The people who see every gemstone on earth spend their own money on stones the public has barely heard of — this book is the map to that shelf.

Watch a gem dealer's hands, not his tray. The last time I sat across a trading table in Ratnapura, the man opposite me spent an hour showing me sapphires — and wore, on his own finger, a grey spinel. His wife, he mentioned, wears a zircon the colour of sea glass. Neither stone was for sale.

I have been looking at dealers' hands ever since, in Colombo, in Bangkok, at the Sydney trade counters where our own family has done business across three generations. The pattern holds. The people who handle rubies all day wear spinel. The people who grade sapphires for a living go home to tourmaline. The garnet clan — tsavorite, spessartine, the colour-change stones — turns up on the fingers of cutters who could have kept anything from the wheel.

This is not eccentricity. It is the purest market signal I know. A dealer buying for herself pays with her own money, judges with her own eyes, and answers to nobody's advertising. When that person consistently chooses spinel over ruby, she is telling you something the retail counter never will.

Why you have never heard of these stones

The famous gems — ruby, sapphire, emerald — earned their fame honestly, over centuries. But fame has a carrying cost, and you are the one who carries it. A meaningful part of what you pay for a famous name is the name.

The unfamous stones never had a marketing campaign. No engagement-ring tradition, no film franchise, no slogan. What they have instead is merit: spinel with a fire and cleanness that ruby often cannot match at any sane price; zircon with a brilliance approaching diamond; garnets in colours the "big three" simply do not come in; tourmaline in more colours than any other gem species.

Meanwhile the classics grow genuinely scarce at the top. When the trade's own pricing bible recently had to shrink its chart for unenhanced Burmese ruby because the goods could no longer be found — a story told in full in the spinel chapter — it confirmed what dealers' fingers had been saying for years. The trade moved to the alternatives first because the trade saw the shortage first.

The stones in this book are not substitutes for the famous gems; they are what the famous gems' own dealers chose instead.

Where the money logic sits

Be clear-eyed about what this means for your wallet, because it cuts both ways.

Where value hides: in species without name recognition, you are paying almost entirely for the stone — its colour, cut, clarity and rarity — and almost nothing for its reputation. A fine red spinel delivers a ruby-adjacent experience for a fraction of ruby money. That gap is not a flaw in the market. It is the opportunity.

Where buyers overpay: the moment an unfamous stone acquires a famous origin story or a fashionable trade name, the name-premium machinery starts up again. You will meet this pattern repeatedly in the chapters ahead, and we will name it each time.

Where candour matters: every species in this book has its treatments, and we will tell you what they are, which ones are routine, and which ones should reprice a stone. Treatments are legitimate when disclosed; the sin is silence. That rule does not bend for stones we happen to sell.

How to use this guide

Each chapter takes one species or clan and gives you the same working equipment: what the stone actually is, which colours the trade fights over, what treatments exist and how disclosure should read, and where the price traps and the quiet bargains sit. You do not need to read in order. If a violet spinel has already caught your eye, go straight to its chapter.

Three habits will serve you through every page:

Judge colour in honest light. Soft indirect daylight, away from spotlights. In the southern hemisphere that means a south-facing window; in the northern, a north-facing one. Every stone we assess in Sydney is judged this way before anything else.

Ask the treatment question every time, in writing. "Is this stone treated in any way, and will you state that on the invoice?" A good seller answers in one breath. A hesitation is itself an answer.

Do one thing this week: ask a jeweller — any jeweller — to show you a red spinel beside a ruby of similar size, and say nothing while you look. That single comparison will teach you more than any paragraph of mine, and it costs nothing.

A note on who we are, kept brief because this is a handbook and not a brochure. Ministry of Gems is a family gem house with three generations in the Ceylon gem fields reaching back to the 1960s. We mine, cut and polish our own stones, and I assess every one of them in Sydney before it is offered. That vantage point — seeing stones before the market has dressed them up — is the vantage point this book tries to lend you.

Spinel: The Stone That Wore the Crown

The red stone at the front of the British Imperial State Crown is not a ruby — and the story of how nobody noticed for five centuries is the best argument for the gem the trade quietly buys for itself.

