What is a Ceylon sapphire?
A Ceylon sapphire is a sapphire mined in Sri Lanka (historically called Ceylon), prized for its bright, luminous, well-saturated blue that returns light to the eye instead of darkening. Sri Lanka is one of the oldest sapphire sources on earth, with a gem trade stretching back more than two thousand years.
Ceylon stones form in metamorphic rock and are recovered from alluvial "gem gravels." Because the host geology is comparatively low in iron, the blues stay clear and vivid rather than inky — the classic cornflower and royal blues that set the historical benchmark for fine sapphire. Sri Lanka is also the world's most important source of padparadscha, the rare pink-orange sapphire, as well as white, pink, and yellow sapphires.

What is an Australian sapphire?
An Australian sapphire is a sapphire mined in Australia — chiefly the New England fields of New South Wales and the Central Queensland fields around Anakie and Rubyvale — known for deep blues with a distinctive teal or green undertone, and for unique parti colours. Australia is one of the world's largest sapphire producers by volume.
Australian sapphires form in basaltic (volcanic) rock, which is richer in iron. That extra iron is what gives them their signature depth — a rich blue that often carries teal or green, rather than the lighter cornflower of Ceylon. It is also the origin of the parti sapphire: a single stone showing two or three colours (typically blue, green, and yellow) at once. Parti sapphires are effectively an Australian signature and have built a strong international collector following.

How do the colours actually differ?

Heated vs unheated: which sapphires are treated, and does it matter?
Over 90% of sapphires on the market are heat-treated to improve colour and clarity; an unheated, untreated stone is genuinely rare and commands a significant premium — and it matters for both value and collectability. Heat treatment is permanent, stable, and widely accepted, so a heated sapphire is still a real, natural sapphire and a beautiful choice. But an unheated stone is nature's colour, unaltered, and that rarity is what connoisseurs pay for.

How do you verify a sapphire's origin and treatment?
You verify origin and treatment with an independent gemmological laboratory report — from labs such as GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, or GRS — and by checking that report number against the lab's own online database. Never rely on a seller's verbal assurance alone.
What to look for:
- The Treatment field. The gold standard wording is "No indications of heating" or "Unheated." Anything vague ("natural colour," "may be heated") is not a no-heat guarantee.
- The Origin field. A report stating country of origin (e.g. Sri Lanka / Ceylon or Australia) is what backs up a single-origin claim. Origin determination is a specialist call and the lab name matters.
