Foreword: Why We Wrote This Down
Our gemmologist on what she tells clients before they buy, including the parts that cost the house money to admit.
Most weeks, someone sets a ring on the desk in front of me and asks what it is. Usually they already own it. Sometimes they have owned it for twenty years. The paperwork, if there is any, says "genuine sapphire" and gives a weight, and that is all it says. Nothing about where the stone came from. Nothing about whether it has been heated, or fracture-filled, or is a synthetic overgrowth on a natural seed. Nothing that would have told the buyer whether the price they paid bore any relation to the thing they were handed.
I am rarely the one who has to break bad news. Most of those rings hold a perfectly decent stone. But "decent" and "fairly priced" are two different questions, and almost nobody had the second one answered before they signed.
Who is writing to you
I am the gemmologist for this house, FGAA-qualified, and I assess every stone we offer before it goes anywhere near a client: loose Ceylon sapphire from our own mines, Australian parti and blue, opal, emerald, ruby, and the stones set into our jewellery. Same desk in Sydney, same lamp, same order of checks. Grading is repetitive work when it is done properly, and that repetition is the only qualification worth mentioning. I have looked at a great many sapphires. Most were ordinary. That is precisely how you learn to recognise the ones that are not.
What is in here
This is what I tell clients before they buy, written down so that I stop saying it hurriedly across a counter. It includes the parts that cost us money to admit.
That the overwhelming majority of sapphire on the world market has been heated, that heating is legitimate, ancient and permanent, and that the sin is silence about it rather than the treatment itself. That an unheated stone is not automatically a finer stone, only a rarer one, and you should not pay the premium unless the beauty is there as well. That a certificate is worth exactly as much as the laboratory that issued it. That buyers overpay constantly to cross a round carat number, when a well-cut 0.92 ct will outshine a flat, windowed 1.05 ct in every light you will ever stand in.
We have yet to meet the buyer who regretted the smaller stone that was cut properly.
What you will be able to do
By the end you will be able to split colour into hue, tone and saturation and say out loud why one blue reads vividly and the one beside it reads grey. You will be able to tilt a stone and see whether light is leaking through the pavilion. You will know the three or four questions that actually decide value, and how to hear an evasive answer. Most importantly, you will know when to walk away, which is worth more than everything else in these pages combined.
How to use it
Read it through once in order. After that, treat it as a reference. The checklist near the end is the page to keep on your phone: it is built to be read standing at a counter, with a stone in front of you and someone waiting.
Do one thing this week. Go and look at sapphires you have no intention of buying. Ask to see three blue stones side by side under a single light, and say plainly that you are learning rather than shopping. Most good jewellers will oblige. Ten minutes of direct comparison will teach you more than a hundred photographs.
Nothing here is a pitch. If this handbook ends with you buying well from someone else, it has done its work. Buy the stone you cannot stop looking at. Everything in these pages exists so that you can tell the difference.

- "Decent stone" and "fairly priced" are separate questions. Most buyers only ever get the first one answered.
- Nearly all sapphire on the market is heated. Heating is legitimate and permanent; failing to disclose it is not.
- Cut beats carat weight. A well-cut 0.92 ct will out-perform a flat, windowed stone just over the 1.00 ct threshold.

Colour: The Lever That Moves Everything
Hue, tone and saturation are three separate things, and once you can see them apart you can see what a sapphire is actually worth.
Put two blue sapphires on a white tray. Same weight, same clarity, cut by the same hand in the same week. One can be worth several times the other, and the only difference is colour. That gap is the subject of this chapter.
Colour is not one quality. It is three, and they move independently. Learn to separate them and you will stop buying adjectives.
Hue: which blue, exactly
Hue is the colour's position on the spectrum. Very few sapphires are a single pure hue. Most blue Ceylon material carries a secondary hue, usually violet, sometimes green, and that secondary hue affects price more than most buyers expect.
A faint violet secondary is forgiving. It reads as warmth rather than a fault, and under lamplight it often lifts a stone. Green is harder. A green drift in a stone sold as blue tends to flatten it, reading cool and slate-like, and the trade discounts it accordingly. The distinction worth holding on to: green as an unwanted drift is a discount, while green as a stone's intended identity, as in a teal sapphire, is not.
