Every sapphire in our vault began as something unpromising: aluminium and oxygen, cooking in the earth's crust. What turns that common recipe into one of the rarest treasures on the planet is time — hundreds of millions of years of it — plus heat, pressure and a trace of luck.
The recipe: corundum
Sapphire is corundum — crystalline aluminium oxide — the second-hardest natural material after diamond. Pure corundum is colourless. The magic comes from impurities measured in parts per million: iron and titanium together make blue; chromium makes pink (and, in quantity, makes ruby); iron alone leans green and yellow. One mineral, every colour of the sky — which is why the sapphire colour family is so gloriously wide.
Two birthplaces
Metamorphic sapphires — like most Ceylon stones — form where continental collisions cook aluminium-rich rock under immense pressure. Sri Lanka's treasure is a residue of the collision that built the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. These stones tend toward the prized softer, luminous blues and pastels.
Magmatic sapphires — like most Australian stones — hitch a ride to the surface in basalt volcanoes. Iron-rich chemistry gives Australia its signature deep blues, teals and parti stones — no two ever alike.
The gem gravels of Ceylon
Rivers do the first sorting. Over aeons, water frees crystals from their mother rock and concentrates the dense survivors in gravel beds — Sri Lanka's famous illam. This is where our own story starts: small pits and tunnels into ancient river beds, worked by hand as they have been for two thousand years.