At the front of the Imperial State Crown, mounted directly above the 317 ct Cullinan II diamond, sits a polished red stone roughly the size of a plum. The English have called it the Black Prince's Ruby since the fourteenth century. It has been worn at coronations, carried at Agincourt, and hidden during a civil war. It is not a ruby. It is a spinel. So is the Timur Ruby, a great crimson pebble engraved with the names of the Mughal emperors who owned it. The finest gem judges of several empires handled both stones for hundreds of years and never doubted them.

That is not a story about ignorance. It is a story about how good spinel is. The misidentification was a compliment, and it still is.

Why the eye is fooled

Spinel is singly refractive. Light entering the stone travels as one ray, not two, so its colour arrives as a single, undivided voice — no doubling, no directional shift, none of the slight optical blur that doubly refractive stones can carry. Ruby and sapphire split light in two and blend the result. Spinel does not. In a fine red spinel the colour simply sits there, open-faced and complete, which is why it reads so cleanly across a room.

Add the practical virtues. Spinel is Mohs 8 — comfortably an everyday ring stone, harder than emerald, garnet or tourmaline. And it is the standing exception in a treated world: the great majority of spinel on the market is sold exactly as it came out of the ground. We will state the caveat plainly, because candour is the point of this handbook: low-temperature heating of some spinel does exist and laboratories can detect it, and cobalt-diffused blue spinel — a treated stone, sometimes offered as natural — circulates at the cheap end. So even here, ask the question and get the answer in writing. The honest answer, far more often than for any corundum, will be "none."

For five centuries spinel was good enough to fool an empire; it is certainly good enough for your left hand.

The colours worth knowing

Flame red. The classic. The best Burmese reds from Mogok stand next to ruby without apology; some carry a fluorescent glow that seems lit from inside. Hot pink. Tanzania's Mahenge district produces neon pinks of almost implausible saturation — the colour that made the design world look up in the late 2000s. Cobalt blue. The rarest chapter: blue spinel coloured by traces of cobalt, historically from Vietnam's Luc Yen and occasionally from Sri Lanka's own gravels. Genuine examples are scarce and prices have risen sharply in recent years. Grey and lavender. The quiet revelation. Soft dove-greys, smoky mauves and lilac-greys — many from Sri Lanka and Burma — have become the contemporary jeweller's favourite neutral, and they remain sensibly priced.

Where it comes from

Four names matter. Mogok in Burma, source of the great reds. Kuh-i-Lal in Tajikistan's Badakhshan mountains — almost certainly the origin of the crown stones themselves, mined since antiquity. Mahenge and Morogoro in Tanzania, the modern engine of the pinks. And Sri Lanka, where spinel tumbles out of the very same alluvial gravels as sapphire. When our miners wash a day's gravel from our own Ceylon workings, spinel is what comes up alongside the corundum — the same rivers, the same geology, sorted on the same table. Every spinel we offer passes across the Sydney desk of Anna, our FGAA-qualified gemmologist, before it is priced.

The money conversation

Here is the plain arithmetic of the red end of the market. Unheated Burmese ruby has become so scarce that GemGuide, the trade's pricing reference, cut its unenhanced Burmese ruby chart from ten quality grades to four in its July/August 2026 issue — there were simply not enough findable goods to price (Roskin Gem News Report, 19 June 2026). As that ceiling recedes, red spinel is where the red goes. A top red spinel still costs a fraction of a comparable unheated ruby, for a stone that is untreated, durable and — to the unaided eye — pouring out the same colour.

Where value hides: the greys and lavenders, which deliver enormous style per dollar; and reds and pinks in the 2–3 ct range, below the size thresholds where prices step up steeply. Where buyers overpay: the word "cobalt." It is applied loosely to any strong blue spinel, and the premium for the genuine article is large. Pay a cobalt price only for a stone with a laboratory report naming cobalt as the cause of colour. The same discipline applies to "Jedi" and "Mahenge" as sales words — buy the saturation in front of you, not the nickname.

