Foreword: The King Stone and the Fine Print
Anna, our FGAA-qualified gemmologist, on why ruby commands the highest prices in the coloured world — and why no other stone demands you read the label so carefully.
A few months ago a client sat across from me in Sydney with her grandmother's ruby ring. The stone was a warm, convincing red. Under the microscope it took me less than a minute to find the tell-tale blue flashes and the gas bubbles trapped in glass: a lead-glass composite, a stone that is part corundum and part filler, worth a tiny fraction of what the family believed. Nobody in that chain had lied, exactly. Somebody, decades or years back, had simply said nothing.
That silence is the reason this handbook exists.
The king stone
Ruby has been called the king of gems for centuries, and the market still treats it that way. Fine unheated rubies of good colour carry the highest per-carat prices of any coloured stone — above emerald, above sapphire, above almost everything except the rarest coloured diamonds. And the supply of the finest material has grown so thin that the trade's own reference tools are straining to describe it. GemGuide, the pricing guide dealers themselves rely on, cut its chart for unenhanced Burmese ruby from ten quality grades to four in its July/August 2026 issue — not because demand fell, but because there were no longer enough findable stones to price across ten grades.
When the top of a market becomes that scarce, pressure builds all the way down. Every seller wants their stone to borrow a little of that glow. And ruby, more than any other species we handle, offers sellers the tools to do it quietly.
The fine print
Here is the uncomfortable truth at the centre of this book: ruby is the most treatment-layered category in the coloured stone trade. Not because ruby people are dishonest, but because the treatments work so well, cost so little, and hide so easily inside a beautiful red stone.
The word "ruby" on a receipt can describe three fundamentally different things. It can mean a natural stone, perhaps given the standard heat treatment the trade has used for generations — legitimate, stable, and honest when disclosed. It can mean a fractured stone whose breaks have been healed with a flux at high temperature, leaving glass-like residue inside the gem. Or it can mean a composite: heavily fractured low-grade corundum infused with lead glass, a manufactured product that can be damaged by a jeweller's torch, by acid, even by lemon juice. These are not three grades of the same thing. They belong to three different price universes, and the chapters that follow will teach you to tell them apart — what each treatment is, what it does to durability, what a laboratory report actually says about it, and roughly where each sits on the ladder of value.
In ruby, the fine print is not attached to the price. The fine print is the price.
If you take one habit from this foreword, take this one, and use it this week if you are shopping: never accept the word "ruby" on its own. Ask, in writing, "Is this stone treated, and how?" A trustworthy seller will answer in one plain sentence. A vague answer — "it's natural", "all rubies are heated", "it has a certificate" — is not an answer. And note what the question costs you: nothing. The stones it saves you from are the expensive ones.

We are a Sri Lankan family house, three generations in the Ceylon gem fields since the 1960s, and sapphire is our first language. But we buy, cut and sell rubies too, and every ruby we offer crosses my desk in Sydney before it is offered to you. The rules in this book are the rules I apply to our own stock. Some of them cost us money. We state them anyway, because the alternative is the ring at the start of this foreword.
The promise
So here is the promise, plainly. Treatments are not the enemy; most of the world's rubies are treated, and a disclosed treatment at a treated price is a fair bargain. The enemy is silence — the composite sold as "natural ruby", the flux-healed stone priced as if it were merely heated, the report waved but never read. We will name every treatment, tell you what it should do to the price, and never pretend our own inventory is exempt from the same scrutiny.
Read this book before you spend anything. Lend it to the friend who is about to. And when you do finally stand in front of a red stone — anywhere in the world — buy the one you cannot stop looking at, at a price that matches what it truly is. That is the whole game. Everything that follows is simply how to play it well.

Colour: What 'Pigeon Blood' Actually Means
Red is not one thing — it is three variables, a glow, and a boundary dispute, and understanding all five is worth more than any phrase on a certificate.
Take a fine Burmese ruby into a dark room and pass a UV lamp over it. It does something almost no other gemstone will do: it lights up from within, a hot ember-red that seems to come from inside the crystal rather than off its surface. That trick — fluorescence — is half the secret of the most famous rubies ever sold. The other half is ordinary, learnable colour theory. This chapter teaches both.
Red, taken apart
Gemmologists describe colour with three variables, and rubies reward you for keeping them separate.