Ask the seller to name the secondary hue and give you a rough proportion. "Blue with maybe fifteen per cent violet" is a dealer speaking. "Stunning blue" is nobody speaking.
Tone: light to dark
Tone is simply how light or dark the stone is. The sweet spot is medium to medium-dark. Lighter than that and colour thins out, particularly under a carat, where a pale stone can look like nothing much. Darker and the stone begins to close: less light returns through the crown, and what looked impressive under a bright shop lamp goes flat and near-black across a dinner table. A surprising number of stones sold as deep royal blue are, honestly, just too dark.
Tone is where a patient buyer saves real money without regret. A stone half a step lighter than the trade's ideal frequently costs meaningfully less and looks better in daylight and in photographs. If you live under warm indoor light, lean slightly darker. If you are outdoors, lean lighter.
Saturation: the real lever
Saturation is intensity — how much colour is there, and how pure. This is where value concentrates and where it is destroyed. Two things drain it: grey in the blues, brown in the warm colours. Neither makes a stone darker. Both make it duller.
Grey and brown are the modifiers that genuinely cost you beauty, and they are the hardest to unsee once noticed. Test for them against pure white paper rather than a black tray or a dark velvet pad, both of which are designed to flatter. Grey shows against white immediately.
Tone you can live with. Grey you will never stop noticing.
The vocabulary problem
Royal blue. Cornflower. Peacock. Ocean blue. None of these is a graded standard. A small number of laboratories add "royal blue" or "cornflower blue" as a descriptive comment on a report, applied to a narrow slice of material, but the terms are not standardised and do not travel reliably between labs. The rest are marketing language, and buyers overpay for them more than for anything else in this chapter. Pay for colour you can see. Never pay for a noun.
Zoning, and how the cut treats it
Colour rarely deposits evenly. Ceylon sapphire commonly grows in bands, and a skilled cutter orients those bands so the colour spreads evenly face-up. Fine zoning that is invisible face-up is not a defect, and it is a fair place to save. Zoning that shows face-up as a stripe or a pale window is a genuine fault, priced as one.
Cut style matters here. Step cuts such as emerald and Asscher are honest to the point of bluntness and will show zoning plainly. Brilliants scatter light and mask it. Neither is better; you simply need to know which you are looking at.
Look at it in three lights
View any stone in indirect daylight — a south-facing window here in Sydney, a north-facing one if you are in the northern hemisphere — then in warm incandescent, then under cool LED. Violet-blue sapphires often gain under lamplight. Green-modified stones usually prefer daylight. Some stones shift perceptibly, which is common in Ceylon material and not a flaw, but you want to know before the purchase rather than after.
Do this the week you receive the stone, and do it once with something you already own. Two minutes retrains the eye permanently.
The fancy colours
Pink, yellow, teal, green, parti and padparadscha are judged by the same three dimensions. In pink, brown or grey is the killer and a touch of purple is no sin. In yellow, look for a clean golden note and refuse brown. Teal and parti stones are judged as compositions: what matters is how cleanly the colours separate and how evenly they distribute across the face.
Padparadscha deserves care. It is a delicate blend of pink and orange, both present, neither dominating, in a light to medium tone. It is also one of the most abused terms in the trade — almost anything peachy gets called one, because the premium for a true stone is large. Ask for a report from a respected laboratory that uses the word.
Judge face-up
Look at the crown, not through the side. The side view is for diagnosis: zoning, tone, windows. The face-up view is the truth, because it is how the stone will be worn.
Anna, who assesses every stone we offer before it is listed, puts it this way: I grade face-up first, at arm's length, in daylight, and write down one sentence. Then I look for reasons to change my mind.
- Hue, tone and saturation move independently — a stone can have a fine hue and still be ruined by grey.
- Grey in blues and brown in warm colours are the true value killers; judge against white paper, never black velvet.
- "Royal blue", "cornflower" and "peacock" are descriptions, not grades. Pay for visible colour, not for a label.
