Heat an amethyst far enough and it turns yellow — most citrine on the market began life as amethyst, which shows how closely iron and temperature govern colour in quartz. Left alone, amethyst reads anywhere from pale lilac to deep purple, and any heating we know of is disclosed. At Mohs 7 it wears easily as a pendant, though years of strong sunlight will pale it. Assessed in Sydney by our FGAA-qualified gemmologist.
