Anna, our FGAA-qualified gemmologist, on Australia's own sapphire palette — what 'teal' and 'parti' actually mean, why the colour exists at all, and how to buy the one stone that never photographs the same way twice.
Chapter I
Foreword: The Colour the Trade Couldn't Fix
Anna, our FGAA-qualified gemmologist, on the sapphires the trade once wrote off as inky and unsellable — and how the stones nobody could fix became the stones everybody wants.
There is a sapphire on my desk as I write this — Queensland stone, about the size of a shirt button, and depending on where I have left it in relation to the window it is either a deep marine blue or a green so mossy it could pass for tourmaline. Yesterday a client looked at it and said, without a trace of irony, that it was the most beautiful thing we had shown her all afternoon. Forty years ago, a Bangkok rough buyer would have tossed the same stone into the reject pile without slowing his hands.
That reversal is the whole story of this handbook, so let me tell it properly. For most of the twentieth century, sapphire meant blue — the closer to a velvety royal blue, the better — and the industry judged every crystal that came out of the ground against that single target. Australian material, dark and iron-rich, mostly missed it. From the late 1960s, as Richard Hughes documents in his history of heat treatment, Thai dealers bought Australian rough in bulk and shipped it to the cutting town of Chanthaburi, where improved furnace work could coax previously "too dark" stone toward saleable blue. The stones that responded to the fire became anonymous blue sapphire. The stones that refused — the greenish ones, the zoned ones, the stubborn two-toned crystals whose colour heat would only muddy — stayed cheap, and earned the whole Australian category an "inky" reputation it never entirely deserved. Sosna Gems, one of the more candid dealers writing on this corner of the market, makes the point plainly: the material the trade once dismissed as inky, oily or unsellable is the same material now marketed as teal and parti.
The stone the trade threw back
What changed was not the stone. What changed was the buyer. A generation that did not want its grandmother's blue — that wanted a colour no one else at the table was wearing — found the two-toned Australian crystal and fell for exactly the qualities the old trade had tried to burn out of it. By 2026 the affection is on the record: WhoWhatWear's expert panel names naturally coloured stones, including green, teal and Australian parti hues, among the year's key engagement-ring trends, and Brilliant Earth's August 2026 trend report puts coloured centre stones at the top of its list. The reject pile became the front window. I find that genuinely funny, and also instructive: fashion is a wheel, and the stone was patient.
What this handbook will do
I should declare my own position. My family has spent three generations in the Ceylon gem fields since the 1960s, so it takes something for a Ceylon house to sit down and write a love letter to Australian stone — but that is, mostly, what this is. It is also a set of guardrails. Teal and parti sit in the least regulated corner of the sapphire market: the names are marketing rather than gemmology, the grading conventions were written by the people selling the stones, and the price ladder is steep enough that a wrong word can cost you real money. So this handbook does what our whole Buyer's Library tries to do: it names its sources, dates its numbers, tells you what is known, what is trade folklore, and what is honestly uncertain — and it asks nothing from you in return. No email address, no gate, no appointment. Read it, keep it, send it to whoever is about to spend money on a blue-green stone. By the end you will know what the words mean, why the colour exists, where the stones come from, what they cost, and precisely which questions make a seller sit up straighter. That is the entire agenda.
A note on how to read it. Each chapter closes with an "In short" box for the night before a purchase, and the whole volume is built to be skimmed twice and read once. If you only have ten minutes today, read Chapter VII on treatment and Chapter VIII on light — those two are where the money is won or lost in this category. Chapter II
The Words: What 'Teal' and 'Parti' Actually Mean
Teal, mermaid, peacock, parti, bicolour — not one of these words appears in any laboratory manual, and knowing that is the most protective fact a buyer can carry into a purchase.
Walk into this category cold and you will meet a small aquarium of words: teal, mermaid, peacock, parti, bicolour, blue-green. They sound technical. They are not. Not one of them is a defined grade at any gemmological laboratory or standards body — not at GIA, not in CIBJO's Blue Books, not anywhere with an instrument bench. Sosna Gems puts it as bluntly as anyone in the trade: teal, mermaid and peacock are design-era words that describe a blue-green range and "guarantee nothing" — the stone's own colour in daylight is the specification. The word teal itself only took off in roughly the last decade, carried by the alternative-bridal wave. Your grandmother did not skip teal sapphires; the phrase barely existed when she was buying.
The taxonomy nobody ratified
That does not make the words useless — it makes them private dictionaries, and it helps to know whose dictionary you are reading. The most widely circulated taxonomy was published by the Thai-based dealer Navneet Gems in December 2021: teal covers dark-cyan sapphires with gradients of blue and green; "mermaid" is the subset with a 50:50 blue-to-green ratio; "green sapphire" is reserved for stones more than about 90 per cent green; "parti" means two or more colours with a distinct zone demarcation; "bicolor" is any two distinct colours. Useful shorthand — and, as that page itself is a dealer's work, a convention rather than a standard. A second scheme, from Crescent Gems' buyer's guide, splits the range into three positions without fixing percentages at all: teal-blue (blue-dominant), "true balanced teal" (blue roughly equal to green — the most commercially prized position), and teal-green (green-dominant). Nash Gems adds the usage note that in practice "teal sapphire" implies an even blend while "blue-green sapphire" covers a wider band of tones. Three dealers, three overlapping dictionaries, zero laboratories.