Buying it well

Three things you can do this week. First, look at any red or pink spinel in soft indirect daylight — a south-facing window here in Sydney, north-facing for northern-hemisphere readers — and decide whether the colour leans crimson, orange or pink; spinel is honest about its lean, and you should buy the one you prefer rather than the one labelled "ruby-like." Second, insist on eye-cleanliness; fine spinel is typically crisp, so cloudiness is a discount, not a charm. Third, ask two questions in writing: has this stone been treated in any way, and what is the origin claim based on? For anything sold as cobalt blue, add the third: show me the report.

Spinel asked nothing of history except to be looked at, and on that basis it wore the crown. Judge it the same way. If you cannot stop looking at it, that is the whole case.

Zircon: More Fire Than Diamond

The oldest crystal on Earth has spent fifty years being mistaken for a laboratory imitation — and the mix-up has kept one of gemmology's great performers absurdly affordable.

Tilt a well-cut white zircon under a single downlight and it answers with flashes of red, orange and green that a diamond of the same size would be pressed to match. Then tell someone what it is, and watch the name do its damage. So let us be plain at the outset: zircon is not cubic zirconia. Zircon is a natural mineral, zirconium silicate, sieved from gem gravels for two thousand years; crystals from the Jack Hills of Western Australia have been dated to more than four billion years, the oldest Earth-formed material yet dated. Cubic zirconia is a synthetic diamond imitation, grown in laboratories since the 1970s. The two share a syllable and nothing else. That accident of naming has kept an exceptional gemstone unfairly cheap — bad news for zircon, and quietly good news for you.

Zircon has spent half a century paying for another stone's name.

What the fire looks like

Fire is dispersion made visible: white light fanned into its colours as it passes through the stone. Zircon's dispersion is a shade below diamond's on paper, yet in practice its visible fire can rival and even exceed it, for a reason worth understanding. Zircon is strongly doubly refractive — every ray of light entering the stone is split in two — so each internal reflection is doubled, and the flashes multiply. Add a lustre bright enough that old dealers called colourless stones "Matura diamonds", and you have a gem that out-sparkles most things on the tray. Put one beside a diamond under a halogen light this week if you can arrange it. The comparison is the lesson.

The tell

That same double refraction gives you a test anyone can perform. Take a 10x loupe, look down through the table, and focus on the facet edges of the pavilion below. In zircon they appear doubled — fine tramlines where a diamond or a CZ shows a single crisp line, because both of those are singly refractive and can never double. Ten seconds with a loupe settles a hundred years of confusion.

The colours, and the heat

Nearly all blue zircon begins as reddish-brown material from Ratanakiri province in Cambodia, heated in oxygen-starved conditions to the electric, slightly greenish blue the market loves. This heating is routine, traditional and legitimate — and it should be disclosed every single time. Assume any blue zircon is heated unless a laboratory report says otherwise; a seller who volunteers this before you ask is a seller to keep. One practical note from experience: a small proportion of heated blues can drift back towards brown after long, direct sun exposure, so display it on a hand, not a windowsill. Beyond blue, the palette runs to honey, sherry and cognac browns — Sri Lanka and Tanzania supply the best — plus autumn greens and warm colourless stones. Judge a blue by soft indirect daylight: a south-facing window here in Sydney, north-facing for northern-hemisphere readers.

High, intermediate and low

Zircon carries traces of uranium and thorium in its lattice, and over geological time that internal radiation slowly disorders the crystal from within. Fully crystalline stones are called high zircon; heavily disordered, almost glassy ones are low zircon, with intermediate stones between. Low zircons — typically murky green, softer, less brilliant — are collector curiosities. Virtually everything cut for jewellery is high type, with the intact structure that delivers the full optical performance. And to answer the question directly, because candour is our habit: the radiation in question acted inside the stone across millions of years and poses no hazard whatever to the wearer. It damaged the crystal, not you.

Wearing it well

Zircon's weakness is not softness but brittleness. At around 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale it resists scratching well enough, yet its facet edges chip and abrade with careless knocks — dealers call old stones rubbed dull in parcel papers "paper worn", which tells you how little it takes. So set and store accordingly. For a ring, choose a bezel or a protective halo rather than exposed claws, and treat it as an occasion ring, not a gym companion. Earrings and pendants, which lead sheltered lives, are ideal homes and need no such caution. Store the piece in its own pouch; a zircon jumbled in a jewellery box loses its edges to its neighbours.

