 50-carat body. Auction records price the biography as much as the stone; our Provenance Handbook is devoted to exactly that premium. Your beautiful three-carat Mahenge does not inherit the Hope's per-carat rate any more than your neighbour's watercolour inherits a Turner's.

Spinel versus ruby: the eternal discount

The comparison that frames the whole market: a top red spinel typically trades around one-tenth the price of a comparable unheated ruby. At the record-setting extreme the gap yawns wider still — the Sunrise Ruby, 25.59 carats, made US$32.4 million at Sotheby's Geneva in May 2015, around US$1.27 million a carat, some forty times the Hope Spinel's record rate set the same year. You can read that discount two ways, and the trade does. One: spinel is the informed buyer's red stone, delivering chromium fire, crown-jewel history and near-certain natural, untreated status at a fraction of ruby money. Two: spinel lacks ruby's centuries of brand equity and its liquidity, and the discount is the market pricing that in. Both readings are true at once. What I will not do is tell you the gap must close — plenty of dealers built that sermon into a sales pitch. It might. It might not.

Fashion, value, and a plain word about investment

Which brings me to the plain word. Rapaport's February 2025 outlook reported coloured-stone dealers entering the year optimistic, with US retail demand expected to be robust particularly for rare, untreated stones, colour taking share from diamonds, and collectors treating top untreated goods as a reliable place to hold value — while in the same breath noting price resistance creeping in after rises of 10–20 per cent across the past decade. Meanwhile JCK's 2026 reporting on Mahenge found the dealers themselves split on supply: Lambert Vissot seeing less fine material each year, Rahul Jain seeing markedly more good material over the past year, and experts unable to say whether new production is sustainable or one good pocket. And House of Spinel — a dealer advocate, remember — concedes the resale market below collector grade is thin. There is no spinel price index. So let me be unambiguous, as I am in every volume of this library: nothing in this chapter, or this handbook, is investment advice, and we do not sell gemstones as investments. The auction record at the very top is real and verifiable; everything below collector grade is a fashion market where you should buy for love, pay a documented fair price, and count the joy as the return. Anyone who promises you more than that is selling something other than a gemstone. A candid word on grey, since it is the tier I am asked about most. Grey spinel's rise is real — the designer adoption documented by National Jeweler is genuine, and Rapaport confirms the consumer appetite — but no authority anywhere claims investment value for it, and at US$300–500 a carat the trade's pricing has stayed sensibly calm. When you read that grey spinel prices are 'rising fast', you are reading marketing. My advice is to treat that as liberating rather than disappointing: grey spinel is fashion, priced like fashion, and it happens to be the best-dressed fashion in the gem case. Buy it the way you would buy beautiful tailoring — for the years of wear, not the resale rack — and you will be delighted on exactly the terms the purchase actually offers. The buyer who gets hurt in coloured stones is almost never the one who paid fair money for beauty; it is the one who paid story money and expected the story to compound.

Chapter VIII

The Report, the Checklist and Living with Spinel

Which report to insist on, the exact questions to ask before you pay, and how a Mohs-8 stone with no cleavage earns its place in a ring you never take off.

The report: which laboratory, and what to read

For spinel of any consequence, the names I trust are the ones whose findings have filled this book: GIA, SSEF and Gübelin among the great general houses, Lotus Gemology in Bangkok as the coloured-stone specialist, and GRS. An SSEF report carries the stone's weight, shape, colour, treatment status and — where commissioned — origin opinion, and can be verified online at myssef.ch; its happiest sentence, as Chapter V noted, is "No indications of treatment." What makes a modern major-lab report decisive rather than decorative is the instrument room behind it: GIA's published methods run from the microscope through UV-Vis-NIR and infrared spectroscopy to X-ray fluorescence and laser-ablation mass spectrometry — and that last, chemistry-at-parts-per-million tool is exactly what catches a 300-micron diffusion skin. For blue stones the report is not optional. Under the LMHC's 2025 harmonised wording, a stone earns the words "cobalt spinel" only if it is natural and cobalt-coloured; so for any vivid blue at a serious price, insist the report explicitly confirms natural cobalt colouration and no indications of diffusion. SSEF has even published age-dating research on cobalt spinel — the science stands ready; your only job is to demand its output on paper. One tempering note from Chapter IV: origin lines are expert opinions matched against reference collections, not certificates of birth. Read them with respect and a raised eyebrow. The checklist: seven questions before you pay

Here is the whole handbook compressed into seven questions — in writing, every time. One: is the stone natural or synthetic, stated on the invoice? A century of flame-fusion material makes this the first question, not the last. Two: what is the treatment status? For spinel the answer should usually be the happy one, but you want the words, and for anything significant you want them from a laboratory, not a sales floor. Three: if the stone is a vivid blue — does the report confirm natural cobalt colouration, no diffusion, per LMHC-standard wording? Four: if an origin is claimed, is it backed by a laboratory opinion, and am I paying for the stone or the postcode? Five: how does the price sit against the GemGuide-anchored ladder of Chapter VII — and if it is multiples above, what exactly is the seller claiming justifies it? Six: have I seen the stone in honest light? Colour is the whole game in spinel, so judge it in daylight — by a south-facing window here in Australia, since that soft southern light is the closest thing our hemisphere offers to a neutral witness stand. Seven: what happens after money moves — returns, and the consumer guarantees that attach to consumer purchases under Australian Consumer Law when you buy from an Australian business? A seller who answers all seven promptly and in writing is a seller you can use again for the rest of your life. That is, not coincidentally, the standard this house sets for itself.