The one word in the aquarium doing real gemmological work is parti. It describes something physically specific — two or more colours locked into distinct growth zones within a single crystal, a fixed geography you can map with a loupe. Teal describes a blend; parti describes a boundary. A stone can be both, and many Australian stones are: zones of blue and yellow that read as teal face-up and reveal their parti architecture the moment you tilt them.
As for "peacock" and the rest of the menagerie, treat them as adjectives of mood rather than measurements. One seller's peacock is another's mermaid is a third's deep teal; I have watched a single parcel wear all three names at three successive gem shows. The translation exercise that protects you is always the same: strip the noun, ask for the stone's behaviour in plain terms — how blue, how green, how dark, how evenly, and under which light — and then ask what the laboratory paperwork calls it. Any seller worth your money can perform that translation in a sentence or two without flinching. The ones who retreat into the vocabulary are telling you the vocabulary is doing the selling.
Who wrote the dictionary
One more thing a careful buyer should know. The International Gem Society's much-cited teal article — the one that calls the 50-50 blue-green ratio the "rarest grade" with its sublime, mossy, aqua-like colour — was authored by Navneet Agarwal, a wholesaler of teal sapphires, and last updated in July 2021. I mention this not to criticise anyone; dealers often know their material better than anyone alive. But when the person defining the ideal also sells the ideal, the definition is marketing as well as education, and it deserves the same gentle scepticism you would apply to a wine merchant's notes on his own cellar. No neutral authority has ever ruled that 50:50 is the apex of teal. The market behaves as if balance matters — we will get to that in Chapter VI — but the crisp number is a slogan, not a spec.
What the certificate will say instead
Here is the practical payoff. When a teal or parti stone goes to a major laboratory, the report comes back in plain colour language. GIA-reported stones in this range read "Green-Blue", "Greenish Blue", or — for a parti — wording like "Zoned Blue and Greenish Yellow". Never teal, never mermaid, never peacock. So when a listing announces a "certified teal sapphire", understand what is actually certified: the stone is a natural sapphire of stated weight and colour description. The teal is the seller's word, not the laboratory's. That is not a crime — we use the word ourselves, because it is how buyers search — but the difference belongs in your head at the moment money moves. Chapter III
How the Colour Happens: Iron, Titanium and Volcanoes
Two trace metals, one borrowed electron and a line of extinct volcanoes: the chemistry that paints a single crystal blue, yellow and green — and why no two parti stones repeat.
Pure corundum — aluminium oxide, the mineral we call sapphire — is colourless. Everything you will ever pay for in this category is, chemically speaking, contamination: a scatter of foreign atoms sitting where aluminium should be, amounting to a fraction of a per cent of the crystal and one hundred per cent of its charm. Understanding two of those atoms will let you read every teal and parti stone you ever meet.
Two metals, one handshake
Blue comes from a partnership. When an iron atom and a titanium atom occupy neighbouring sites in the crystal, light can push an electron across from one to the other — an intervalence charge transfer, in the language of the Rock Creek heat-treatment studies that John Emmett and Troy Douthit published in GIA's Gems & Gemology in Winter 1993. That electron handshake absorbs the warm half of the spectrum and hands your eye back blue. Yellow has a different engine: it arises primarily from iron alone, in its ferric form, no titanium required. And green — the colour this whole handbook orbits — is not a third pigment at all. Green is what you see when both mechanisms operate in the same volume of crystal: a blue engine and a yellow engine running together, their outputs mixing on the way to your eye. Teal, in other words, is not one colour. It is an argument between two.
Why one crystal can hold three colours
Now put that chemistry into a growing crystal. Sapphires do not form in an afternoon; they grow in pulses, over geological time, and the soup of trace elements around them changes between pulses. Iron and titanium — sometimes with a whisper of chromium or vanadium — get locked into the crystal unevenly, layer by layer, like tree rings with opinions. Where a growth zone caught iron and titanium together, it is blue. Where it caught iron alone, it is yellow. Where the two regimes overlap, green. That is parti colour: not an accident of cutting, not a treatment, but the crystal's own growth diary, fixed and legible. It is also why, as the Gem Society's parti article and Australian houses like Argyle Jewellers both note, no two parti sapphires repeat — the zoning pattern is as individual as handwriting. When a client asks me why their parti stone has a straight colour boundary running through it like a horizon line, my answer is that they are looking at a few million years of changed weather, sliced and polished.
