Jardin, oil and origin — the whole truth about the connoisseur's stone.

Foreword: The Stone That Forgives Nothing
Anna, our FGAA-qualified gemmologist, on why the greenest thing in the showcase is also the least forgiving purchase in gemmology — and how this handbook will keep you on the right side of it.
Early in my career, a man brought me an emerald with no inclusions at all, and my heart sank. He was delighted with it. It was large, vividly green, perfectly clean, and it had cost him rather less than dinner for two. He wanted a valuation. What he received instead was an education: the stone was synthetic, grown in a laboratory in a matter of months, and worth a fraction of what he had paid. He had applied the rules of diamond buying — cleaner is better, clean and cheap is a bargain — to the one gem where those rules run backwards.
That afternoon is why this handbook exists.
I have spent my working life at the microscope, assessing every stone our family offers before it reaches a client. Sapphire, which fills our other volume, is an honest gem. It largely is what it appears to be, and its traps are few and well-marked. Emerald is different. Emerald punishes ignorance more thoroughly than any major gem I know, and it does so politely, beautifully, and years after the sale.
Three inversions you must accept before you spend a dollar
First: inclusions are normal. A fine emerald is expected to carry an interior — the trade calls it the jardin, the garden — and a clean face at a modest price should raise your pulse for the wrong reasons. In emerald, suspicious cleanliness is the red flag that suspicious colour is in other stones.
Second: oil is tradition. For centuries, emeralds have been bathed in oils and resins that seep into surface-reaching fissures and quiet them, letting the colour speak. This is not a scandal. Very nearly every natural emerald on the world market is enhanced to some degree, including stones we sell. The practice is legitimate for one reason only — because it is disclosed.
Third, and this is where fortunes turn: the degree of enhancement moves price by multiples. Two emeralds of matching colour, size and origin can sit an order of magnitude apart in value because one laboratory report reads "minor" and the other reads "significant". In no other gem does a single word on a document do so much work. The difference between minor and significant is, quite literally, the difference between an heirloom and a liability — because heavy enhancement is not only a price question but a stability question. Oil dries, clouds and weeps; a heavily treated stone is a stone on a maintenance schedule.
In emerald, the sin is never the oil; the sin is the silence.
Why the ground is moving under this stone
The laboratories themselves are tightening their language, which tells you how much pressure sits on these words. On 1 November 2025, Gübelin retired its "insignificant" clarity-enhancement grade for emeralds — the softest word on the scale, gone. More sobering still, in June 2026 SSEF warned the trade about emeralds that had been re-oiled after laboratory testing and then sold on the strength of the older, cleaner report. Read that twice. A genuine report from a great laboratory, describing a stone that no longer exists in that condition. If the world's most respected labs are issuing alerts about this, a private buyer cannot afford to be casual about it.
None of this should frighten you off the stone. It should simply persuade you to buy it the way professionals do — slowly, in writing, with the treatment named.
What you can do this week
You do not need my microscope to raise your standard immediately. Before you buy any emerald of consequence, ask three questions and insist on written answers. Is it enhanced, and with what — oil, or a modern resin? To what degree, in the words of an independent laboratory? And what is the date of that report — has the stone been repolished, re-oiled or reset since? A seller who answers plainly has told you something valuable about the stone. A seller who bristles has told you something more valuable about themselves.
And know where the money hides. Buyers overpay, in our experience, for size and for the word "Colombian" spoken aloud rather than certified. They save without regret on stones a shade outside the fashionable colour ideal, on honest gardens that do not touch the crown, and on emeralds whose enhancement is fully disclosed and priced accordingly — a stated "moderate" stone, bought knowingly, is a far better possession than a whispered "minor" one bought on faith.
The promise of this book
The chapters that follow will walk you through colour and why it outranks everything, the garden and how to read it, origin and what it is truly worth, the full ladder of enhancement from none to significant, laboratory reports and how to interrogate them, and the practical business of buying, setting and living with an emerald. We will state plainly things the trade prefers to leave vague, including where that candour costs sellers like us money. Our family has handled coloured stones across three generations, since the Ceylon gem fields of the 1960s, and if that history has taught us anything, it is that a knowledgeable client is not a threat. She is the whole point.
We will not promise you that an emerald is an investment. We will promise you something better: that by the final chapter you will be able to sit across from any seller, anywhere in the world, and ask the questions that separate an heirloom from a liability. Buy the stone you cannot stop looking at — but only once it has answered you honestly.