Where the value hides

Speaking as people who have handled these stones across three generations of Ceylon gravel — zircon comes out of the very pits that yield sapphire, and every one we offer crosses Anna's desk in Sydney first — this is, carat for carat, the most fire per dollar available in a natural gemstone. Blues command the top of the range, and large, clean blues carry real premiums. The savings without regret sit in the honey, sherry and cognac stones: a fraction of blue prices, and the fire reads even more vividly against a warm body colour. Where buyers overpay is on cut. A big zircon with a shallow, windowed pavilion is a dead stone at any price; a slightly smaller, precisely cut one will out-perform it every evening of its life. Buy the cut, then the colour, then the carats — and if what you want is old-world diamond sparkle with a story, a white zircon in a vintage-style setting is one of the most honest pleasures in this book.

The Garnet Clan: Far Beyond January Red

One name, a dozen colours, and almost nothing to hide — why the garnet family may be the most honest value in coloured stones.

In 1967, a Scottish-born geologist named Campbell Bridges was prospecting in north-eastern Tanzania when he came across a green stone so vivid he first took it for emerald. It was a grossular garnet, coloured by vanadium and chromium. He traced the deposit across the border into Kenya, near Tsavo National Park, and by 1974 Tiffany & Co. had given the stone a name: tsavorite. Half a century later, most people who wear a garnet still think it means dark January red.

That misunderstanding is your opportunity. Garnet is not a stone; it is a clan — a family of related mineral species that blend into one another, spanning raspberry, mandarin, chrome green, mint, purple and colours that change with the light. And the clan shares one standing virtue almost nothing else in the trade can claim.

Nature's honesty by default

Garnets are essentially never treated. No heat, no oil, no filling, no diffusion. What you see in the stone is what came out of the ground. In a market where the first question about any ruby, sapphire or emerald must be "what has been done to it?", that is a quiet luxury: with garnet, the question mostly answers itself.

We say "mostly" because candour cuts both ways. The clan's one asterisk is demantoid, where some material is gently heated to improve colour. It remains uncommon, but it exists, and a seller who tells you a garnet cannot be treated by definition is overstating the case. Ask anyway. The habit costs nothing.

Garnet is the one family where nature's disclosure form arrives already filled in.

Meeting the family

Rhodolite is the gateway — a natural blend of pyrope and almandine in raspberry to grape-purple tones. Good rhodolite is clean, lively and remarkably affordable for its beauty. The trap is darkness: much material sold as rhodolite is over-dark almandine that reads near-black indoors. Judge it in soft indirect daylight — in the southern hemisphere, a south-facing window — and reject any stone that goes to ink when you cup your hand over it.

Spessartine is the clan's fire. The finest is a pure, saturated mandarin orange, famously from Namibia and Nigeria, now largely from East Africa. Slightly brownish or reddish stones cost far less and can still be handsome; the pure "Fanta" orange commands the premium. Small spessartines are plentiful; clean, vivid stones above a few carats are genuinely scarce.

Tsavorite is the clan's aristocrat: an emerald-green that needs no oil. At Mohs 7 to 7.5 it wears well, its high refractive index gives it a brilliance emerald rarely matches, and it is usually eye-clean — three ways it outperforms the stone it resembles. Its constraint is size. Tsavorite rough rarely survives large; clean stones above 2 ct are rare, and prices climb steeply past that mark. In our experience a fine 1.50 ct tsavorite delivers most of the visual drama of a 2.50 ct stone at a fraction of the cost. This is where to save without regret.

Demantoid, the andradite garnet, has dispersion higher than diamond — tilt one under a lamp and it throws confetti. Russian stones from the Urals may show "horsetail" inclusions, fine radiating fibres that collectors actively prize: an inclusion that raises the price. Namibian and Malagasy demantoid, usually horsetail-free and less expensive, offers the same green fire. Demantoid is the softest of the clan, nearer 6.5 — a ring stone for occasions, not for the gym.

