In the gem gravels of Ratnapura, spinel has always arrived uninvited. It comes up out of the same illam — the water-worn, gem-bearing layer our family has worked since the 1960s — in the same washing basket as sapphire and chrysoberyl, because the geology that makes one makes the others. For most of the last century the spinels were set to one side. They were the stones you kept for yourself, or sold cheaply to someone who knew what they were looking at. In the past three years, buyers have begun asking for them by name.
That shift is worth examining slowly, because red spinel is the clearest case in the coloured-stone trade of a gem whose price has been shaped less by what it is than by what it was mistaken for.
What red spinel actually is
Spinel is magnesium aluminium oxide, MgAl2O4. Ruby is corundum, aluminium oxide. They are different species with different chemistry and different crystal systems, and the only reason they were confused for a thousand years is that the instruments needed to tell them apart did not exist until the nineteenth century.
The confusion was never foolish. In red spinel the colour comes from chromium — the same chromophore that colours ruby. Trace chromium in the lattice absorbs in the yellow-green, transmits red, and fluoresces under ultraviolet light, which is why fine red spinel glows in sunlight in the way collectors call "living" colour. Two stones lit by the same element will look like relatives.
Where they part company is structure, and the difference is diagnostic. Spinel crystallises in the cubic system, which makes it singly refractive: light passes through without being split in two. Ruby is trigonal and doubly refractive. In practice this means spinel shows no pleochroism — no shift of colour as you rotate the stone — and no doubling of the back facets under magnification. A polariscope separates the two in seconds. A refractometer reading of about 1.718, with no birefringence, closes the question entirely. Any competent gemmologist can do this at a bench in under a minute.
Single refraction also gives spinel its optical character: with no haze from doubled facet edges, the light comes back in single, distinct returns rather than the softer, layered glow of a sapphire. Collectors who handle both tend to call spinel the more awake stone.
On wearability, spinel is a genuinely practical gem. It sits at 8 on the Mohs scale — below ruby and sapphire at 9, above every quartz, beryl and tourmaline — and it has no true cleavage, which matters more than hardness for a stone that will be knocked against door frames for forty years. For a daily-worn ring, red spinel asks for no allowance beyond ordinary care.
Where it comes from
The trade currently draws red and pink spinel from a handful of countries, each with its own character: Madagascar, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Tanzania and Vietnam.
Mogok, Myanmar is the historic benchmark. Burmese reds are the stones against which the species is measured, and the finest of them — a hot, slightly pinkish red of high saturation — have acquired the trade nickname "jedi". Treat that word carefully. It is a dealer's term of enthusiasm, not a laboratory grade, and it is applied far more often than it is earned.
Mahenge, Tanzania changed the modern market. A 2007 discovery of jumbo-size pinkish-red spinel crystals in the Mahenge district started a rush for the gem, and it is Mahenge material — neon, almost fluorescent pink-red — that put spinel in front of designers who had never stocked it.
Sri Lanka, our own ground, yields spinel across a wide range: true reds, pinks, and the lavenders and greys that have lately found their own following. Ceylon spinel tends toward slightly lighter, cooler tones than Burmese material, and it is frequently the best-value fine colour on a tray.
Tajikistan deserves mention for history rather than volume. The Kuh-i-Lal deposits supplied the great "balas rubies" of the medieval world — including several celebrated crown stones that are, in fact, spinel.
A stone that needs no treatment still needs disclosure. The sin has never been the heat; it has always been the silence.
The treatment question, answered honestly
This part of the spinel story is usually told badly, in both directions. One version says spinel is never treated — close to true for fine red material, and a reasonable starting assumption, but not a fact you should buy on. The other says spinel is now riddled with treatment, which conflates colours and is simply wrong.
The accurate position is this. Low-temperature heating of spinel is documented and does occur, principally to improve blue and violet material. Two diffusion treatments have been identified by the Gemological Institute of America in the past decade, and both are worth knowing by name. From 2015, GIA laboratories reported cobalt diffusion of natural spinel, which takes off-colour natural material and drives cobalt into it at high temperature to produce a strong blue. In February 2023, GIA's New York laboratory identified a previously unrecorded nickel diffusion treatment, which produces blue-to-green colour in pale spinel and leaves artificially healed fractures behind from the heating. Both are detectable — by chemical analysis, by colour concentration at facet junctions, and by the altered inclusions that high-temperature treatment leaves in its wake.