Colour: The Green That Matters
Emerald is bought with the eye and priced by the shade — learn to see hue, tone and saturation before you learn anything else.
Ask ten people to point at "emerald green" on a colour chart and most will choose a square too dark to buy. The green the trade actually pays for is brighter than the folklore — a living, slightly bluish green at medium tone, the colour of deep water over white sand rather than the colour of a pine forest at dusk. Learning to see that difference is the single most valuable skill in this handbook.
Gemmologists split colour into three parts, and it pays to keep them separate. Hue is the position on the wheel: emerald's ideal sits at green to bluish green. A whisper of blue is not a flaw; it is the classic emerald signature. A drift towards yellow, by contrast, cheapens the stone quickly to the eye. Tone is lightness or darkness. Saturation is intensity — how much green, as opposed to grey, the stone carries. Of the three, saturation does the most work. A medium-toned stone with strong saturation will outsell a darker stone with grey in it every day of the week.
What makes the green
Two elements colour emerald: chromium and vanadium. Chromium is the historic one — it colours the Colombian stones that set the world's expectations — and it tends to give a warm, vivid, almost fluorescent quality. Vanadium gives a green that can be every bit as fine. For a period last century, some laboratories refused vanadium-coloured beryl the name emerald at all; that argument is over, and the major labs now call both by the same word. We think that is right. On the hand, no honest observer can tell which element is at work; it takes a spectrometer. Buy the green, not the chemistry — and if a seller uses "chromium-coloured" as a selling point, understand it as a preference, not a grade.
The tone window
Emerald lives in a narrow band of tone, and both exits are expensive.
Too light, and the stone stops reading as emerald. It becomes green beryl — a pretty gem, but priced in a different universe, and no amount of clarity or size will pull it back. If you find yourself admiring a pale stone chiefly for its cleanness, pause: you may be paying emerald money for beryl colour.
Too dark, and the stone goes dead. Very dark emeralds can look magnificent under a dealer's lamp and then turn to black glass across a dinner table. This is where buyers overpay most reliably, because darkness photographs as richness and words like "deep" and "intense" do the selling. Our test is simple and we suggest you adopt it: carry the stone away from the bright light and look at it in a dim, warm room. A fine emerald still glows green there. A too-dark one does not.
Origins as tendencies, not rules
Colombian emeralds tend towards a warm, soft, slightly yellowish- to pure-green with a velvety glow. Zambian stones, coloured with iron alongside chromium, tend cooler and more bluish, often with better clarity. Brazilian emeralds range widely — many are lighter and lively, with real character at accessible prices.
Every word above is "tends". We have handled Zambian stones any dealer would have called Colombian face-up, and Colombian stones with a distinctly bluish cast. Origin describes a population, not your stone. This matters for your wallet: a laboratory origin report saying "Colombia" commands a substantial premium over an identical colour from Zambia. If you are buying beauty rather than provenance, an equal-colour Zambian stone is among the best-value decisions in emerald — a saving without regret. If you are paying the Colombian premium, be sure you are paying it for colour you can see, not for a word on paper.
Zoning, and how to look
Emerald colour often grows in zones — bands of stronger and weaker green laid down as the crystal formed. A skilled cutter orients the richest zone near the culet so the whole stone borrows its colour face-up. This is legitimate craft, not deception, but you should know what you own. Tilt the stone and watch: if the green drains away at a slight angle, or the stone looks green from the top and near-colourless through the side, the colour is riding on a thin zone, and the price should reflect it.
Judge colour face-up only — the way the stone will actually be seen — over a neutral white or grey surface, never on black velvet, which flatters everything. Use soft indirect daylight: in Sydney, where Anna assesses every stone we offer, that means a south-facing window; readers in the northern hemisphere should use a north-facing one. Then repeat the dim-room test. Ten minutes and two lights will tell you more than any adjective in a listing.
Why colour outranks clarity
In diamond, clarity is a ladder and everyone climbs it. In emerald, the ladder is turned on its side. The trade expects inclusions — the chapter on the jardin explains why — and forgives them almost entirely when the colour is right. The reverse is never true. A flawless emerald of weak, greyish or over-dark colour is a curiosity, not a treasure, and no laboratory report will rescue it.
In emerald, colour is the asset; clarity is only the condition report.