Colour-change garnets, mostly pyrope-spessartine blends from East Africa and Madagascar, shift from greenish or blue-grey in daylight to purplish red under warm light. The best rival alexandrite's behaviour at a fraction of its price. Insist on seeing the change yourself under both light sources before you pay for it.

Mint (Merelani) grossular from the hills of northern Tanzania is tsavorite's cool-toned cousin — a pale, luminous green with a glow all its own. Because it is judged as a pastel rather than a saturated stone, it costs far less than tsavorite while photographing, frankly, beautifully.

Africa's engine room

Almost everything above flows from one geological arc: the East African gem belt through Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and Mozambique, with Namibia and Nigeria supplying the orange chapter. The mines are mostly small-scale and the supply is genuinely erratic — which is why a colour you admire today may simply not be available next season. When Anna assesses garnets in Sydney, origin matters less than it does for sapphire; with garnet, the stone's own face is nearly the whole story.

Where the money hides

A rough map of the clan's value tiers, cheapest to dearest: almandine and common pyrope; rhodolite and mint grossular; colour-change stones and fine spessartine; tsavorite; fine demantoid at the top. Buyers overpay in two predictable places: dark red stones sold with romantic names, and tsavorite just over the 2 ct line, where the price step is steepest. Value hides in rhodolite bought critically for tone, in mint grossular, in 1–2 ct tsavorite, and in horsetail-free demantoid from the newer sources.

This week, do one thing: take any garnet you own to a window and really look at it in daylight, then under a warm lamp. If it stays alive in both, the clan has already taught you its first lesson — and you have bought, or will buy, with your own eyes.

Tourmaline: The Colour Engine

One mineral family, every colour the eye can register — and a copper-bearing corner of it that rewrote the price list of the entire coloured-stone world.

Slice a watermelon tourmaline across its growth axis and you are reading the crystal's autobiography: a pink core, a thin pale band, a green rind. The chemistry of the pocket changed while the crystal grew, and the crystal wrote it down. No other gem species keeps records like this, and none runs the palette so wide. Tourmaline arrives in every colour you can name, and in several the trade had to invent names for.

The reason is structural generosity. Tourmaline is a complex boron silicate whose lattice accepts almost any metal drifting through the pocket. Manganese gives pink, iron gives green and blue, chromium and vanadium give a green that argues with emerald, and copper gives something nobody was prepared for. One family, one engine, every colour.

The named colours

Three varieties earned their own names, and each has its own trap.

Rubellite is the red-to-raspberry pink end. The name should only be used when the red holds under incandescent light; many pinks go muddy under a warm globe, and a stone that survives the lamp test is the one to pay for. Rubellite is also the most included of the family — fine reds are nearly always visibly included, so an eye-clean stone at a modest price deserves suspicion, not celebration.

Indicolite is the blue. Iron makes it, and iron also darkens it: most indicolite is cut deep and reads navy-to-black indoors. The stone worth hunting is the open, lively blue that stays blue in soft indirect daylight — for us in Sydney that means a south-facing window; northern-hemisphere readers should face north. A clean, genuinely open indicolite over 2 ct is a quietly rare thing.

Chrome tourmaline, mostly from East Africa, is coloured by chromium and vanadium — the same elements that colour emerald — and at its best it has that same lit-from-within green. It rarely comes large; above 3 ct it becomes a specialist's stone. Ask specifically for "chrome" — ordinary iron-green tourmaline is a different, flatter animal, and the price difference is real.

One family habit worth knowing: many green tourmalines are nearly opaque down the length of the crystal — cutters call the axis "closed" — so orientation decides everything. Tilt the stone; if one direction goes to black, the cutter was fighting the rough, and the face-up colour is the compromise you are buying.

Two colours in one stone

Bi-colour and parti-colour tourmalines carry the growth story into the finished gem — pink shading to green, blue to mint, sometimes three zones in one emerald cut. Judge them on two things: how clean the stone is at the colour junction, where fractures tend to gather, and whether each zone is a colour you would want on its own. A crisp pink-and-green bi-colour with character costs a fraction of what either colour would cost pure and saturated, which makes these the best conversation-per-dollar stones in this book.

