Oval: the coloured-stone king
Ovals dominate fine sapphires for cold, practical reasons: they preserve the most weight from typical rough, they face up large for their carats, and their rounded brilliance flatters colour across the stone. When in doubt in coloured stones, oval is never wrong.
Cushion: the romantic
Pillow-soft corners with vintage soul — the shape of historic stones and heirloom-era designs. Cushions trade a little spread for a lot of charm and suit saturated stones beautifully.
Round: brilliance at a premium
Maximum sparkle, maximum rough wastage — which is why fine round sapphires cost noticeably more per carat. Worth it when fire is the brief.
Emerald cut: the honesty test

Pear and marquise: the flatterers

Cabochon: the phenomenon shape
No facets, pure dome — mandatory for star sapphires, moonstone and opal, and quietly fashionable again for saturated colour worn casually.
The colour rule of thumb
Deep, dark stones favour shallower, brilliant styles that lighten and enliven; pale stones favour deeper cuts that concentrate colour.
