Is white sapphire a good alternative to a diamond?
White sapphire is natural colourless corundum, hard at Mohs 9 and usually a fraction of the price of a diamond. Optically it is not a diamond substitute: sapphire has a lower refractive index and far less dispersion, so a white sapphire reads soft and watery rather than fiery, and dirt dulls it more visibly. For maximum brilliance, buy a diamond; for a natural, durable, understated white stone at a lower price, white sapphire earns its place.
How much does a yellow sapphire cost per carat?
In Australia, commercial yellow sapphire commonly sits near AUD 150 to 500 per carat, while well-cut Ceylon golden and canary stones run about AUD 800 to 2,500 per carat. Fine unheated material of strong saturation goes higher again. Colour saturation drives price first, then clarity, cut and size, and stones above three carats carry a premium per carat.
Are yellow sapphires heated or treated?
Most yellow sapphire on the market has been heated — a permanent, long-accepted treatment that lifts colour in pale corundum. Some yellow material is instead irradiated, which can fade in light, or lattice-diffused with beryllium, which is a cheaper product altogether. Why does my white sapphire look cloudy?
Cloudiness in a white sapphire is usually surface film rather than the stone itself. Sapphire is Mohs 9 and resists scratching, but hand cream, soap and skin oils build up beneath the setting and dull the light returning through it. Warm water, a mild detergent and a soft brush restore it. Haze that will not clean off points to fine internal silk, which grading should have disclosed at purchase.