Note what those treatments have in common: they make blue and green stones. Neither is a route to red. So for red spinel specifically, the treatment risk is genuinely low — lower than for almost any comparable gem, and far lower than for ruby, where heat is the norm and lead-glass filling is common. That is a real advantage and we say so plainly.
But low is not none, and it is not the only risk. The greater exposure with red spinel is synthetic material. Flame-fusion synthetic spinel has been manufactured in quantity since the early twentieth century, it is cheap, and it turns up set in old jewellery, in inherited pieces, and in parcels sold by people who genuinely do not know what they have. A large, flawless, vividly red "spinel" at a price that feels like a discovery is usually a laboratory product.
Our position, as with every stone we sell: a treatment is legitimate when it is disclosed, and illegitimate the moment it is not. Ask, and expect a straight answer. The market now
Spinel is having a documented run, and the numbers are public.
Writing in JCK on 12 August 2026, Victoria Gomelsky reported that spinel was a mainstay of the Tucson gem shows in February, sought after by scores of designers despite increased competition for top material, with prices "on a seemingly inexorable climb upward" and now approaching pink sapphire levels. The GemGuide figures she cites put extra-fine pink spinel of 2 to 5 carats at US$2,750 to US$4,200 per carat, against pink sapphire of the same quality and size at US$3,750 to US$6,500 per carat. Lavender and lilac spinel in the same bracket sits far lower, at US$550 to US$750 per carat.
The auction room tells a consistent story at the top end. At Sotheby's Geneva High Jewelry sale reported on 24 May 2025, a 6.24-carat spinel ring estimated at CHF16,000–22,000 sold for CHF48,260, and a very fine 10.91-carat cushion-shaped Burmese red spinel, unheated, estimated at CHF70,000–110,000, sold for CHF381,000 — more than three times its high estimate.
Set that against the wider trade picture. Reporting from AGTA GemFair Tucson on 17 February 2026, National Jeweler quoted Gemworld president Stuart Robertson: "What's active today is either the really high end, scarce product, or it is the low end. The middle of the road … has been very stagnant now." Spinel is one of the few species currently active at both ends of that barbell — collector-grade reds competing at auction, and lavenders and greys selling briskly to designers at a fraction of the price. The same report noted that consumers are now choosing spinel, alongside Montana sapphire, zircon and garnet, for engagement rings.
How to buy a red spinel
Per-carat logic governs spinel as it governs every coloured stone, and it is not linear. Price steps up at threshold weights — noticeably above 2 carats, sharply above 5 — because large clean crystals of fine colour are scarce. Work out what you are paying per carat, always, and compare like against like.
Colour carries the value. Saturation matters more than lightness, and a stone that holds its red under warm indoor light as well as daylight is worth a premium over one that goes brown or grey after sunset. Judge colour in the shade of open daylight, not under a spotlight, and in the southern hemisphere face a south-facing window.
The value pockets, at time of writing, are three. Lavender, lilac and grey spinel remain remarkably cheap for what they are. Ceylon and Vietnamese reds often deliver eighty per cent of a Burmese stone's colour at a considerably lower figure. And a slightly included stone of superb colour is nearly always a better buy than an eye-clean stone of mediocre colour — spinel's single refraction is forgiving of small inclusions in a way that faceted quartz is not.
The red flags are equally clear. Be wary of "balas ruby" or "ruby spinel" used to blur species. Be wary of "jedi" applied to anything merely pinkish. Be wary of any large, perfectly clean, intensely red stone offered without a report, and of a seller who cannot tell you which country the stone came from or who declines to put the answer in writing.
Three questions to ask any seller
- Is this natural spinel, and how was that determined? The answer should reference refractive index, single refraction, or a laboratory report — not simply "it came from a good source".
- Has it been heated or diffused in any way, and will you state that in writing? A confident no is fine. A vague answer is the problem.
- What is the price per carat, and what would the same colour cost one carat lighter? This exposes whether you are paying for the stone or for the size.
Beyond that, the ordinary advice holds, and it is the only advice we ever give about value: buy the stone you cannot stop looking at.
