What Is Boulder Opal, and Why Does the Ironstone Stay On?

Turn a boulder opal over. The back is rock — brown, banded ironstone — and the junction between rock and colour wanders like a coastline. Nothing was glued on: the stone came out of the ground in one piece and the cutter kept it that way. That decision governs the outline of every boulder opal, how bright its colour reads, how it is priced and how it should be set.

What boulder opal is

Strip the description back and boulder opal is simple: opal that grew in seams and pockets through Queensland ironstone, cut with the host rock still on it. The face is opal; the back is the rock the opal grew in. It is the opal type identified by what is still attached to it rather than by body tone alone, and it is the stone the Boulder Opal collection is built around.

How the opal got into the rock

Opal is hydrated silica: silica with water held inside it, commonly a few per cent and sometimes as much as twenty. It set from silica-bearing water in whatever space that water reached. In Queensland's boulder country those spaces were cracks and cavities running through iron-rich rock, so the opal took the shape of the void it filled — a thin sheet along a fracture, a rounded pocket inside a nodule.

Colour follows the same accident of geometry. Play-of-colour comes from light diffracting through a regular array of microscopic silica spheres, and the size of those spheres influences which colours appear. Where the spheres stacked regularly the stone plays colour; where they did not it stayed plain. Both often sit within a single boulder, side by side.

Why the cutter leaves the ironstone on

The colour bar is usually too thin to stand alone

A seam follows a crack, and cracks are narrow. The opal is frequently a layer thinner than a fingernail spread across a much larger piece of rock. Cut it free and there may be nothing left to hold, let alone set — and freeing it grinds away most of the colour bar to save what little survives. Leaving the ironstone on is often the only way the colour survives to be worn.

The dark host makes the colour read

Body tone — the darkness of the background behind the play-of-colour — is among the strongest influences on how vivid an opal looks. A pale background scatters light back through the colour and softens it; a dark one absorbs it and lets the flash read at full strength. In boulder opal that backdrop is the rock the opal grew against.

The rock gives the stone a body

Opal sits at about 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than quartz at 7, so everyday grit can scratch it. It has no cleavage but dislikes knocks and sudden temperature change. Ironstone is tougher, and gives the piece thickness and a durable edge for a setting to grip.

Solid, not a doublet

This is the distinction that matters most. A doublet is a thin slice of opal bonded to a separate dark backing; a triplet adds a clear cap. Neither is a fake and both are legitimate when disclosed, but they are worth less than solid stone, and prolonged immersion can work moisture into the bond.

Boulder opal is not an assembly. The opal and the ironstone were one piece of ground before the cutter ever saw them. That makes it a solid natural opal in the same sense as a black or crystal opal: priced as a solid, with no glue line for water to find.

On a receipt, the word to look for is solid. The physical test is the side profile rather than the face. A doublet usually shows a dead-straight, even join, because two flat surfaces were cemented together; a boulder opal's junction rises and falls with the old seam, and the back is usually contoured rather than ground flat. Because a doublet backing can itself be ironstone, the ruled line is the tell, not the material. Why no two share an outline

Because the opal follows the seam, the cutter works to the colour rather than to a template. Grinding a boulder opal to a calibrated oval would cut away the colour that runs off to one side, so outlines stay freeform: kidneys, teardrops, wandering ribbons, shapes with no name.

Three things follow. Boulder opal is sold by the piece as often as by the carat, because face size, shape and colour coverage matter more than a weight that includes host rock carrying no play-of-colour. Settings are made for the stone rather than stones chosen to suit a setting, which is why a boulder opal belongs in a made-to-order ring, not a stock mount. And close matches are difficult, which is why a well-matched pair of Australian opal earrings takes longer to assemble than a single stone.

Boulder opal and black opal

Both are solid Australian stones with dark backdrops. The difference is where the darkness comes from.

  • Black opal has a dark body tone in the opal itself, and comes principally from Lightning Ridge in New South Wales.
  • Boulder opal may have a thin, even transparent, colour bar; the darkness behind it belongs to the ironstone. It comes from Queensland.
  • Black opal is usually thick enough to cut as a rounded cabochon. Boulder opal is nearly always freeform, and often follows the natural contour of the seam.
  • A boulder opal's carat weight includes host rock, so carat-for-carat comparisons between the two mean very little.
  • Darker body tone is generally rarer, and fine black opal is the scarcer of the two.

How to wear it

The ironstone back is an advantage at the bench. It is tough, and thick enough for a jeweller to bezel the piece by gripping rock rather than clamping opal, while a rub-over bezel shields the vulnerable edge of the colour bar. Closed-back settings are the norm, since opaque ironstone admits no light from behind.

Pendants and earrings live an easier life than rings, which take the knocks. For a ring worn daily, insist on a protective setting and a low profile. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, never an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, and keep the piece away from sudden heat. Opal is Australia's national gemstone and a birthstone for October.
