Black opal takes its name from body tone rather than from the colours it shows: a dark base absorbs stray light, so the play-of-colour reads with more contrast than it would on a pale ground. It is the least common of the body-tone grades, and matching opals for a pair is one of the harder tasks in the trade, since no two stones behave alike. Designed by Ministry of Gems, handcrafted in our Pitt Street workshop, assessed here in Sydney.