So allocate your budget the way the market does. Spend on saturation first, tone second, and let clarity absorb the compromise. The stones that hide value are the slightly bluish, medium-toned, strongly saturated ones passed over by buyers chasing either a Colombian name or a dark "important" look. The stones that hide loss are the inky and the pale. When in doubt, walk the stone to the window, then to the dim room, and trust what your eye keeps returning to. That is the green that matters.
- The ideal emerald is green to slightly bluish green at medium tone with strong saturation — saturation, not darkness, is what carries value.
- Chromium and vanadium both make true emerald; no eye can tell them apart, so buy the colour you see, not the chemistry on the report.
- Test every emerald in two lights: soft indirect daylight (a south-facing window in the southern hemisphere) and a dim warm room — a fine stone still glows in the second, an over-dark one goes dead.
- Colour outranks clarity absolutely: spend on saturation first and let clarity absorb the compromise, and consider equal-colour Zambian stones among the best-value savings in emerald.
Jardin: Clarity Rules, Inverted
Emerald is the one gemstone where a visible interior is expected, where perfection raises eyebrows rather than applause, and where knowing which inclusions matter is worth real money.
A newcomer to emeralds almost always reaches for the cleanest stone on the tray. Watch someone with thirty years in the trade and you will see the opposite: a slight narrowing of the eyes, a loupe raised not in admiration but in doubt. In most of the gem world, clarity is a simple ladder — cleaner is better, and the price climbs with each rung. Emerald is the room where the ladder stands upside down.
Type III honesty
Gemmologists sort gem species into clarity types according to how they grow. Aquamarine — emerald's own mineral cousin — routinely grows clean, so a clean aquamarine is unremarkable. Emerald is classified Type III: a stone that almost always carries eye-visible inclusions, because the geology that creates it is violent. Beryl becomes emerald only where chromium or vanadium is present, and those elements arrive in tectonically restless places — veins and schists that fracture and re-heal repeatedly while the crystal is still growing. The inclusions are not damage acquired later. They are the growth record. Expecting a sizeable emerald to be clean is expecting a century-old tree to have no rings.
Jardin: the fingerprint
The French trade named an emerald's interior its jardin — its garden — and the word is exact: wisps, veils, feathers and tiny crystals arranged in three dimensions like foliage. Two useful things follow. First, no two gardens repeat. Photographed under magnification, the jardin identifies your specific stone more reliably than any number printed on a certificate; if a stone ever leaves your possession for setting or repair, that photograph is your proof of return. Second, the garden is the strongest casual evidence of natural origin a layperson can read.
The finest thing a microscope will show you is a three-phase inclusion: a jagged little cavity holding liquid, a bubble of gas and a minute salt crystal, all sealed inside the stone since the day it formed. For decades these were read as Colombia's signature; laboratories are more careful now, since Zambian and Afghan stones can show them too, but they remain firm proof that the crystal grew in the earth, in mineral-rich fluid, over geological time. No factory schedules that.
Character or risk
Not all inclusions are equal, and this is where your attention pays. When Anna maps an emerald under the microscope in Sydney, her first question is never how much is inside the stone. It is where it sits, and what it touches.
Character: wispy veils and gardens suspended wholly within the body of the stone; small crystals; jardin gathered near the pavilion or beneath the crown facets, away from the centre of the table. These affect beauty only mildly and durability not at all.
Risk: fissures that reach the surface — above all at the corners of an emerald cut, where a setter's pressure concentrates. A surface-reaching fissure at a corner is a pre-scored line waiting for a jeweller's thumb, and it is also the doorway through which oil enters the stone, which matters greatly in the next chapter. Ask any seller two direct questions: do any fissures reach the surface, and where? A dealer who cannot or will not answer has, in effect, answered.
When clean is a question
A flawless-looking emerald does not invite delight; it invites questions.
Loupe-clean natural emeralds of good size and rich colour exist, but rarely, and their owners know precisely what they hold. So when a clean, vividly green stone appears at a friendly price, run the working hypotheses in order: synthetic; natural but heavily clarity-enhanced; or genuinely natural and clean — in which case the price would not be friendly. Synthetic emerald is real emerald in chemistry and entirely legitimate merchandise when sold as what it is — the value chapter covers synthetics, and the tightening rules on naming them, in detail. The sin, here as everywhere in this handbook, is silence.