Hue is the position on the colour wheel: pure red, or red leaning towards purple, orange, or pink. Tone is lightness versus darkness — a scale running from watery pale to nearly black. Saturation is intensity: how much red is actually present, as opposed to grey or brown deadening it.
The prized combination is a red hue with at most a whisper of secondary colour, medium to medium-dark tone, and vivid saturation. Too dark and the stone reads garnet-like indoors, where most jewellery lives. Too light and it drifts towards pink sapphire — a boundary we will come to, because it moves price more than any other single judgement in the coloured trade.
When you next assess a ruby, say the three words out loud and answer each in turn. What is the hue, honestly — pure red, or purplish? Is the tone dark enough to go flat under a restaurant's downlights? Is the saturation vivid, or is there a brownish veil over it? Three separate questions produce a far more reliable verdict than one impression of "nice red".
The glow
Now the ember. Rubies are coloured by chromium, and chromium does something extra: under ultraviolet light — including the UV component of ordinary daylight — it fluoresces red. In stones with low iron content, this fluorescence is strong enough to add visible red light to the colour you see. The stone is, quite literally, emitting red as well as reflecting it.
Classic Burmese (Mogok) material is the textbook case: low iron, strong fluorescence, and that famous sense that the stone is lit from inside, especially outdoors. Higher-iron rubies — much Thai and some East African material — have their fluorescence partly quenched, and can look comparatively still, even when the body colour is respectable. Mozambique, the modern market's workhorse origin, spans the range: its finest stones fluoresce strongly and stand comparison with anything.
This is why viewing a ruby only under a jeweller's halogen spotlight is a trap. Strong warm lighting flatters every ruby. Fluorescence shows itself honestly in daylight. Always ask to take the stone towards a window.
'Pigeon blood' is an opinion, not a grade
Here is the part the trade tends to mumble. "Pigeon blood" — historically attached to the finest Burmese red — is now issued as a colour comment by several major laboratories. But there is no international standard behind it. Each laboratory holds the term to its own house definition: its own master stones, its own thresholds for hue, tone, saturation and fluorescence, and in some cases its own rules about which origins or treatments qualify. Two reputable labs can examine the same ruby and disagree, and CIBJO — the international jewellery confederation — has long urged caution over exactly this kind of unstandardised trade name. The words on the report are a considered opinion, not a universal grade.
The practical consequence is simple. A dealer asking a premium for the phrase is selling you paper. The premium belongs to the colour itself — which you can see — and to the report's origin and treatment findings, which are the laboratory's real work.
Never pay for the phrase; pay for the colour the phrase is trying to describe.
If two stones show you the same red in the same lights, and only one report says pigeon blood, the difference in their prices should be small. If it is large, you have found where this market hides its overcharging.
Secondary hues, and how they trade
Almost every ruby carries a secondary hue, and each one trades differently.
Purplish is the most forgivable — and the most common in fine unheated material. A slightly purplish red can look magnificent, and it typically costs meaningfully less than the same stone judged "pure" red. Set in yellow gold, which cancels a little of the purple to the eye, it is where we most often steer value-minded buyers. Orangey red divides opinion; at its best it is fiery and alive, at its worst it drifts brownish, and it generally trades below purplish material of equal quality. Pinkish is the dangerous one — not because it is ugly, but because it sits on the trapdoor.
The trapdoor: ruby or pink sapphire?
Ruby and pink sapphire are the same mineral. The dividing line is a judgement about tone and saturation — is this red, or merely pink? — and no instrument makes it. Laboratories draw the line by house convention, and conventions differ; the historic American habit drew "ruby" narrowly, while much of the trade draws it wider. A stone near the boundary can be a ruby on one report and a pink sapphire on another, with a dramatic difference in what it fetches.
Our advice runs in both directions. Buying a boundary stone as a ruby, at ruby money, is risky: you are paying for a word that a second laboratory might decline to repeat. Buying that same stone as a fine pink sapphire, priced as one, can be a quiet triumph — the colour does not know what the paper calls it. Viewing discipline
Judge every serious ruby under at least three lights: soft indirect daylight (in the southern hemisphere that is a south-facing window; north-facing in the north), ordinary warm indoor lighting, and the seller's spotlights last — never first. Daylight reveals fluorescence and true hue; domestic lighting shows how the stone will actually live; spotlights show only its best evening dress. Give your eyes a minute to adjust at each station, view against a neutral grey or white background, and look at the stone at arm's length as well as close up. The colour that survives all three lights is the colour you own.
