If sapphire is the aristocrat of coloured stones, tourmaline is the artist: no gem species paints across a wider palette, sometimes within a single crystal. It is also one of the smartest buys in coloured gems — serious beauty at approachable prices.
One name, every colour
Tourmaline's complex chemistry welcomes almost any colouring element, so the family runs from raspberry rubellite through forest greens, inky blues and golden honey tones — famously including watermelon tourmaline, pink-hearted with a green rind, sliced straight from the crystal.
Pink tourmaline: the approachable romantic
An October birthstone and the budget-friendly cousin to pink sapphire — softer in glow, larger for the money, and glorious in rose gold (our gold colour guide explains that pairing). Pink tourmaline earrings and charms are staples of our own jewellery collection.
Paraíba: the neon unicorn
Copper-bearing tourmaline from Brazil (and later Africa) glows an electric windex-blue that seems lit from within. True Paraíba commands sapphire-level prices and beyond — a reminder that 'affordable family' and 'record-breaking member' can coexist. Wearing and care
At 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale, tourmaline suits rings worn with light care and is carefree in earrings and pendants. Warm soapy water only — steam and ultrasonics can stress included stones. One quirk: tourmaline charges with static when warmed, attracting dust in shop windows. Historic jewellers called it the magnetic stone; we call it a stone that needs the occasional wipe.
Buying well
Judge colour first (vivid without going dark), then eye-cleanliness — pinks and greens are held to a higher clarity standard than rubellite. Ask about heat and irradiation treatments, which are common and should be disclosed like any other (see our treatments guide).