The volcanic delivery service
Why does Australia produce this material in such abundance? Geology, twice over. First, the delivery: Geoscience Australia describes Australian sapphires as xenocrysts — crystals that formed deep in the crust and were carried to the surface as passengers in alkali-basalt eruptions along the east coast, from the Late Cretaceous through the Cenozoic. The volcanoes died, the basalt weathered, and rivers concentrated the survivors into the gravel beds — placer deposits — where nearly all Australian mining happens today. Second, the recipe: basalt-field sapphire is iron-rich, and iron is the common ingredient in both the blue and yellow engines. Australian crystals therefore run to strong deep yellows and inky blues that converge into green — the exact raw ingredients of teal and parti. The Gemmological Association of Australia's journal, The Australian Gemmologist, summarised the national output in December 2020 as the "BGY suite" — blue, green, yellow — with rarer orange, pink, purple and red as the supporting cast. The palette is not a marketing decision. It is the chemistry of the ground.
The fingerprint in the spectrum
One elegant consequence, worth knowing because it touches origin reports: basalt-hosted blue sapphires carry a spectroscopic accent. GIA's Winter 2019 work on geographic origin determination notes that basalt-related stones show a broad absorption band near 880 nanometres that is always more intense than the band at 580 — a signature that helps laboratories separate them from metamorphic, Ceylon-type sapphires. Your teal stone, in other words, declares its volcanic upbringing to a spectrometer even when it says nothing to the eye. What that fingerprint can and cannot prove about a stone's passport is a longer story, and it gets its own chapter shortly.
Chapter IV
The Australian Fields: From Inverell to Lava Plains
From a river find in 1851 to roughly seventy per cent of world supply: the New England plateau, the Central Queensland gemfields, and the youngest sapphire field in Australia.
Every teal and parti stone in our cabinets began as a pebble in somebody's sieve, so it is worth knowing the ground. The Australian story starts, as so many Australian stories do, with the gold rush: Geoscience Australia records the first documented extraction of sapphire in this country in 1851, from the Cudgegong and Macquarie rivers in New South Wales — diggers chasing gold and finding blue instead. It took decades for anyone to take the blue seriously. Commercial sapphire mining in the New England district did not begin until 1919, and the industry worked by pick, shovel and streambed hand-sieving until mechanised mining arrived in the late 1950s and changed the scale of everything.
Three districts, three characters
Modern Australian production concentrates in three east-coast districts, all of them basalt country. The first is the Inverell–Glen Innes region on the New England Plateau in northern New South Wales, where the Kings Plains area holds what Geoscience Australia describes as some of the richest deposits of gem-quality sapphire ever mined — ground rich enough that Robert Coenraads' 1994 study in the Records of the Australian Museum went looking for the volcanic source rocks feeding Kings Plains Creek. Commercial mining continues there today. The second is the Central Queensland gemfields — Anakie, Rubyvale, Sapphire, The Willows and Glenalva — a district worked for more than a century, where fossickers with buckets still operate alongside commercial plants. The Australian Gemmologist credited the Anakie field in December 2020 with producing amongst the world's best large deep blue, golden yellow and parti-coloured sapphires — and it is Queensland ground, more than anywhere else, that built the parti category. Geoscience Australia's own showcase stone tells you what the field can do: the "Tomahawk Tiger", a Queensland yellow sapphire striped with blue bands, is precisely the kind of crystal an old-school blue merchant would have rejected and a modern parti cutter would fight for.
The youngest sapphire field in Australia
The third district is the one almost nobody outside the trade has heard of: Lava Plains, in far north Queensland. It sits in the McBride basalt province, where the volcanics are less than eight million years old and the youngest flows are a startling seven thousand years or so — recent enough that humans were in Australia to hear them. Work by Sutherland and colleagues in Mineralogical Magazine dates the sapphire-zircon formation there to roughly five to two million years ago, which makes Lava Plains the youngest sapphire field in Australia. It mainly yields deep blue with minor yellow, green and the odd fancy pink. I like Lava Plains as a reminder that sapphire is not a finished story; the continent is still cooking.
Seventy per cent of the world, once
Scale is the part of the Australian story that surprises people most. Through the 1980s, Australia supplied about 70 per cent of the world's sapphires by volume — most of it from New South Wales, most of it shipped out as cheap dark rough for heating overseas, almost none of it credited to Australia by the time it reached a shop window. As mechanised mining spread through other producing countries, the share fell to the 20 to 30 per cent range, where Geoscience Australia places it in the modern era. So Australia has been, within living memory, the world's dominant sapphire source — while carrying a reputation as a minor, murky one. If you have ever wondered how a country's stones could be simultaneously everywhere and invisible, the answer is that they wore other countries' labels.
That history also explains a quirk visitors notice on the gemfields today: the fossicking culture. On the Queensland fields you can still buy a licence, hire a sieve and wash your own gravel — and every season somebody's bucket turns up a zoned stone the old export buyers would have binned and a modern cutter would frame. I cannot promise you a Tomahawk Tiger. I can promise the odds are better than the lottery, and the sunburn is guaranteed.