- Assess red as three separate variables — hue, tone, saturation — asked as three separate questions, not one impression of 'nice red'.
- The legendary Burmese glow is UV-stimulated red fluorescence from chromium in low-iron material; it shows honestly in daylight, so never judge a ruby only under shop spotlights.
- 'Pigeon blood' is each laboratory's house opinion, not an international grade — pay for the colour you can see, never a premium for the phrase alone.
- The ruby/pink-sapphire line is a judgement call that moves price enormously: risky to buy a boundary stone at ruby money, shrewd to buy the same colour priced as pink sapphire.
Origin: Mogok, Mozambique and the Middle
A single word on a laboratory report can multiply the price of a ruby — here is what that word actually means, and when it is worth paying for.
The word "Burma" on a laboratory report can multiply the price of a ruby before anyone has looked at the stone. No other origin line in the coloured-stone trade carries that kind of money. Which is precisely why it deserves the coldest look you can give it.
Mogok and the weight of a name
The Mogok Stone Tract, in the hills north of Mandalay, has produced rubies for centuries. Its geology is unusually kind: marble-hosted, low in iron, so the chromium that colours the stone is free to fluoresce. A fine Mogok ruby glows red under daylight's ultraviolet component — the colour seems lit from within. This is the material that built the legend, the great named stones, and the term "pigeon blood".
The legend is real. The supply is not. Fine unheated Burmese rubies have become genuinely hard to find in the open market — hard enough that the trade's own price guide has had to thin its grading columns for want of findable goods, a story Chapter 5 tells in full.
Scarcity of that order does two things. It drives record prices for the genuinely fine stones. And it invites abuse: mediocre Burmese material, over-heated or heavily included, riding a famous name past buyers who are paying for the word rather than the stone.
Montepuez: the modern engine
In 2009, ruby was found near Montepuez in northern Mozambique — the most significant ruby discovery of the modern era. We will say this plainly, because it is true and some of the trade still mumbles it: the best Mozambique material rivals the historic sources. The finest stones are amphibole-hosted rather than marble-hosted, yet low enough in iron to fluoresce well, and they come with something Mogok cannot currently offer — availability in clean qualities and meaningful sizes, with a traceable route to market.
This is where value hides in today's ruby market. A top Mozambique stone delivers the colour, the glow and the clarity of the classical ideal at a fraction of the Burmese price, purely because the report says a different country. If you are buying beauty rather than a passport, this is the aisle to walk down first.
The middle of the map
Thai and Cambodian rubies — Chanthaburi, Pailin — carried the world's supply through much of the twentieth century. Their basalt-hosted geology is iron-rich, which quenches fluorescence: the stones run darker, with a flatter, garnet-like red. Honest material, often honestly priced, but it will not glow. Sri Lanka, our own home ground, produces rubies that lean pinkish; many "Ceylon rubies" sit close to the border where ruby ends and pink sapphire begins, and pricing should acknowledge which side of the line a stone truly occupies. Madagascar, and Tanzania's Winza and Longido deposits, have all produced superb individual stones, but supply is irregular; judge each stone on its merits, because the origin name carries little premium either way.
Sanctions, and saying so
Since the military coup of 2021, Myanmar's gem sector has operated under a regime widely accused of funding itself through gem revenues. Several Western governments, the United States most prominently, restrict the import of Burmese rubies. We state this neutrally: some buyers avoid Burmese goods on principle; others distinguish stones that left Myanmar decades ago from newly mined material. Both positions are defensible. What is not defensible is a seller who cannot tell you when and how a Burmese stone entered the market. Ask. A stone with a genuine old provenance has paperwork and a story that holds together; a shrug is an answer too.
Origin is an opinion
No laboratory watched your ruby come out of the ground. Origin is inferred — from inclusion scenes, growth structures and trace-element chemistry — and the honest laboratories print the word "opinion" on the report for exactly that reason. The fields overlap. Marble-type deposits resemble one another; two respected laboratories can, and occasionally do, reach different conclusions on the same stone.
Origin describes where a ruby was born; it says nothing about whether it is beautiful.
The practical consequences are simple. Where a large premium rests on the origin line, insist on a report from a major laboratory, and treat a stone whose price depends entirely on that single word as a stone that can afford a second opinion. And never let origin do the work your own eyes should do: an origin report is silent on cut, on windowing, on whether the colour dies indoors.