The arm's-length standard
The trade's working standard for emerald is not loupe-clean but eye-clean at arm's length. Try it on any emerald you can get in front of. Hold the stone thirty to forty centimetres from your eye in soft indirect daylight — a south-facing window here in Sydney, north-facing if you read this in the northern hemisphere — and simply look. If the garden dissolves into colour at that distance, the stone passes, because this is how it will actually be seen for the rest of its life: on a hand, across a dinner table, never through a lens. Then bring it close and enjoy the garden on its own terms. Both views are the stone.
The garden and the cut
The rectangular step cut carries this stone's name because it was made for it. Long parallel facets behave like calm water, returning broad, unhurried flashes of green rather than the confetti sparkle of a brilliant. Inside those broad flashes, a moderate jardin reads as texture and depth. The same garden under a round brilliant's small facets is chopped up and multiplied, which is one reason heavily included emeralds are seldom cut as brilliants. The step cut also opens a wide, honest window — the table — which is why jardin directly beneath the table matters more than jardin anywhere else, and why the cut's corners are truncated at all: to armour the stone's most vulnerable points.
Where the money hides
Colour sets an emerald's price; clarity adjusts it. That structure creates the best value in this book. A stone with rich, saturated colour and a frank, well-placed garden costs a fraction of its unusually clean twin, and at conversational distance the two are close to identical. Buyers overpay when they hand over clean-stone money without asking why the stone is clean — the answer often lies in the oil chapter that follows. Save without regret by accepting a visible garden away from the table's centre. Never save by accepting a corner fissure, however tempting the number.
Buy the emerald whose garden you keep returning to. In this species, character is not the enemy of beauty. It is the proof of it.
- Emerald is a Type III stone: eye-visible inclusions are expected, and the working standard is eye-clean at arm's length, not clean under the loupe.
- Jardin held within the body of the stone is character and proof of natural origin; surface-reaching fissures — especially at the corners of an emerald cut — are risk. Always ask where they are.
- A loupe-clean emerald at a friendly price is a question, not a prize: consider synthetic or heavy clarity enhancement before good luck.
- Colour sets the price and clarity adjusts it, so the best value sits in richly coloured stones with a frank, well-placed garden — near-identical to their cleaner twins at conversational distance.
Oil and Enhancement: The Whole Truth
Cedar oil has kept emeralds beautiful for centuries — the only question that should ever trouble you is whether anyone told you it was there.
Somewhere in Bogotá or Jaipur this week, an emerald sits in warm cedarwood oil under gentle vacuum, its surface-reaching fissures slowly drinking in a liquid whose refractive index nearly matches the stone's own. When it emerges, the pale web of fractures that fogged its face will have all but vanished. In one sense nothing has been added; in another, everything has changed.
This is not a scandal. It is one of the oldest workshop practices in the coloured-stone trade, and the great majority of emeralds you will ever be shown — including fine ones, including expensive ones — have been through some version of it. The scandal, when there is one, lives elsewhere in this chapter.
A tradition measured in centuries
Emeralds fracture. The same geological violence that makes the colour also riddles most crystals with fissures that reach the surface, and a fissure filled with air scatters light and reads as a whitish veil. Fill it with an oil of similar refractive index and the light passes through as if the fissure were barely there. Cedarwood oil became the filler of tradition because it is close in optics, viscous enough to stay put, and natural enough to sit comfortably beside a natural stone. It is also reversible: oil dries out, weeps out in ultrasonic cleaners and hot displays, and can be cleaned and replaced. Think of it as conservation, the way a violin is re-varnished. An oiled emerald, disclosed as such, is an honest emerald.
Resins are a different conversation
The modern era added synthetic resins and polymers — fillers engineered to match emerald even more closely, and in some cases hardened in place. These do the optical job superbly, and they too are legitimate when disclosed. But they are not the same commitment. A hardened filler cannot simply be cleaned out and renewed; removing it can be difficult, and its long-term behaviour inside the stone is a shorter story than cedar oil's centuries. When you ask about enhancement, ask two questions, not one: how much, and what with. "Minor oil" and "minor resin" are different purchases. In our experience the trade rewards oil over hardened fillers at resale, and the gap widens as the stone gets finer.
The scale that moves money
Laboratories grade the degree of clarity enhancement on a ladder that runs, in substance, from none through insignificant and minor to moderate and significant. Understand this clearly: the ladder is not a quality scale for beauty. It measures how much help the stone has had. Two emeralds can look identical across a desk while sitting three rungs apart — and the price does not step politely between rungs, it multiplies. Each move from significant toward none can compound, because you are paying for what the stone is without assistance, and stones that need little assistance are rare in nature.