Big money arrives
The clearest sign the world has re-rated this ground is corporate. Fura Gems — the coloured-stone miner behind major emerald and ruby operations — acquired the Capricorn Sapphire project in Queensland in 2019 and Great Northern Mining in 2020, assembling a combined mining area of roughly 20 square kilometres in Central Queensland, and produced 5.5 million carats of sapphire globally in 2021. In November 2021 the company staged its inaugural Australian rough auction in Bangkok — 900,000 carats of blue, teal, yellow, green and parti sapphire, reported by National Jeweler, and every stone offered untreated. Sit with that for a moment: the material that once left this country anonymously, priced for the furnace, now headlines its own auction under its own flag, unheated, with teal and parti named in the sale literature as categories in their own right. That is what a rehabilitation looks like when it is complete. The stones in our Australian sapphire collection come from exactly this ground, and each one carries its field of origin in its passport wherever it can be established.
Chapter V
The Origin Question: Australia, Montana, Madagascar, Ceylon
Montana runs paler and steelier, Madagascar bright and affordable, Ceylon luminous — and the laboratories themselves concede that naming where a sapphire was born is one of the hardest calls in gemmology.
Teal is not an Australian monopoly, whatever Australian marketing might imply. The blue-green range comes out of Montana, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and Nigeria's Mambilla Plateau as well — nearly all of it, the International Gem Society notes, from basalt-related sources, with Ceylon the notable metamorphic exception. Each origin has an accent, each carries a different price, and the honest comparison is worth more to a buyer than any single seller's patriotism. Including mine.
Montana: the stone heat can fix
The American contender deserves respect and context. Montana's secondary deposits — Rock Creek, the Missouri River, Dry Cottonwood Creek — produce enormous quantities of pale blue, pale green and near-colourless material, characterised in full by GIA in a Spring 2023 study. Here is the structural difference from Australia: Montana material largely responds to the furnace. The heat-treatment experiments Emmett and Douthit reported in Winter 1993, run on more than 75,000 Rock Creek stones, converted roughly 65 to 70 per cent of the pale material to well-saturated blue or yellow. Much American teal on the market is therefore a choice between two futures — heat it toward blue, or sell it as it came out of the ground — whereas a zoned Australian parti is heat-resistant almost by definition: the furnace would not improve it, only muddy the very contrast that makes it valuable. Neither path is better in the abstract; they are simply different stones with different relationships to fire, and the treatment line on the paperwork tells you which one you are holding.
The four accents of teal
Colour first, in the trade's own shorthand — Crescent Gems' buyer's guide and Navneet Gems' Montana-versus-Australia comparison sketch the same map. Montana teal runs paler and steelier: a cool, steel blue-green, often silvery, very much of its landscape. Australian teal is darker, richer and more saturated, frequently with the visible zoning that can produce a genuine 50:50 split face-up. Madagascar offers bright, balanced teal in good sizes at accessible prices — the volume value play of the category. And Ceylon teal, from the island where my own family learned this trade, is the luminous one: lighter-handed, glowing, balanced, and priced accordingly at the top of most retail ladders. Now money: Montana stones carry a domestic-sourcing premium in the American market, and the trade comparison sites — RichosRocks among them, echoed by Crescent — put Australian teal at commonly 30 to 50 per cent below Montana equivalents per carat. That is a trade claim rather than an audited index, but it matches what we see at the wholesale level. Australian teal is currently the value position in the category: dominant-origin geology at a discount that exists mostly for historical reasons. Two caveats keep this map honest. First, these are tendencies, not laws: I have handled Australian stones with a Ceylon glow and Madagascan stones dark enough to pass for Queensland, and a single field can produce the full spread in one wash of gravel. Second, the accents blur precisely because the trade wants them to — rough migrates to cutting centres, parcels mix, and a stone's commercial biography is not always its geological one. Which is why the section that follows may be the most important in this chapter.
How sure can a laboratory be?
Now the candour clause. Geographic origin determination for blue sapphire is one of the hardest calls in all of gemmology, and you should know that before you pay a premium for any origin line — Australian, Ceylon or otherwise. GIA devoted a special issue of Gems & Gemology to the problem in Winter 2019, and its conclusions are refreshingly unheroic: trace-element chemistry and inclusion scenes overlap significantly between localities; the reference collections behind GIA's blue-sapphire calls held 606 metamorphic and 342 basalt-related samples; laboratories sometimes decline to state an origin at all; and different laboratories can reach different conclusions on the same stone. The 880-nanometre basaltic fingerprint from Chapter III does real work — separating basalt-hosted from metamorphic material is the easier half of the problem — but pinning a basalt stone to Australia rather than another basaltic source is expert opinion, not arithmetic. Our position as a house: we state origin where the evidence and paperwork support it, we tell you which laboratory said so, and we never price a stone as if an opinion were a certainty. Chapter VI
Grading Without a Rulebook: The Blue-to-Green Ratio
No laboratory on Earth defines an ideal blue-to-green ratio, so here is how the market actually prices the spectrum — and how to judge a stone when no rulebook exists.