The copper chapter

In the late 1980s, diggings in Brazil's Paraíba state produced small, battered crystals in blues and greens that seemed to glow with their own current — copper and manganese doing something no gem had done before. The material was scarce from the first day, prices climbed to levels no tourmaline had approached, and then, from the early 2000s, copper-bearing tourmaline surfaced in Mozambique and Nigeria.

That is where the nomenclature fight begins. The major laboratories broadly treat "Paraíba" as a variety name for copper-bearing tourmaline of that colour, whatever the country, while offering an origin opinion alongside; purists insist the name belongs to Brazil alone. Our position is practical: the word on the report matters less than the two facts under it. First, origin — Brazilian stones command a substantial premium, and if you are paying a Brazilian price the report must say Brazil. Second, saturation — a top Mozambique stone with real neon outshines a weak Brazilian one, and glow should be bought with the eyes, not the atlas. If a seller says "Paraíba" and goes vague when you ask "Brazil, or paraíba-type?", the vagueness is the answer.

Tourmaline will make any colour you ask for; the market only prices a few of them.

Treatments, stated plainly

Heat is routine across the family: it lightens over-dark blues and greens, and nearly all copper-bearing material is heated to reach the famous neon — assume it unless a report states otherwise. Irradiation is used to create or deepen some pinks and reds; the result is generally stable, but it must be disclosed. And clarity-enhanced rubellite exists — fracture-filled stones whose apparent clarity is cosmetic. When a rubellite crosses Anna's desk in Sydney, the microscope goes to the fractures before anything else. None of these treatments is a sin. The sin, as always, is silence: a heated stone disclosed is honest goods at an honest price; the same stone undisclosed is a lie with facets. Ask the question of every seller, including us.

Living with it, and where the value hides

At Mohs 7 to 7.5 with no troublesome cleavage, tourmaline is a genuine everyday stone — rings included — though a filled or heavily included rubellite should stay out of the ultrasonic, and any tourmaline should stay away from the jeweller's torch. A curiosity you can test at home: a warm tourmaline attracts dust, a pyroelectric party trick eighteenth-century merchants used to pull ash from pipes.

Where does the money go furthest? Chrome tourmaline delivers emerald's green at a fraction of emerald's price. Clean, open indicolite rewards the patient hunter. Bi-colours buy character nobody else at the table will have. And unheated copper-bearing stones with laboratory reports sit at the summit — beautiful, but never a promise of profit. Our standing advice does not change for this family: buy the stone you cannot stop looking at, in the colour the engine made just once.

The Blue Shelf and the Quiet Achievers

Aquamarine, topaz, tanzanite, peridot and the phenomenal stones — where honesty about treatment and wear decides whether a bargain is a bargain.

Hold an aquamarine up to a soft window — south-facing, if you are reading this in Sydney as we are — and the first thing you should see is nothing. No veils, no needles, no frost. Just cool blue water and light passing through it undisturbed. That expectation of emptiness is the whole key to this shelf. The blue stones and the quiet achievers are judged by different rules from ruby and emerald, and knowing which rule applies to which stone is worth more than any price guide.

Aquamarine: the beryl that must be clean

Aquamarine is beryl, the same mineral as emerald, yet the clarity standard flips entirely. In emerald, an included stone is normal; the garden is part of the deal. In aquamarine it is not. The material grows in large, clean crystals, so clean stones are plentiful — which means inclusions are not forgiven here. An aquamarine with visible inclusions should be priced well below a clean one, and if it is not, walk on.

On treatment: nearly all aquamarine is gently heated to remove a greenish tinge and settle the blue. The heat is low, the result is stable and permanent, and the practice is so routine that untreated stones carry little premium. We disclose it anyway; disclosure is the habit, not the exception. On value: colour saturation does the work. Most aquamarine is pale, and pale is cheap. A stone with real depth of blue in daylight — not just under a jeweller's lamp — is the one worth paying up for. Test it near the window, not under the counter lights.