One wrinkle you must now carry with you: on 1 November 2025, Gübelin retired its "insignificant" grade for emerald clarity enhancement. The same stone, tested before and after that date, can carry differently worded reports from the same laboratory. Neither report is wrong. But if you are comparing two stones on paper, check the report dates before you compare the words, or you will punish one emerald for the calendar.
Read the date as carefully as the grade
In June 2026, SSEF published a warning that deserves a place in every buyer's memory: emeralds were being cleaned and re-oiled after laboratory testing, then sold with the earlier, gentler report still attached. The stone tested at "minor" walks out of the workshop carrying more oil than the paper admits, and the paper is technically genuine.
A laboratory report describes the stone on the day of testing — not the stone in front of you today.
The defence is simple and entirely within your power. For any serious purchase, ask when the report was issued, ask whether the stone has been cleaned, re-polished or re-oiled since, and get the answer in writing on the invoice. For an important stone, insist on a recent report — or make the sale conditional on fresh testing. A seller with nothing to hide will agree without flinching. Reluctance here is information.
What "no oil" costs, and who should pay it
An emerald graded with no clarity enhancement is a survivor: a crystal that came out of the ground clean enough to need nothing. Collectors chase these stones precisely because nature so rarely provides them, and they command premiums that can startle buyers used to sapphire pricing. Whether you should pay that premium depends on why you are buying. If the certificate is the point — if you want the rarity itself — the premium is the price of admission. If the beauty is the point, a fine emerald with minor oil, fully disclosed, is one of the best-value purchases in coloured stones, because you are buying almost all of the look for a fraction of the rarity. Where buyers overpay is the middle: paying a near-no-oil price for "minor" on an old report, without asking the questions above.
Our position
Every emerald we offer is assessed in Sydney by Anna, our FGAA-qualified gemmologist, and its enhancement stated plainly before a price is discussed. We hold to a simple rule, and we commend it to you as a test of any seller anywhere: oil is maintenance; silence is the fraud. A dealer who volunteers the treatment, the filler type and the report date before you ask is a dealer you can buy from. One who waits to be asked — ask harder. One who bristles — leave.
Practise the habit on stones you have no intention of buying. Ask three sellers, in person or by email, three questions: what enhancement, what filler, what report date. You will learn more about the emerald trade from the tone of the answers than from any chapter we could write.
- Oiling is a centuries-old, legitimate practice when disclosed; the enhancement grade — none, minor, moderate, significant — moves price by multiples, so always ask how much and what with.
- Hardened resins and polymers are not the same purchase as cedar oil: oil is reversible maintenance, hardened fillers are a permanent commitment the trade rewards less at resale.
- A report describes the stone on the day of testing — after SSEF's June 2026 warning about re-oiling post-testing, and Gübelin retiring 'insignificant' in November 2025, the report date matters as much as the grade.
- 'No oil' emeralds carry collector premiums because nature rarely provides them; pay that premium for the rarity itself, or buy a disclosed minor-oil stone and keep most of the beauty for far less.
Origin: Muzo to Kagem
One word on a laboratory report — Colombia — can multiply an emerald's price before anyone has actually looked at the stone; this chapter explains why, and when to refuse to pay for it.
At a gem fair, you can watch a dealer's posture change the moment a report reads "Colombia". The loupe comes out slower. The price arrives higher. The stone itself has not changed — the paperwork has. Understanding that gap between geography and beauty is among the most profitable lessons in emerald buying.
Colombia: the name that moves money
Colombian emeralds come principally from three historic districts north of Bogotá: Muzo, Chivor and Coscuez. Muzo is the storied one — its finest stones show a warm, saturated green with a faint golden undertone and a velvety softness that collectors describe in hushed terms. Chivor tends cooler and slightly bluish; Coscuez sits between them and is the least predictable of the three. The geology is unusual: Colombian emeralds grew in sedimentary black shale rather than the mica schists that host most of the world's supply, and that difference leaves fingerprints in the stone — jagged three-phase inclusions, a particular trace-element chemistry — that laboratories read when they issue an origin opinion.
Muzo also produces the trade's great curiosity: the trapiche emerald, in which dark carbonaceous material grows in six spokes radiating from a central core, like a cartwheel caught in green glass. Trapiches are cut as cabochons, priced on the crispness of the pattern rather than the usual clarity logic, and bought for love. Treat them as a fascinating side-room, not the main gallery.