Ask the teal market what makes a perfect stone and it will answer in unison: fifty-fifty. Equal blue, equal green, the "mermaid" ideal, the balanced middle. Ask the market who decided that, and the room goes quiet. No laboratory or standards body has ever defined an ideal blue-to-green ratio for sapphire. The 50:50 ideal is a dealer convention popularised across the 2010s and 2020s — written down most crisply in Navneet Gems' own taxonomy, amplified by the dealer-authored IGS article, and repeated until it acquired the texture of fact. Sosna Gems' corrective is the one to keep: the words guarantee nothing; the stone in daylight is the specification.
The ideal nobody legislated
And yet — here is the interesting part — the slogan is not wrong about the money. Crescent Gems' buyer's guide, which declines to fix percentages at all, confirms the market's revealed preference: the balanced middle of the spectrum, "true balanced teal", is the most commercially prized position. Blue-dominant stones price toward ordinary blue-sapphire money, because that is what they nearly are. Green-dominant stones are the cheapest corner of the range, still carrying the old "green sapphire" discount. The premium lives in the tension — a stone that refuses to resolve into either parent colour. So treat 50:50 the way you would treat any slogan built on a real observation: the market pays for balance; the crisp number is marketing. And remember, before you pay a premium for a seller's claimed ratio, that the ratio is not even a fixed property of the stone — it moves with the light, as Chapter VIII will show, and a stone that is 50:50 under the seller's daylight lamp may be 70:30 at your dinner table.
Flaw or feature: the parti inversion
Parti stones add a genuinely philosophical wrinkle, and I want to lay it out honestly because it explains so much confusion about prices. In GIA's classic blue-sapphire value framework — the Sapphire Quality Factors that shaped a century of pricing — the ideal stone is a violetish blue of even colour, and visible colour zoning is a defect: cutters orient rough specifically to hide zoning, and a poorly cut stone with obvious zones is marked down. The parti market takes that exact doctrine and inverts it. Zoning displayed face-up — the blue-yellow horizon, the two-toned split — is the feature the buyer is paying to see. Both positions are true simultaneously. Zoning is a flaw in a blue sapphire and the entire point of a parti, and neither camp is confused; they are grading different categories. The practical rule for a buyer: decide the category first, the grade second. If you are buying a blue sapphire, zoning should cost the seller money. If you are buying a parti, crisp and beautifully placed zoning should cost you money. What you should never accept is a seller pricing a stone as a parti while apologising for its zoning, or vice versa — that is a stone that has not decided what it is, being sold at whichever price runs higher.
Judging a stone with your own eyes
Since no rulebook exists, here is the bench routine I use, translated for civilians. First, tone: the classic Australian failure mode is excess darkness, the old inky inheritance — hold the stone at arm's length in good daylight and ask whether the colour still reads, or merely the darkness. Second, saturation: grey and brown are the quiet killers of blue-green; a fine teal looks lit from within even when small. Third, the ratio: judge it yourself, in daylight, face-up — never from a listing's adjective, and never from a single photograph. Fourth, the zoning: face-up through a loupe, ask whether the zones sit where the cutter meant them to sit, symmetrical and deliberate, or wander across the table like an apology. Fifth, the cut itself: teal rough is expensive enough now that windowed, belly-heavy commercial cutting is common; a well-cut stone returns light evenly across the face and holds its colour when it moves. None of this requires my qualification — it requires daylight, patience and the nerve to trust your own eyes over a product description. The stone that stops your breathing at arm's length in daylight is the right stone, whatever its ratio.
One last permission slip, because buyers in this category often seem to need it: you are allowed to prefer the "wrong" ratio. Blue-dominant teal is cheaper than balanced teal for reasons of fashion, not beauty; green-dominant stones are cheaper still, and some of the most striking rings we have ever had a hand in sat at the green end the ladder scorns. When your taste disagrees with the market, your taste is buying at a discount. There are worse positions for a buyer to occupy.
Chapter VII
The Unheated Advantage: Treatment, Proof and the Law
Most fine teal and most parti sapphire sells unheated — not from virtue, but because heat can destroy the very colour it normally improves. Here is how that is proven, and what the law demands.
If you retain one commercial fact from this handbook, make it this one. Sapphire, as a species, is a heavily treated stone — the figure quoted throughout the trade, including by The Natural Sapphire Company, is that around 95 per cent of all sapphire sold has been heated, and that number, while an estimate rather than a census, is nobody's idea of a scandal. Heat treatment is centuries old, stable, permanent and legitimate when disclosed. But the teal and parti corner of the market runs against the species: Brisbane jeweller Bentley De Lisle puts the commercially sold Australian sapphire that is unheated at roughly 70 to 85 per cent — another trade estimate, and I flag it as such, because no laboratory census exists. Estimates aside, the supply-side evidence points one way: Fura's entire 900,000-carat inaugural Australian auction in November 2021 was offered untreated, at commercial scale, to the most treatment-literate buyers on Earth.