The buyer's rule
Here is the rule we apply on our own buying trips, and it will save you more money than any other sentence in this chapter: a fine Mozambique ruby beats a mediocre Burmese one at half the money. The trade prices the word; the eye prices the stone. When Anna assesses a ruby in Sydney, the report goes face-down first and the stone goes to the window — soft indirect daylight, which here in the southern hemisphere means a south-facing window (north-facing for our northern-hemisphere readers). If a stone needs its paperwork face-up to look expensive, it isn't.
So the next time you are comparing rubies: put the reports aside, view the candidates side by side in the same daylight, and choose the one you cannot stop looking at. Then — and only then — turn the reports over and let origin adjust the price, not the choice.

The Treatment Ladder: Heat, Flux and Glass
Heat improves a ruby, flux repairs one, and lead glass manufactures one — this is the chapter that teaches you to tell the label from the stone.
The call usually comes from a bench jeweller. A routine repair — a worn claw retipped, thirty seconds under the torch — and the ruby in the centre of the ring has turned milky, its surface crazed like old porcelain. The stone did not fail because the jeweller was careless. It failed because most of it was never ruby. It was a lattice of heavily fractured corundum held together by lead glass, and the torch simply melted the glass.
That ring sits at the bottom of what we call the treatment ladder. Every ruby you will ever be offered stands on one of its rungs, and the rungs do not merely differ in quality. They differ in kind.
The first rung: standard heat
Heating ruby in a furnace is old, accepted and close to universal. High temperature dissolves the fine rutile silk inside the stone, clears the haze and deepens the red. Nothing foreign remains; the stone is still corundum through and through, and the change is permanent and stable. A heated ruby survives the bench torch, the ultrasonic and a lifetime of wear exactly as an unheated one does.
Our working rule is blunt: assume any ruby is heated unless a respected laboratory says otherwise. A fine heated ruby, disclosed as such, is a legitimate gem at a fair price — and for most budgets it is the sensible place to buy. The disclosure, not the heat, is the point.
The second rung: flux-healed fissures
From the 1990s, vast quantities of fractured material — much of it from Mong Hsu in Myanmar — were heated packed in borax flux. The flux melts the walls of open fissures and lets the corundum partially re-crystallise across them: the fracture genuinely heals, but glassy flux residue stays behind in the healed channels. Laboratories grade the amount as minor, moderate or significant, usually in the comments section of the report.
Flux-healed ruby is durable and honest trade goods when disclosed. But it belongs a step below clean-heated stone of the same face-up quality, and this is where careful buyers quietly overpay: they see "heated" on a report, stop reading, and pay heated-only money for a stone whose comments note significant residues. Read the comments. Always read the comments.
The hard line: lead-glass composite
Below the ladder's second rung there is a gap, and then there is something else. Take corundum so fractured it is nearly opaque — material once left on the sorting-house floor — and flood it under heat and vacuum with high-lead-content glass. The glass fills the fracture network, light passes through, and the piece faces up as a glowing transparent red. Glass can make up a substantial share of the object by volume. This material is produced industrially and traded by the tonne.
It is also fragile in ways no true gem is. A jeweller's torch melts the glass. Jeweller's pickle etches it. Lemon juice, over time, dulls it. An ultrasonic clean can open its fractures. Major laboratories describe it as "composite ruby" or a manufactured product, and it is properly worth a small fraction of even a modest genuine ruby. There is nothing wrong with owning one at costume-jewellery money, knowingly. The wrong is the phrase "treated ruby" on a receipt, at hundreds or thousands of dollars, with none of this said aloud.
The rungs of the ladder do not share a price universe, and a stone on the wrong rung is not a bargain — it is a mislabel.
Reading the tell-tales
Composites betray themselves to anyone with a 10x loupe and patience. Buy a triplet loupe and practise three checks. First, rock the stone slowly under a strong point of light: filled fractures flash an unnatural blue (sometimes orange) as the light catches the glass — fine cracks of colour that sweep across the stone. Second, look inside for gas bubbles, often flattened, trapped in the glass; natural ruby does not contain bubbles. Third, examine the surface lustre on a facet: where glass meets corundum, the polish takes differently, giving a faint crazed or dimpled look. Any one of these is reason to walk away or demand a laboratory report before another word is spoken.