Zambia: the modern connoisseur's source
The Kafubu district of Zambia — anchored by Kagem, the largest emerald mine in the world — is where much of the world's fine emerald comes from today. Iron in the crystal gives Zambian stones a cooler, bluish-green colour, often deeper and more consistent than Colombian material, and the crystals frequently arrive cleaner from the ground. A fine Zambian in good light is not a substitute for a Colombian. It is a different, fully legitimate expression of the species — and because it lacks the magic word on the report, it trades well below Colombian goods of equivalent beauty. That gap is where a careful buyer shops. When we assess emeralds in Sydney, Zambian stones are routinely the ones that stop us mid-sentence.
Brazil, Panjshir, Ethiopia
Brazil — Itabira, Nova Era and neighbouring fields — supplies steady commercial goods and the occasional fine stone, typically lighter and sometimes slightly greyish; it is a sensible hunting ground for larger sizes on a fixed budget. Afghanistan's Panjshir Valley produces small quantities of vivid, saturated emerald that can genuinely rival Colombian colour — and, awkwardly for the labs, can resemble Colombian stones internally as well. Ethiopia's Shakiso deposit, worked seriously only since the mid-2010s, is the newest arrival: variable, occasionally excellent, still finding its price level. Emerging origins reward buyers who judge with their eyes rather than the atlas.
What an origin call actually is
Here is the part the trade rarely says plainly: origin is an opinion, not a measurement. A laboratory examines the inclusion scene under magnification, runs trace-element chemistry, compares the results against its reference collection, and states the most likely geographic source. Good labs are right most of the time. They are not right all of the time, they occasionally disagree with one another on the same stone, and the word "opinion" appears on the report for a reason. The old shortcut — three-phase inclusions mean Colombia — has been dead for years, because Zambian and Afghan stones can show them too. So an origin call from a major laboratory is worth having on an important stone. It is not worth treating as gospel, and it is never worth more than the stone it describes.
Origin is an opinion about geography; beauty is a fact sitting in your hand.
The name-tax, and how not to pay it
The premium for the word "Colombia" on otherwise comparable stones is real and large — in our experience it is often the single biggest line item in an emerald's price after the treatment grade. Sometimes it is worth paying: a top Muzo stone with that warm velvet green is genuinely rare, and rarity is legitimately expensive. But the premium applies to mediocre Colombian stones too, and that is the trap. A dull, heavily included, heavily oiled Colombian still carries the name; a vivid, lightly enhanced Zambian still lacks it.
So do this before you buy anything. First, ask every seller two questions: which laboratory issued the origin opinion, and what the treatment grade is — the two lines on the report that move price by multiples. Second, ask to see a Zambian and a Colombian of similar size and quality side by side in daylight, and decide with the reports face-down which one you cannot stop looking at. Third, if your budget is fixed, spend it in this order: colour, then treatment grade, then cut, then origin. The name comes last because it is the only one of the four you cannot see.
The rule we repeat to every client holds: a fine Zambian beats a mediocre Colombian every time, at a fraction of the price. Buy the stone. Let other people buy the word.
- Origin is a laboratory opinion inferred from inclusions and trace chemistry — usually right, occasionally contested, and printed as an 'opinion' for a reason.
- The 'Colombia' name carries a large premium that attaches to mediocre stones as well as great ones; Zambian goods of equal beauty trade well below them.

Value and the Checklist
Why the greenest stone beats the cleanest, what the paperwork is worth in multiples, and the ten questions that separate a considered purchase from an expensive lesson.
An experienced dealer pricing a parcel of emeralds keeps returning to one stone, and it is rarely the cleanest. It is the greenest — the one whose colour stays saturated as it rolls away from the light. Everything about emerald pricing flows from that habit.
How an emerald's price is built
Colour comes first, and it is not close. A vivid, slightly bluish green of medium tone, spread evenly across the face of the stone, commands multiples of a paler or yellower green of identical weight and clarity. If you remember one rule, make it this: in emerald you are buying colour, and everything else is a discount or a premium applied to it.
The enhancement grade comes second, and here emerald behaves like no other gem. Two stones of identical colour can differ in price by multiples depending on the words a laboratory writes about their fissures: no clarity enhancement, minor, moderate, significant. Those words are worth real money, which is why the major labs guard them carefully — Gübelin went as far as retiring its "insignificant" clarity-enhancement grade for emeralds on 1 November 2025. When a single adjective moves the price this far, the report that carries it is not an accessory.