- View every stone face-up and in at least three lights — daylight, incandescent and LED — before you decide.
Origin — What It Tells You, and What It Doesn't
Where a sapphire came from is a real value factor, the most romanticised word in the trade, and the single line on a report that buyers most reliably overpay for.
Ceylon. Kashmir. Burma. Three words that can move a price before anyone has looked through the stone. They are doing real work, because deposits do have tendencies. They are also doing a great deal of work they have not earned. Telling those two apart is what this chapter is for. In our experience a Sri Lankan report and a Madagascan report on two otherwise matched stones will be asked to carry materially different prices, and a great many buyers will pay the difference without ever comparing the two face-up in daylight.
Why origin carries any value at all
Origin is not pure marketing. Particular deposits produce particular tendencies: a range of hues, a habit of forming clean or included crystal, a typical tone, sometimes a characteristic softness or crispness to the way light returns. Origin also carries provenance, which is a legitimate thing to want. A stone from a source that no longer produces is scarce in a way that cannot be manufactured.
What origin is not is a guarantee of quality. Every source produces its full range, from magnificent to unsellable. A country name describes a population of stones. You are buying one.
The sources, and what each is genuinely known for
Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Our own ground, and three generations of our family's working life. Ceylon material is known for brightness and life: blues that stay open and vivid at lighter and medium tones rather than closing down into ink. The island's other gift is range. Pinks, yellows, violets, near-colourless stones, and padparadscha, that particular blend of pink and orange, come from this ground. Ceylon rough also tends to produce lively cut stones with good return of light.
Kashmir. The legend, and effectively a historic supply rather than a current one. The finest Kashmir sapphires are described as velvety: a slightly sleepy, diffused texture over a strong blue, so the colour appears to sit above the surface. These stones have set the highest prices ever paid for sapphire. Almost nothing offered as Kashmir today is what it claims to be, and genuine examples come with serious documentation and serious money.
Burma (Myanmar). Rich, deeply saturated royal blues, often with an inky depth Ceylon rarely shows. Burmese origin also carries real ethical and sanctions complexity, which varies by jurisdiction and changes over time. Ask any seller directly how a Burmese stone entered the market and when. A clear answer is a good sign.
Madagascar. The most important modern supply, and the honest surprise of the trade. Malagasy sapphire can be exceptional, and much of it is geologically similar to Ceylon material. It is also frequently sold with the origin simply left unmentioned. This is where quiet value lives.
Australia. Queensland and New South Wales. Historically dismissed for producing dark, steely blues, and historically undervalued as a result. It is also the world's principal source of parti sapphire — stones that divide into blue, green and gold zones within a single crystal — and one of the best sources of teal, alongside Madagascar and Montana. Australian material has been looked at far more carefully in the last decade than in the century before it, and rightly. Well cut, at the lighter end, it can be superb.
Thailand and Cambodia. Traditional deposits produced darker, often greenish material. Thailand's real significance is different: it is the world's cutting, heating and trading hub. A stone can pass through Thailand without being Thai, which is one reason origin claims get muddled.
Origin determination is an opinion
This matters more than most buyers realise. A laboratory infers origin from inclusion patterns and trace-element chemistry, compared against reference collections. Deposits overlap. Reputable labs therefore phrase conclusions with care and will sometimes decline to name a country at all. Treat a firm origin call on an inexpensive stone with scepticism, and read the exact wording rather than the headline.
A country of origin is a fact about a stone's past; beauty is a fact about the stone in front of you.
Where the money is, and where it is wasted
The premium worth paying is for beauty, then for documented rarity. The premium most often wasted is for a country name attached to an ordinary stone. A fine Madagascan or Australian sapphire will out-perform a mediocre Ceylon one in every way you actually experience: colour, brightness, presence on the hand. Buyers who accept this typically get a visibly better stone for the same budget.
Anna puts it plainly when clients ask her: I grade what is on my desk, not what is on the label.
This week
Find three sapphires of similar size and price, at least one from a source you consider second-tier, and rank them by eye in daylight before you look at any paperwork. Write your ranking down. Then read the reports. If your favourite is the one with the least glamorous origin, you have just learned more about buying sapphire than any certificate can teach you.