Why this category ships unheated
The reason is not virtue; it is chemistry, and it should reassure you more than virtue would. Heating exists to improve stones toward a single saturated target colour — historically blue. But a parti sapphire's value is its zoned contrast, and the furnace's whole job is to homogenise; as Nash Gems and Crescent Gems both note, heating can soften or destroy the exact demarcation a parti buyer is paying for. Likewise fine teal: its colour is a standing negotiation between an iron-titanium blue and an iron yellow, and heat renegotiates the terms unpredictably. The stones stay out of the furnace because the furnace has nothing to offer them. Reconcile that with history and the old paradox resolves: for decades, Australian rough went to Thailand precisely to be heated — that was the blue-convertible fraction, per Hughes' account of the export era. Today's domestically marketed teal and parti segment is drawn from the fraction that fire could never help, which is why it trades overwhelmingly in its natural state. The market has noticed the asymmetry: JewelleryNet's February 2025 trade survey quotes dealer Jonathan Zabihi of Brilliant Colours reporting suppliers discounting heated sapphires by 10 to 20 per cent while unheated prices held firm.
Proving a negative
"Unheated" is a claim about what never happened, and proving a negative is delicate work. No single instrument settles it. The FTIR spectrometer beloved of certificate-speak has a known trap: as Lotus Gemology's laboratory guidance explains, a weak-to-medium peak at 3309 wavenumbers occurs in both heated and unheated sapphire, so an FTIR line alone proves less than sellers sometimes imply. The decisive evidence is microscopy — the state of the stone's rutile silk. Intact, unaltered needles of silk say the stone never met serious fire; fused, dotted, partially dissolved silk says it did; and, per Lotus Gemology's work on rutile in corundum, high-temperature treatment around 1650 degrees produces the disordered internal "blue spots" that betray the furnace. Around the microscope sit the supporting instruments — ultraviolet luminescence, UV-Vis spectroscopy — and recent academic work (a 2025 study in Solid Earth on detecting heated geuda material) keeps sharpening the toolkit. What this means for you is simple: an unheated claim should trace to a laboratory report or a written guarantee from someone with the instruments and the qualification to make it — not to a listing adjective.
What the law actually requires
Now the part most guides skip entirely. Treatment disclosure is not a courtesy; in the two markets most Australians buy from, it is the law. In the United States, the FTC's Jewelry Guides — 16 CFR section 23.22, revised in July 2018 — make it deceptive to fail to disclose a gemstone treatment where the treatment is not permanent, requires special care, or significantly affects the stone's value. In Australia, section 18 of the Australian Consumer Law prohibits misleading or deceptive conduct in trade, and silence can itself mislead where disclosure is reasonably expected — and the ACCC has published jewellery-specific guidance since 2005 covering treatment disclosure and terms like 'created' and 'synthetic'. Above both sits the industry's own rulebook: CIBJO's Gemstone Blue Book requires disclosure of all treatments in standardised vocabulary, plus any special care requirements. When you buy as a consumer, the Australian Consumer Law's guarantees apply to your purchase from a business trading in Australia — including many overseas sellers who market to Australian buyers. None of this machinery makes treatment wrong — let me say it again, because it is the house creed: a treated stone honestly disclosed and priced accordingly is a legitimate purchase. The sin, everywhere and always, is silence.
The house rule
Ours is written down where you can check it. Every treatment we ever encounter is described in plain English on our public Treatment Register, every stone's status is recorded in its Digital Gemstone Passport, and the unheated stones live together in our unheated collection. And the single most protective sentence in this entire handbook costs you nothing: ask any seller, in writing, "Is this stone treated, and how?" A trustworthy answer is one plain sentence. A paragraph that never quite answers is also an answer.
Keep the paperwork, too. Whatever you buy and wherever you buy it, staple the written treatment answer to the receipt and keep both alongside the stone's laboratory report — that small dossier is what turns a pretty object into a documented one when it is insured, valued, resold or handed down. It is the habit this whole library keeps trying to teach: in gemstones, memory fades and paper does not.
Chapter VIII
Light: Dichroism, Zoning and Buying from a Screen
A teal sapphire is bluer at noon and greener at dinner, and no photograph can hold both truths at once — this is how to buy a moving target from a screen.
The complaint I hear most often about this category — "the stone that arrived is not the stone in the photos" — is usually not a fraud story. It is an optics story, and once you understand the two mechanisms involved, you can turn the moving target from a risk into the whole reason you wanted the stone.
One crystal, two colours
Corundum is a uniaxial crystal, and it is dichroic: light entering it splits into two rays — ordinary and extraordinary, in the language of GIA's Fall 2014 Gems & Gemology introduction to pleochroism — and the two rays emerge as different colours. In blue sapphire the split is typically violetish blue in one direction and greenish blue in the other. Rock the stone and the mixture reaching your eye changes; the colour genuinely is direction-dependent, before a camera ever gets involved. This is also where a century of cutting doctrine comes from: GIA's sapphire quality guidance describes how cutters orient classic blue rough so the violetish-blue ray faces up and the green tones are minimised. Teal cutting is that doctrine, inverted. The teal cutter orients the stone to invite the green to the party the old trade spent a hundred years disinviting. When people say teal feels modern, that is literally true at the level of lapidary geometry.