In emerald, the laboratory report is not paperwork about the stone; it is a component of the price.
Origin comes third. A Colombian origin opinion from a respected laboratory carries a premium over comparable Zambian or Brazilian material — deserved or not, the market pays it. Never pay a Colombian premium on a seller's word alone.
Clarity, within type, is a distant consideration. A jardin of fine inclusions in a vividly coloured stone barely dents its value; a clean but pale stone is worth far less. Prices also step upward at the whole-carat marks — as a rule of thumb, a 1.90 ct stone costs meaningfully less per carat than a 2.10 ct of the same quality. This is where a careful buyer saves without regret: buy colour over clarity, buy just under the carat step, and consider fine Zambian stones, which deliver serious colour without the Colombian surcharge.
The cut that tells you what the stone fears
The emerald cut — rectangular, step-faceted, corners clipped — was not designed for sparkle. It was designed for survival: the clipped corners armour a brittle stone's most vulnerable points, and the long step facets show colour in broad, even sheets, as the jardin chapter explains. For pricing purposes, one habit matters. When you see an emerald in a brilliant cut, ask why the cutter chose sparkle over colour. Sometimes there is a good answer. Often the answer is that the colour needed the help.
The honest synthetic
Synthetic emeralds — flux-grown by houses such as Chatham, and hydrothermal material from several producers — are real emerald in chemistry and crystal structure, grown in months rather than over geological ages. Disclosed and priced accordingly, they are entirely legitimate: superb colour at a small fraction of the natural price, well suited to jewellery that will work hard. They also cannot hide from a laboratory. Flux stones betray themselves with wispy, veil-like flux inclusions and the occasional platinum platelet shed by the crucible; hydrothermal stones show chevron-like growth zoning and traces of their seed plate; trace-element chemistry settles any remaining doubt. The language is tightening too: from September 2026, CIBJO's Blue Books permit only the word "synthetic" for man-made stones — no more soft euphemisms. The sin, as ever, is not the product. It is the silence.
Ten questions for any emerald seller
Ask them all. A good dealer will enjoy answering; a poor one will teach you something by flinching.
- Is this stone natural or synthetic?
- Has it been clarity-enhanced — and with what: oil, resin, a hardened filler?
- What is the enhancement grade, and which laboratory says so?
- How recent is the report? SSEF warned in June 2026 about emeralds re-oiled after testing and sold on the older, cleaner report.
- Does the stone in my hand match the report's weight, measurements and photograph?
- What is your origin opinion, and is it backed by a laboratory?
- What is the price per carat, so I can compare it fairly?
- May I view the stone dry, in soft daylight? (A south-facing window in Australia; north-facing in the northern hemisphere.)
- What is your return period, and is it long enough for independent testing?
- Will you put every one of these answers in writing on the invoice?
Red flags
Walk away, without apology, from: stones offered wet or glistening with fresh oil, which flatters fissures for exactly as long as it takes you to get home; "minor oil" claimed with no report to say so — that grade belongs to a laboratory, not a sales pitch; a loupe-clean natural emerald at a bargain price, a combination nature almost never produces honestly; and, in tourist markets, dyed quench-crackled quartz — pale quartz deliberately fractured and soaked in green dye, whose colour sits in a spidery web of cracks rather than in the stone itself. A loupe exposes it in seconds.

Buy the stone you cannot stop looking at, with the answers in writing.

Living with Emerald
An emerald will outlive you comfortably, provided you learn the three or four habits it quietly insists upon.
The ultrasonic cleaner is a small tank that hums on nearly every jeweller's bench in the country, and it has ended more emeralds than any pavement ever has. The stone goes in looking a little tired and comes out with a fissure that was invisible now running white across the table. Nothing dramatic happened. The tank simply did what it does: it drove vibration into a crystal whose character is defined by its internal landscape. Living well with an emerald begins with understanding that its enemies are not the ones you would guess.
The engagement-ring conversation
We are asked, more than for any other stone, whether an emerald can be an engagement ring. The honest answer is yes, with two conditions attached.