A brief note on diffusion: colour can also be cooked into a shallow skin of the stone from outside. It is less widespread in ruby than in sapphire, but it exists, a repolish can remove the colour, and it is another reason the laboratory report — not the seller's adjective — is the document of record.
Where the money is
At the top of the ladder stands unheated fine ruby, and it has become the rarest of all mainstream coloured stones. This is not sales talk; it is now structural. As Chapter 5 details, the trade's own pricing guide has had to collapse its unheated Burmese grades for want of findable stones. Scarcity has stopped being a marketing claim.
So spend accordingly. Save without regret on a well-cut, well-heated ruby, or on a disclosed flux-healed stone bought at the discount its report comments justify. Pay no-heat prices only against a report from a major laboratory that says no indications of heating. And never let a composite near real money, a bench torch or a lemon. Every ruby we offer is examined in Sydney by Anna, our FGAA-qualified gemmologist, before it is listed, and anything of consequence carries independent laboratory work — because in this category, the paper and the stone must be sold together or not at all.
- Assume every ruby is heated unless a major laboratory says otherwise; standard heat is stable, accepted and fairly priced — disclosure is what matters.
- Flux-healed rubies are legitimate when disclosed but belong a price step below clean-heated stones; the residue grade lives in the report comments, so read them.
- Lead-glass composite 'ruby' is a fragile manufactured product traded by the tonne and worth a small fraction — a torch, pickle, lemon juice or ultrasonic can ruin it; look for blue flash lines, gas bubbles and crazed lustre at 10x.
- Unheated fine ruby is now structurally scarce, so never pay no-heat prices without a major-lab report stating no indications of heating.
The Market: What Ruby Costs and Why
Ruby pricing obeys rules of its own — a size ladder steeper than any other coloured stone, a no-heat premium at its most violent, and a wide gap between auction headlines and what you should actually pay.
Ask a dealer to find you a fine three-carat unheated Burmese ruby and watch the face. Not the polite face — the one underneath. Sapphires of that description exist in quiet numbers; a good broker can show you several by Friday. The ruby equivalent may take months to surface, and when it does, the price will not resemble anything you extrapolated from smaller stones. That is the first thing to understand about the ruby market: it is not the sapphire market painted red. It is smaller, hungrier, and far less forgiving.
The steepest ladder in coloured stones
Every gem species prices per carat, and every species charges more per carat as size grows. Ruby simply does it more violently than anything else in the coloured trade. The reason is geological. Ruby forms in marble and basalt environments that rarely allow large, clean crystals to survive; chromium, the element that makes ruby red, also encourages fracturing. Big, clean, vividly red rubies are freaks of nature in a way that even fine sapphires are not.
So the ladder does not climb — it lurches. A fine two-carat stone does not cost twice a one-carat stone of the same quality; it costs considerably more than twice. Past three carats the escalation steepens again, and past five carats, for genuinely fine material, you leave the realm of formula altogether and enter negotiation between the very few people who own such stones and the very few who want them. As a practical rule: if your budget sits awkwardly between sizes, buy the smaller, finer stone. A superb 1.80 ct ruby will outlive your affection for a mediocre 3 ct one, and the market agrees with you.
The no-heat premium, at full strength
Every chapter of this book returns to the treatment ladder, and here is where it converts to money. In sapphire, an unheated stone commands a meaningful premium over its heated twin. In ruby, that premium is at its most extreme — because unheated rubies of fine colour are so much rarer than unheated sapphires, and because the buyers who want them are competing for a genuinely tiny supply.
How tiny? Consider one fact from the price-guide trade itself. GemGuide, the pricing reference used across the industry, cut its chart for unenhanced Burmese ruby from ten quality grades to four in its July/August 2026 issue — not as an editorial choice, but because goods across the finer grades could no longer reliably be found to price (Roskin Gem News Report, 19 June 2026). When the reference book gives up trying to grade what cannot be sourced, you are looking at scarcity in its purest commercial form.
The consequence for you: an unheated ruby with a strong laboratory report is never cheap, and a cheap one is never what it claims. If the price looks merciful, the report, the origin, or the treatment status is not what you think it is.
Auction headlines and your actual purchase
Burmese rubies hold the record per-carat prices among coloured stones at auction, and the great houses compete hard for stones carrying "pigeon blood" colour calls from the top laboratories. Those results are real, and they pull the whole market's psychology upward. But they describe a different economy from yours.