Bluer at noon, greener at dinner
The second mechanism is the light itself. Teal stones shift appearance with the illuminant — bluer under daylight and cool light, greener and warmer under incandescent bulbs — and Crescent Gems' guide makes the admission every honest seller should make: this colour shift is almost impossible to capture accurately in product photography. Note, this is not the pleochroism wearing a disguise, and it is worth keeping the two ideas separate, a confusion Nekta New York's explainer tackles head-on: pleochroism is direction-dependent colour from the crystal's optics; zoning is fixed geography of colour inside the stone; and the illuminant shift is a third thing again — the same stone honestly reporting on different light sources. A fine teal is all three phenomena wearing one dress. It is also why the laboratory's words can disagree with your phone: labs grade colour under controlled, standardised lighting, as GIA's account of how it analyses coloured stones describes, while your kitchen runs uncalibrated warm LEDs. The report is not wrong and neither are your eyes; they are answering different questions.
Screens add their own layer of mischief. Every phone camera imposes a white balance — its own guess at what neutral light looks like — and that guess drags a teal stone toward whichever parent colour the algorithm prefers that day. Two honest videos of the same stone, shot on two phones in the same room, can disagree with each other; neither is lying, both are editorialising. The lesson is not to distrust every listing but to stop expecting a screen to settle a question only daylight can. Treat every image as testimony rather than evidence, and reserve the verdict for the stone in your hand.
A buying protocol for the screen age
Most teal and parti stones are now bought from screens, so here is the protocol we recommend — and follow ourselves when we buy. One: never decide from photographs alone; require video, and require it in at least two lighting environments, daylight and warm indoor. A seller who shows the stone only under one carefully chosen lamp is showing you one-half of a two-faced stone. Two: watch the stone move. Video that rocks the stone through an arc reveals the dichroism, the zoning and the cut's light return all at once; a static, cropped loop conceals all three. Three: ask which lighting the hero image used — an honest seller answers instantly and precisely. Four: when the stone arrives, audition it before you judge it — by a south-facing window for soft, even daylight, then under your warmest evening lamp, then outdoors at midday. You have not met the stone until you have met both of its faces. Five: buy from sellers whose return window survives that audition. We wrote an entire companion volume on remote buying — The Online Gem Buyer's Handbook — but for teal specifically, the shift is the test of the seller: the dealers who photograph it honestly are the ones who love the stone for what it is.
And a word for the person receiving, rather than choosing, the stone: if a teal ring is being planned as a surprise, the giver should know the shift is coming. More than one recipient has quietly panicked in week two, convinced the ring had somehow faded, when the only thing that changed was the season's light. Tell them — or leave this handbook somewhere conspicuous. A stone with two faces is a far better story when everyone knows it has them.
Chapter IX
The Market, the Price and the Ring
What teal and parti actually cost by tier, what has happened to prices since 2012, and why a Mohs-9 stone with no cleavage planes makes an unusually sensible engagement ring.
Let us finish where every buyer eventually arrives: the money, and the finger. Both deserve numbers with dates on them, so that is what you will get — along with a plain statement I will make twice, because the category's recent run makes it necessary: nothing in this chapter is investment advice. We sell gemstones, not financial products, and the only return we promise is the one where you look at your hand and feel glad.
The ladder, in numbers
Start at the wholesale floor: JewelleryNet's February 2025 GEMSWORLD survey put one-carat Australian sapphire at US$125 to 350 per carat wholesale. Retail, per Crescent Gems' 2026 ladder, climbs in recognisable tiers: commercial-grade stones under a carat at roughly US$200 to 600 per carat; well-balanced Madagascan and Australian stones of half a carat to a carat at US$400 to 1,000; fine balanced Ceylon stones around a carat, with a GIA report, at US$1,000 to 2,500; vivid balanced stones with a pronounced colour shift at US$2,000 to 5,000; and exceptional stones over two carats at US$3,000 to 8,000 and beyond. As a single reference point in all that scaffolding, Fine & Flux puts typical sought-after teal at around US$800 per carat for a one-carat stone at retail. The practical use of the ladder is not precision — every stone argues its own case — but position: ask any seller where their stone sits on it and why. A seller who cannot place their own stone on a public price ladder is asking you to buy the adjective, not the sapphire.
The ten-year run
The trajectory is real and documented. Star Mountain Gems tracks teal rough from around US$100 per carat in 2012 to over US$350 now, and models Montana teal appreciating at 5 to 8 per cent a year over its ten-year horizon — one dealer's model, noted as such. Ceylons Munich reports teal prices roughly doubling since 2022 while still sitting below fine pure blue. The Australian market analysis at Gems and More puts unheated blue sapphire on about 16 per cent annual growth as of early 2026, with unheated stones commanding a 30 to 50 per cent premium over heated equivalents, and credits parti and teal demand to Millennial and Gen Z buyers hunting one-of-a-kind engagement stones. The demand side has texture, too: JewelleryNet reports Japanese buyers specifically seeking calibrated parti-colour Australian sapphire, and quotes Dave Bindra of B&B Fine Gems on the state of fine supply — the biggest challenge, he says, is finding the top five per cent. When a stone the trade used to throw back is being chased in calibrated sizes by the world's most exacting wholesale market, the rehabilitation from Chapter I is no longer sentiment; it is a purchase order.