And an eighth habit, unnumbered because it happens after you pay: keep the paper with the stone, forever. A spinel outlives its receipts by centuries, and every document that travels with it — invoice, laboratory report, valuation, its Digital Gemstone Passport — is value your heirs will not have to rebuild at their own expense. Half the sad stories in Chapter VI are really this failure: not a dishonest sale, but a lost file. The Black Prince's Ruby is priceless partly because its file survived six hundred years. Yours can too; it just needs a drawer.

Living with spinel

Now the pleasant part: spinel is gloriously easy to live with. Hardness 8 puts it above the everyday quartz dust that slowly sandblasts softer gems; no cleavage means no built-in fault line waiting for the wrong knock; good toughness means it takes to daily wear the way few coloured stones do. It is an entirely legitimate engagement-ring stone — the design questions are covered in our Coloured-Stone Engagement Ring Handbook — and its care routine is warm soapy water, a soft brush, and an annual visit to check the claws. Since the overwhelming majority of spinel is untreated, there is no filler to fret about, though if your particular stone was disclosed as oiled, skip ultrasonic cleaners and let a jeweller who knows its file do the maintenance. And spinel now carries an official date in the calendar: in 2016, the American Gem Trade Association and Jewelers of America added it to the modern birthstone list as a second birthstone for August, beside peridot — only the third amendment to that list since its creation in 1912, following the additions of 1952 and tanzanite in 2002. Jewelers of America's president framed it as answering a strong call from gem enthusiasts and honouring a historically significant stone; I frame it as the paperwork finally catching up with the Black Prince. An August baby can now wear the crown stone by right.

The Ministry way

A last word on how we handle the impostor here in Sydney. Every spinel that enters this house is assessed at my bench — refractometer, polariscope, microscope, spectroscope — before it earns a place in the collection; anything of consequence goes to a major laboratory, and for vivid blues we require the modern wording this book has taught you to demand. Every stone ships with full treatment disclosure and its Digital Gemstone Passport, and every stone may come home, free, for re-authentication at any time, for as long as you or your heirs own it. Six hundred years ago, nobody could tell a buyer what the red stone in the crown really was. Today I can tell you in an afternoon, in writing. That is the whole difference, and it is yours for the asking — come and ask.

Questions buyers actually ask

Is spinel a real, precious gemstone?

Completely. Spinel is a natural mineral — magnesium aluminium oxide — with a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, and it has adorned royalty for the better part of a millennium: the roughly 170-carat red stone at the front of the British Imperial State Crown is a spinel. In 2016 the American Gem Trade Association and Jewelers of America added it to the official modern birthstone list for August. The old precious-versus-semi-precious division is a marketing relic; what matters is beauty, rarity, condition and honest paperwork.

What is the difference between red spinel and ruby?

They are different minerals that grew up in the same neighbourhoods. Ruby is aluminium oxide and doubly refractive; spinel is magnesium aluminium oxide, singly refractive, and was only separated from ruby scientifically in 1783. Both owe their red to chromium, which is why they fooled everyone for centuries. Commercially, a top red spinel typically trades at around one-tenth the price of a comparable unheated ruby — and unlike most ruby, it is almost always untreated.

Is spinel treated?

Essentially never — and that word is chosen carefully. SSEF describes spinel as not frequently treated, and Lotus Gemology's 2026 review found that most spinels passing through laboratories are untreated, with oiling the most common exception and heating rare. The caveat: since 2015, cobalt-diffused blue spinel has circulated (GIA later showed some of it was actually nickel-diffused), so any vivid blue spinel at a serious price should carry a major-laboratory report confirming natural colour.

What is a Jedi spinel?

A trade nickname, not a laboratory term. Field gemmologist Vincent Pardieu applied it to the neon pinkish-red spinels of Man Sin, in Myanmar's Mogok valley — stones so bright they show no dark tone. Research links the glow to an unusually high chromium-to-iron ratio and strong red fluorescence. Because it is marketing language, a stone sold as Jedi should still be judged on what the report says: colour, origin and treatment status.

Is spinel durable enough for an engagement ring?

Yes. At Mohs 8, with good toughness and no cleavage, spinel is one of the best-behaved coloured stones for daily wear — harder than everyday quartz dust, and without the brittleness of stones that split along cleavage planes. Sensible settings and an annual prong check are still wise, as they are for any ring. Warm soapy water and a soft brush are all it needs.

How do I know whether an old birthstone ring holds natural or synthetic spinel?

Assume nothing: flame-fusion synthetic spinel has been mass-produced since the 1920s and is ubiquitous in class rings and inexpensive birthstone jewellery, usually imitating aquamarine, blue sapphire or zircon rather than spinel itself. A gemmologist separates the two by refractive index (synthetics read about 1.727-1.730 against natural spinel's 1.718), curved growth, gas bubbles and a tell-tale cross-hatched extinction under crossed polars. A report from a major laboratory will state natural or synthetic in plain words.

What actually counts as a cobalt spinel?

Since May 2025 there has been a harmonised answer. The Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee — the wording body for GIA, SSEF, Gübelin and their peers — ruled that only natural blue spinel whose colour is mainly due to cobalt absorption qualifies for the name. Stones coloured by cobalt diffusion or cobalt-glass fissure filling do not qualify, and neither do the far more common iron-coloured blues. For any expensive blue spinel, insist the report says natural cobalt colouration with no indications of diffusion.

Is spinel a good investment?

We are gem merchants, not financial advisers, and nothing in this handbook is investment advice. What the record shows: the very top of the market has genuine auction results — the Hope Spinel's roughly US$30,000 per carat in 2015, the Harry Winston Tanzanian spinels at US$2,228,000 in 2024 — but there is no spinel price index, resale below collector grade is thin, and Rapaport noted growing price resistance in 2025. Buy spinel because it is beautiful and honestly priced, and keep the paperwork.