An auction record tells you what two determined bidders did to each other on one afternoon; it does not tell you what your ruby is worth.
Retail reality is calmer. The stones that make headlines are museum-calibre outliers — unheated, Burmese, large, and certified pigeon blood by laboratories whose colour call itself adds a premium. The stone you are likely buying is a fine heated Burmese or Mozambique ruby between one and three carats, and it trades on colour, cut and candour, not on catalogue drama. Do not let a saleroom number anchor you, in either direction: neither "rubies fetch millions, so this is a bargain" nor "I could never afford a ruby" is true.
Where honest value lives
Three places, in our experience. First, Mozambique stones of one to three carats with genuinely vivid colour. Mozambique produces ruby of superb saturation and clarity, and because the name lacks Burma's centuries of mystique, you pay for the stone rather than the passport. Second, slightly purplish reds. The market pays a sharp premium for the pure red to faintly pinkish-red ideal; a stone one step toward purple can be beautiful, lively and dramatically better priced — and under warm evening light, that purplish cast softens toward red anyway. Third, for those who prefer a deeper, garnet-like richness, Thai-character stones: darker, less fluorescent, long unfashionable, and priced accordingly. None of these is a compromise if it is the colour you cannot stop looking at. All three are compromises if you secretly wanted the auction stone.
Where buyers overpay: paying Burmese money for a Burmese name on ordinary material, and paying no-heat money without a report that proves it.
The certificate threshold
Below a modest spend, a report from a respected laboratory is prudent. Above it, it is non-negotiable — because in ruby, the gaps between the price universes are enormous and invisible to the eye. Unheated versus heated, heated versus flux-healed, ruby versus lead-glass composite: these distinctions can multiply or divide a price several times over, and no honest seller will resent you for insisting on independent confirmation. Our own rule of thumb: once a ruby costs more than you would casually absorb losing, the certificate from a major laboratory — stating treatment status and, for finer stones, origin — is part of the purchase, not an accessory to it. Every ruby we offer is assessed in Sydney by our FGAA-qualified gemmologist before it is offered, and for significant stones we will always support independent laboratory testing. A seller who discourages it is answering your question for you.
- Ruby's per-carat price ladder is the steepest in coloured stones — fine material escalates violently past 3 ct and 5 ct, so a smaller, finer stone usually beats a larger, mediocre one.
- The no-heat premium reaches its extreme in ruby: unheated fine goods are so scarce that GemGuide cut its unenhanced Burmese chart from ten grades to four in mid-2026 for lack of findable stones.
- Auction records for Burmese pigeon-blood rubies describe museum-calibre outliers, not the retail market — never let a saleroom headline anchor your price expectations.
- Honest value hides in vivid Mozambique stones of 1–3 ct, slightly purplish reds, and darker Thai-character material; above a serious spend, a report from a major laboratory is non-negotiable.
The Report and the Checklist
A laboratory report is the closest thing the ruby trade has to a common language — provided you read the right line first, and check the date.
A client once brought us a ruby with two reports for it, issued eighteen months apart by two respectable laboratories. Same stone, same weight to the second decimal. One said "indications of heating, minor residues in fissures". The other said only "indications of heating". Neither laboratory was wrong. The stone had almost certainly been re-worked between the two visits — and the seller, naturally, was showing buyers the friendlier document. The laboratories that carry weight
For an important ruby, five names do most of the world's heavy lifting. Gübelin and SSEF, both Swiss, are the conservative summit: measured language, cautious origin calls, and the reports most often cited at auction. GRS is ubiquitous in the Asian trade and popularised the colour terms — including "pigeon's blood" — that now drive so much pricing; its treatment codes are unusually granular, which is useful. AGL in New York is prized for the precision of its enhancement disclosure; American dealers of serious goods lean on it. Lotus Gemology in Bangkok specialises in ruby and sapphire and writes in refreshingly plain English.
Each house phrases the same finding differently. "No indication of heating", "no evidence of thermal enhancement" and "unheated" all mean the clean grade. Where they diverge is in grading what was added: GRS uses H codes — H for heat alone, then H(a), H(b) and H(c) for increasing amounts of residue left in healed fissures. Other laboratories write "minor", "moderate" or "significant residues". Learn to translate, because a GRS H(c) and a report reading "significant residues" describe the same commercial reality, and it is a long way below plain H.