Boom or bubble?
So is it a bubble? Here is both sides, honestly. The bull case: a decade of organic demand growth, three separate 2026 bridal-trend citations (WhoWhatWear's expert panel, Brilliant Earth's August 2026 report, Valley Rose's December 2025 forecast), fine unheated supply described as at an all-time low, and prices that have doubled since 2022 without stalling the category. The bear case: JewelleryNet's own reporting notes price resistance emerging after two years of unprecedented growth; the category's premium rests partly on a trade name no laboratory recognises; and fashion built the demand, which means fashion can unbuild it — Fine & Flux, to its credit, concedes the trend's longevity is the unanswerable question. No authority currently calls teal a bubble in print, and I will not pretend to settle what the trade cannot. I will only repeat the promise: buy the stone because it stops your breath in daylight, at a price the ladder supports — never because a chart went up. That is the second telling. It stays true.
The ring question
And the finger. Here the answer is unusually clean, and it comes from GIA's own care guidance: corundum is 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond among mainstream ring stones — and the scale is non-linear, with the 9-to-10 gap the largest on it, so respect diamond's supremacy without overreading it. More practically: sapphire has no cleavage planes and excellent toughness, so against the accidental knocks that define real life — door frames, gym bars, car doors — it resists chipping better than a diamond, which for all its hardness carries cleavage planes a sharp blow can find. A teal or parti sapphire is, bluntly, one of the most sensible objects you can put on a hand for fifty years: hard enough to shrug off keys and sand, tough enough to survive the door frame, and interesting enough that you will still be discovering its moods in year thirty. Set it sensibly, clean it occasionally, and it will outlast the marriage certificate's paper. Questions buyers actually ask
What exactly is a parti sapphire?
A parti sapphire is a single natural sapphire crystal that shows two or more distinct colours — most often blue, green and yellow — separated by a visible zone boundary. The zoning exists because trace elements such as iron and titanium were distributed unevenly while the crystal grew, so the pattern is fixed in the stone and no two parti sapphires repeat. It is natural growth zoning, not a treatment and not an assembled stone.
Are teal sapphires real sapphires?
Completely. A teal sapphire is natural corundum — the same mineral as a classic blue sapphire — coloured blue-green by iron and titanium. What is not official is the word: 'teal' is a trade term with no laboratory definition, so a report will describe the stone as green-blue, greenish blue or blue-green rather than teal.
Will a laboratory report say 'teal' or 'parti'?
No major laboratory prints those words. GIA describes such stones in plain colour language — a teal stone as 'Green-Blue' or 'Greenish Blue', a parti as something like 'Zoned Blue and Greenish Yellow'. If a seller implies that a laboratory has certified a stone as teal, they are overreaching; ask to see the exact colour wording on the report.
Are teal and parti sapphires heated?
Usually not, which is unusual for sapphire. Most fine teal and the majority of parti stones sell unheated, because heat can shift the iron-driven colour balance and soften the zoning that defines a parti. Trade estimates put roughly 70 to 85 per cent of commercially sold Australian sapphire as unheated, against an often-quoted 95 per cent treatment rate for sapphire globally — but estimates are not proof, so always ask for the treatment status in writing.
Why does my teal sapphire look different in photos than in person?
Two honest reasons. Corundum is dichroic, so the stone genuinely transmits different colours in different directions, and teal sapphires shift with the light source — bluer in daylight and cool light, greener and warmer under incandescent bulbs. No single photograph can hold both truths at once, which is why careful sellers show video in several lighting environments.
Are Australian sapphires good quality?
Yes — and historically underpriced. Geoscience Australia records that Australia supplied about 70 per cent of the world's sapphire by volume in the 1980s, and the Central Queensland gemfields produce some of the world's best large parti-coloured stones. Australian teal commonly trades below comparable Montana material per carat, which currently makes it the value position in the category rather than a compromise.
Is a teal sapphire durable enough for an engagement ring?
It is one of the most sensible engagement stones there is. Corundum sits at 9 on the Mohs scale — second only to diamond among mainstream ring stones — and unlike diamond it has no cleavage planes, so it resists chipping from an accidental knock. With a sound setting and occasional cleaning, a teal sapphire is a genuine daily-wear stone.
How much should I expect to pay for a teal sapphire?
As a broad 2026 retail ladder: commercial stones under a carat run about US$200 to US$600 per carat, balanced Madagascan and Australian stones US$400 to US$1,000, fine balanced Ceylon stones with a GIA report US$1,000 to US$2,500, and vivid, colour-shifting or exceptional stones from US$2,000 to beyond US$8,000 per carat. Ask any seller to place their stone on that ladder and explain why — and remember that none of this is investment advice.