Blue topaz, and the cousin that actually is rare

Here is the plain truth the trade rarely puts on the ticket: virtually all blue topaz began life colourless, was irradiated, then heated, to produce the Swiss and London blues you see everywhere. The colour is stable and the material is treated safely and released under regulatory control. It is a legitimate, honest product — priced as the commodity it is. Where buyers overpay is simple: paying gem-rarity prices for treated blue topaz because the colour is vivid. Vividness here is manufactured and abundant. Enjoy it, wear it hard (topaz is durable at Mohs 8, though a sharp knock on its cleavage plane can split it), but pay commodity money.

The genuinely rare cousin is precious topaz — the golden-orange to pinkish material the trade calls imperial. It comes chiefly from one district in Brazil, it is not the product of a treatment production line, and it is priced accordingly. If you want a topaz worth collecting, this is the one.

On this shelf, rarity and colour are two different purchases — know which one you are making.

Tanzanite: one hill, worn gently

Every tanzanite on earth comes from a few square kilometres near Merelani in Tanzania. One hill, one source, no second act. That is a real scarcity story, and it needs no embellishment. Two honesty points, both of which we state on every stone. First, treatment: tanzanite comes out of the ground mostly brownish, and routine heating develops the violet-blue. The result is stable; an unheated blue tanzanite is a rarity, not the norm. Second, wear: at Mohs 6 to 7 with distinct cleavage, tanzanite is an occasional-wear stone. In a pendant or earrings it will outlive you. In an everyday engagement ring it will scratch, abrade and eventually chip, whatever the retailer's showroom lighting suggested.

Value hides in saturation. Pale lavender tanzanite is plentiful and inexpensive; deeply saturated violet-blue, holding its colour in a stone under 5 ct, is the hard thing to find. Size flatters tanzanite — big stones look saturated because the light path is long — so a small stone with genuine depth of colour is the sharper buy than a big pale one.

Peridot: two personalities

Peridot is one species with two characters. San Carlos material from Arizona runs small, bright and yellowish-green — cheerful, affordable, the birthstone counter's workhorse. The material from the Pakistan–Afghanistan borderlands, loosely called Himalayan, comes in larger, cleaner crystals with a purer, grassier green and commands real money in fine sizes. Peridot is one of the few gems that is essentially never treated — what you see is what grew. Care note: it is sensitive to acid and to jewellers' pickling solutions, so mention the stone before any bench work is done on its setting.

The phenomenal shelf, briefly

These stones are bought for an optical event, not a colour, so judge the event itself.

Moonstone. Adularescence — the billow of blue or white light that drifts as the stone moves. Blue sheen on a colourless body is the prize. Untreated. Soft and cleavable; rings need protective settings, pendants are safer.

Labradorite. A flash of colour — blue, gold, sometimes full spectral fire — that appears and vanishes with the viewing angle. Buy the stone whose flash covers the whole face, not one corner. Untreated. Tougher than moonstone but still not for daily knocks.

Star stones. A six-rayed star in sapphire or ruby, cut as a cabochon. Legs should be straight, centred and visible under a single light source such as the sun or a torch — a star that only appears under four showcase spotlights is a weak star. Beware diffusion-treated and synthetic stars; ask the question and get the answer in writing.

Cat's eyes. Chrysoberyl is the aristocrat here — a sharp, milk-and-honey eye that opens and closes as the stone turns. Quartz and tourmaline cat's eyes are honest, far cheaper substitutes; they should be sold under their own names. Chrysoberyl at Mohs 8.5 wears beautifully; quartz less so.

Building the Eye: The Collector's Checklist

How to train your eye, what to assume about treatment before anyone says a word, and the ten questions that separate a considered purchase from a hopeful one.

Sit beside a working dealer as he sorts a parcel and you will notice something: he never studies one stone. He tips out twenty, rakes them into a line with his tweezers, and pulls the best three in seconds. He is not judging spinels against some ideal in his head. He is judging spinels against spinels. That is the whole secret, and it is available to anyone.

Comparison is the teacher

The eye learns by contrast, not by contemplation. One stone on a pad tells you almost nothing; two stones side by side tell you which is more saturated, which holds its colour at arm's length, which goes grey when the sun goes in. So never assess a stone alone. Ask to see it beside another of the same species — even a lesser one. The lesser stone is doing you a favour: it shows you what the better one is doing right.