Emerald sits at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, which measures resistance to scratching. On that count it is a perfectly serviceable ring stone; ordinary dust will not abrade it the way it slowly frosts a garnet. But hardness is not toughness. Emerald is brittle, and its jardin — the garden of internal features that gives the stone its character — can double as a map of where a sharp knock might travel. A blow that a sapphire would shrug off can chip an emerald's girdle or open a fissure.
So: condition one is the setting. Ask for a bezel, a half-bezel, or a substantial halo that stands proud of the girdle. Avoid high, exposed claw settings and avoid a thin girdle left naked at knuckle height. A protective mount in 18ct gold or platinum costs a little more at the bench and is the cheapest insurance the stone will ever have. Condition two is the owner. An emerald ring comes off for the gym, the garden, the washing-up and the beach. If that ritual sounds like a burden, choose a sapphire and wear the emerald at your throat or your ears, where life is gentler.
Cleaning, and the two machines to refuse
Never the ultrasonic. Never the steamer. Both can propagate fractures, and both can draw the oil out of surface-reaching fissures, leaving the stone abruptly paler and milkier than the one you bought. If a jeweller reaches for either tank with your emerald, stop them; a good bench will thank you for saying so.
The correct method takes three minutes. Lukewarm water, a drop of mild dishwashing liquid, a soft brush — a baby's toothbrush is ideal — a gentle pass behind the stone where skin oils collect, a rinse in clean lukewarm water, and a pat dry with a soft cloth. No solvents, no jewellery dips, no acetone, no prolonged soaking. That is the entire regime, and done monthly it keeps an emerald looking as it should.
Re-oiling is servicing, not scandal
Most emeralds are oiled, and oil is not permanent. Over years — faster with hot water, solvents and hard wear — it can dry or leach, and the stone slowly goes hazy as fissures re-emerge. The remedy is re-oiling: cleaning the old oil out and replacing it. Done by a competent gem house or lapidary, it is routine maintenance, no more sinister than servicing a mechanical watch. In our experience most worn emeralds want attention on the order of every five to ten years; a stone kept in a safe may never need it.
Treat re-oiling as you treat servicing a watch: routine, unremarkable, and always written down.
The writing-down matters more than it sounds. Keep a simple file for the stone — receipt, laboratory report, valuation — and add a dated line every time it is re-oiled, noting who did it and with what. This is not bureaucracy; it is honesty made portable. Recall the SSEF warning covered in the enhancement chapter — emeralds re-oiled after testing, sold on the older report. A report describes the stone on the day it was tested, nothing later. If your emerald is re-oiled and you ever intend to sell or bequeath it, have it re-tested or disclose the treatment on your record. The sin, as everywhere in this book, is silence.
Paper: insurance and valuation
Insure the emerald specifically, not under a vague contents blanket. Ask a qualified valuer — in Australia, look for NCJV registration — for a replacement valuation that records the treatment grade from the laboratory report, because two emeralds of identical face-up beauty can differ in value by multiples on that line alone. An insurer who does not know the grade cannot replace like with like. Update the valuation every few years; the cost is trivial against the quiet loss of being underinsured for a decade. Photograph the stone well, front and side, and keep the images with the file.
Storing
Emeralds scratch each other and are scratched by sapphires and diamonds, so each piece gets its own soft pouch or its own compartment. Keep it away from sustained heat — not on a sunny windowsill, not above a heater — because heat is what dries oil. Extremely dry storage does the same work more slowly, so a safe is fine, but look at the stone once or twice a year rather than entombing it. An emerald you check on is an emerald you catch early.
The heirloom case
Here is the quiet argument for all this care. An emerald is not fragile; it is particular, and particular things reward routine. A stone that is cleaned gently, re-oiled competently, insured accurately and stored sensibly does not wear out. It arrives at your granddaughter's hand looking much as it looked at yours, carrying a folder that tells her exactly what it is, what has been done to it, and by whom. That folder is part of the inheritance. When Anna assesses an old emerald in Sydney, the ones with a paper trail are the ones whose story we can vouch for — and the ones whose owners clearly loved them properly.
- Emerald suits an engagement ring only with a protective setting (bezel, half-bezel or proud halo) and an owner willing to take it off for rough work.
- Never clean an emerald in an ultrasonic or steam machine; lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush are the entire regime.
- Re-oiling is routine maintenance, like servicing a watch — have it done competently, and record every service in the stone's file, since a lab report only describes the stone as it was on testing day.
- Insure the stone specifically, with a valuation that records its treatment grade, and store each piece separately, away from heat.