Read the treatment line first
A habit worth building: when any report is put in front of you, cover the origin line with your thumb and read the comments and treatment fields before anything else.
The treatment line, not the origin line, decides which price universe a ruby lives in.
"No indication of heating" places the stone in the top universe. "Indications of heating" with no residues is the honest middle — the standard-heat market where most fine rubies live. Heat with residues means flux-assisted healing of fissures, and the amount of residue matters enormously to value. And if the report says "composite ruby", "lead-glass filled" or describes the stone as a "treated product", you are no longer reading about the same category of object at all, whatever the colour photograph suggests. In Sydney, Anna reads reports in exactly this order before a stone ever reaches our trays, and we would rather you did the same before it reaches your finger.
Origin is an opinion; the date is a fact
The origin line — Burma, Mozambique, Madagascar — is a professional opinion based on inclusions and chemistry, not a certificate of birth. Good laboratories say so on the document. Reasonable laboratories occasionally disagree. Pay for origin opinions from the top houses on expensive stones; do not treat origin as gospel on any stone.
The date, by contrast, is hard fact, and it matters more than most buyers realise. In June 2026 SSEF warned publicly about emeralds re-oiled after laboratory testing and sold with the older, cleaner report still attached. The same logic applies squarely to ruby: a fissured stone can be flux-healed, glass-filled or simply "improved" after certification, while the original document travels on beside it. An old report proves what the stone was, not what it is. On a significant purchase, ask for a recent report — or make re-testing at a laboratory of your choice a condition of sale. Any confident seller will agree.
Ten questions for any ruby seller
- Is this ruby treated, and how — heat only, heat with residues, or filling?
- Will you write the exact treatment on the invoice?
- Which laboratory issued the report, and when?
- May I have the stone re-tested at a laboratory I choose, at my cost, before the sale is final?
- If it comes back different from your description, what happens?
- Who calls it "pigeon blood" — a laboratory, or you?
- Is the origin stated as an opinion, and whose?
- What is your returns policy, in writing?
- How should this stone be cleaned and worn? (A seller who hesitates on glass-filled care has told you something.)
- Why is it this price? A good dealer can answer in one unembarrassed sentence.
Red flags
Certain patterns end the conversation for us. A composite stone offered at treated-ruby money — the two are different products, priced continents apart. "Pigeon blood" with no laboratory behind the phrase; it is a colour call, not a compliment. Any reluctance to write the treatment on the invoice — honest treatment survives daylight; silence is the tell. A years-old report on a fissured stone, waved away when you ask for a fresh one. And a price too good for the claim. Unheated Burmese rubies are now scarce enough that, as Chapter 5 records, the trade's own price guide has thinned its grades for lack of findable goods. When something that rare is offered cheaply, the claim is wrong far more often than the market is.
Where the money hides: the paperwork itself is the cheapest insurance in the trade. A few hundred dollars of laboratory fee on a five-figure stone is not an expense; it is the purchase. Where buyers overpay: paying report-word premiums — "pigeon's blood", "vivid" — rather than stone premiums. The report protects the price. Only the ruby earns it.
- Read the treatment line before the origin line: heat only, heat with residues, and composite/lead-glass are three different price universes, whatever the colour photo shows.
- Five laboratories carry the most weight for ruby — Gübelin, SSEF, GRS, AGL and Lotus — and the same finding wears different words at each; learn to translate the H codes and residue language.
- A report proves what the stone was on the test date, not what it is now: fissured rubies can be re-treated after certification, so insist on a recent report or re-testing as a condition of sale.
- Walk away from composite stones at treated-ruby prices, 'pigeon blood' with no laboratory behind it, sellers who won't write the treatment on the invoice, and prices too good for the claim.
Living with Ruby
How to wear, mount, clean and eventually hand down the king stone — and the one kind of ruby that must never meet a jeweller's torch unannounced.
The most reassuring thing we see in our Sydney workshop is a ruby ring that has been worn hard for thirty years. The claws are worn to slivers, the band is out of round, the engraving has softened to a whisper — and the stone is fine. Facet junctions still crisp, polish still bright. That is what corundum does. The mount is the consumable; the ruby is the constant.
