Few gems capture a mood the way aquamarine does. Its name comes from the Latin for "seawater", and the best stones look exactly like that — a clear, serene blue with the calm of a still ocean. It is the birthstone of March, a favourite of minimalist design, and one of the most wearable coloured gems of all.

What exactly is aquamarine?

Aquamarine is the blue member of the beryl family — the same mineral that gives us emerald. At 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale it is comfortably hard enough for daily wear, and unlike its green sibling it typically grows remarkably clean, so fine aquamarines are expected to be eye-clear.

What drives value

• Colour depth. Most aquamarine is a pale sky blue; value climbs as the blue deepens. The most prized shade is a saturated sea-blue with no grey.
• Clarity. Eye-clean is the standard — cloudiness lowers value noticeably.
• Cut. Aquamarine rewards crisp geometric cuts: emerald cuts and elongated baguettes show its glassy clarity beautifully.