Change one variable at a time, the way a scientist would. Same lighting, two stones. Same stone, two lightings — under the shop's halogens, then near soft indirect daylight (a south-facing window here in the southern hemisphere; north-facing if you are reading this in London). Same stone, two distances — loupe range and across-the-room range, because a ring lives at across-the-room range. A stone that only performs under a spotlight is a stone that only performs in the shop.

And keep notes. A small book, a line per stone: species, weight, colour in your own words, what light it was under, what it cost or what was asked. Six months of this and you will have something no course can sell you — a private price-and-quality map, calibrated to your own eye. Buy small and honest before you buy large. A clean 1 ct spinel bought with full understanding teaches more than a 5 ct stone bought on faith, and the tuition is cheaper.

What to assume before anyone speaks

Here is the discipline that protects you: assume the standard treatment until a laboratory says otherwise. This is not cynicism. Most treatment is legitimate, stable and disclosed by honest sellers. The sin is silence — so remove the silence yourself by walking in with the assumptions already set.

Assume heated: sapphire and ruby. Assume oiled: emerald, essentially always. Assume irradiated: blue topaz, which is a treated stone by definition in the trade. Assume heated: tanzanite (nearly universal and undetectable), blue zircon, and aquamarine (routinely heated from greenish material, and undetectable after the fact). For these species, "untreated" is a claim that needs paper, not a default that needs disproving.

Then there is the honest-by-default shelf, and it is where this book has spent most of its pages: spinel, the entire garnet clan, peridot, and most tourmaline are sold as nature made them, because no routine treatment improves them. (The exceptions are narrow: some pink and red tourmaline is irradiated, copper-bearing Paraíba-type material is often heated, and a treated blue spinel exists — ask.) When you buy from this shelf, what you see is what the earth did. That certainty is part of what you are paying for, and it is priced remarkably cheaply.

Ten questions for any seller

  • Is this stone treated in any way, and how do you know?
  • If heated or oiled — is that stated on the invoice? (It should be, in writing, unprompted.)
  • Where is the stone from, and is that origin opinion or documented?
  • Is there a laboratory report, and from which laboratory?
  • May I see it in daylight, away from your display lighting?
  • May I see it next to a comparable stone?
  • What are the exact millimetre dimensions, not just the weight?
  • Does it show any colour shift between daylight and indoor light?
  • What is your return period if an independent laboratory disagrees with your description?
  • If I send this for a report at my own cost, will you honour the result?

An honest dealer answers all ten without flinching. Questions nine and ten are the real test: they cost a truthful seller nothing.

You cannot buy an eye — you can only train one, and it never wears out.

Red flags, and when the report is worth it

Across every species, the same warnings recur. A price dramatically below your notebook's map. "No treatment" claimed verbally but absent from the invoice. Origin stories that grow more romantic as you hesitate. Reluctance to let a stone leave the shop lighting. A photograph that cannot be matched to the stone in your hand. And with emerald, one more, learned recently and expensively by the trade: SSEF warned in June 2026 about emeralds re-oiled after laboratory testing and sold with the older report still attached — so check that a report's date sits close to the sale, not years behind it.

When is a laboratory report worth its fee on a modest stone? Our rule of thumb: whenever the claim being made is worth more than the fee. "No-heat" on a sapphire, "unoiled" on an emerald, "cobalt" on a blue spinel, "Paraíba-type" on any tourmaline — each of those words can double a price, so each deserves independent paper even at 1 ct. A garnet or peridot bought as nothing more than itself rarely needs one; there is no claim to verify.

The closing charge

Everything in this book points one direction. The famous stones are priced by fame; the alternatives are priced by fashion, and fashion is inattentive. Nature, meanwhile, made spinel as durable as it made anything, gave garnet colours corundum cannot reach, and put fire in zircon that diamond graders would envy. Knowledge pays best exactly where attention is thinnest. Train the eye, keep the notebook, ask the ten questions — and buy the stone you cannot stop looking at. That last instruction is the only one we will never let you skip.