Built for a working hand
Ruby sits at 9 on the Mohs scale, with only diamond above it among the stones you will meet in daily life. The practical meaning is this: ordinary household dust is largely quartz, hardness 7, and it slowly frosts the surface of glass, gold and most gemstones. It cannot touch ruby. Corundum also has no cleavage plane — no built-in direction of weakness, as topaz and kunzite have — and none of emerald's brittleness. Honest ruby, whether unheated, standard-heated or flux-healed, is a genuine everyday stone. It belongs in engagement rings, signet rings, bracelets that go through the dishes. The only sensible habits are universal ones: take rings off for the gym and the garden bed, because a sharp knock on a thin girdle edge can chip any gem ever cut.
The loud exception
Lead-glass composite ruby obeys none of the above, because much of what you are wearing is glass. The glass component is soft, and it is chemically fragile: lemon juice, household cleaners and the acid pickle on every jeweller's bench will etch it, turning a bright red stone into a crazed, whitish map of its own fracture network. A jeweller's torch finishes the job in seconds. If you own a composite — bought knowingly, at a composite price — treat it as an ornament: lukewarm soapy water, a soft cloth, occasional wear, nothing more. And declare it, in plain words, to any jeweller before a resize or a re-tip. If you have inherited or acquired a ruby whose treatment status is unknown, have it identified before any bench work is booked. In our experience it is the workshop, not the wearing, that kills composites.
Metal and mount
Ruby and yellow gold have kept company for a thousand years of crowns and reliquaries, and the pairing still works: warm metal deepens the perceived warmth of the stone, and a ruby leaning slightly toward garnet tones looks richer in 18ct yellow than it does loose on the pad. Platinum and white gold do the opposite — they sharpen the red, cool it, give it a modern edge — and they flatter stones with a whisper of pink. Neither is correct; audition the loose stone against both metals before the mount is made, in daylight, not under the shop halogens.
On money: spend on the stone, economise on the architecture. A plain four-claw solitaire or a clean bezel shows a fine ruby completely; an elaborate diamond halo is very good at distracting from a mediocre one, which is precisely why modest stones so often arrive wearing them. A bezel is the right answer for a ring worn daily and hard; claws give more light to a stone worn more gently. That choice costs little either way. The halo costs real money and adds nothing a good ruby needs.
Cleaning, by rung of the ladder
Care follows the treatment ladder that runs through this book. Unheated and standard-heat ruby: warm water, one drop of dishwashing liquid, a soft toothbrush, rinse, done — and the ultrasonic is generally safe if the stone is free of open fissures. Flux-healed ruby: the same soap and brush, but retire the ultrasonic; years of cavitation can worry at healed fractures. Lead-glass composite: cloth and lukewarm water only. Never ultrasonic, never steam, never anything from under the kitchen sink.
A ruby will outlast its claws, its owner and its century; make sure its paperwork travels with it.
The heirloom logic
Rubies survive generations; their stories usually do not. The single most valuable habit of ruby ownership costs nothing: keep the laboratory report physically with the stone, and a scan of it somewhere a grandchild could find. If a family ruby has no report, commission one — especially now. Fine unheated ruby has grown scarce enough (see Chapter 5) that a stone your grandmother bought casually may today sit in a category dealers struggle to source at all, and only a current report proves what it is. Update the insurance valuation every few years for the same reason. When a mount finally wears out, photograph the piece before the stone is lifted; the new ring will be better for knowing what the old one was.
In writing
The last instruction of this book is the shortest. Buy the red you cannot stop looking at — and have its treatment status written on the invoice in plain words: "no indications of heating", "heated", "healed fissures with flux residues", "lead-glass filled composite". Not a stock code. Words. A seller confident in the stone will write them without hesitation; a seller who hedges has answered a different question. Every ruby that leaves us carries its report and Anna's assessment, because we expect it to be read by someone who has not been born yet. That is the quiet privilege of this stone. You are not its owner so much as its current custodian, and the handover, done properly, takes one page.
- Honest ruby — unheated, heated, even flux-healed — is a true daily-wear stone at Mohs 9; only lead-glass composites demand cotton-wool care.
- Declare a stone's treatment status to any jeweller before bench work: torch and pickle destroy composites in seconds, so identify unknown rubies before repairs.
- Match metal to undertone — yellow gold enriches warmer, garnet-leaning reds; platinum sharpens pinkish stones — and spend on the ruby, not the halo.
- Keep the laboratory report with the stone, refresh valuations periodically, and insist the treatment status appears in plain words on the invoice.