- Origin describes a population of stones, not the one in front of you: every source produces its best and its worst.
- Ceylon means brightness and range, Kashmir means velvety texture and historic scarcity, Burma means depth plus ethical complexity, Madagascar means frequently unlabelled excellence, Australia means blues that reward careful cutting and the world's principal supply of parti sapphire.
- Laboratory origin determination is a reasoned opinion from inclusions and trace elements, not a certainty. Read the exact wording.
- Paying for a country name rather than for beauty is one of the costliest mistakes in sapphire buying, and among the easiest to avoid.
Heat: The Word That Multiplies the Price
Almost every sapphire on earth has been through a furnace, and that is not the scandal — the scandal is when nobody tells you.
Two stones sit on the desk in front of me. Both a little under two carats, both Ceylon blue, both cut as cushions of near-identical proportion. Across a counter you would call them twins. One is priced at roughly three times the other. The difference is not colour, clarity or cut. It is whether, at some point in its journey, anyone put the stone in a furnace.
What heating actually does
Sapphire is aluminium oxide. Its blue comes from traces of iron and titanium sitting in the crystal lattice, and its haziness usually comes from silk: microscopic needles of rutile that grew inside the stone as it cooled underground. Held for hours at high temperature, those needles dissolve back into the crystal, and the titanium they release pairs with iron already in the lattice. That pairing is what the eye reads as blue. Milky becomes transparent. Blue-grey becomes blue. Sri Lankans have done this for centuries, originally in charcoal pits. The pale, sleepy material our miners call geuda was long treated as near-worthless until the trade understood that heat could wake the blue already sleeping inside it.
Two things follow, and they matter more than any argument about purity.
Nothing is added. The colour was already latent in the stone's own chemistry; heat completes a job the earth left half-finished. And the change is permanent. A cleanly heated sapphire behaves, for the rest of its life, exactly as an unheated one does: no special handling, no warning to your jeweller before a ring is sized. One caveat applies, and it applies to every sapphire regardless of treatment history — if fractures reach the surface, handle it gently and keep it out of an ultrasonic bath.
So heating is legitimate, ancient, and stable. Your working assumption should be that any sapphire offered anywhere in the world has been heated. That is the ordinary condition of the material, not a defect and not a deception.
Why untouched commands a multiple
Here is the part that costs money. Because heat improves stones that need improving, almost anything that would benefit has already been through the furnace. What survives unheated and still shows fine colour is therefore a very small intersection: stones that came out of the ground already right. Rarity does the rest, and collectors pay a premium for material in untouched condition much as they pay for an unrestored painting.
That premium is commonly a multiple rather than a percentage. Not fifteen per cent more. Two, three, sometimes several times more, and the gap widens as the colour improves and the size increases.
Be clear-eyed about what you are buying with it. You are not buying beauty. You are buying the fact that the earth alone did the work.
Unheated is a statement about history, not about how the stone looks in your hand.
Where buyers overpay, and where they can save without regret
The expensive mistake we see most often around treatment is paying the unheated premium for a stone that does not deserve any premium at all: a greyish, sleepy blue that would be unremarkable at half the price, sold at a multiple because a report says "no indications of heating".
The premium is only rational when the colour is worth preserving in the first place. A medium to medium-dark, vividly saturated blue with no grey modifier earns it. A washed, steely blue does not.
If your budget is finite, and most are, buy a well-heated stone of genuinely fine colour rather than an unheated stone of mediocre colour at the same money. You will look at it more. That is the whole test.
The treatments that should change the price dramatically
These are a different category entirely. They are not heat.
Lattice (beryllium) diffusion. Beryllium is driven into the crystal at high temperature, producing yellows, oranges and pinkish-oranges the stone never contained. Beryllium is a very small atom and travels a long way: in modest sizes the induced colour can reach right through the stone. That is why it cannot be polished off, and why detecting it is laboratory work rather than loupe work. Worth a small fraction of a comparable non-diffused stone.
Surface (titanium) diffusion. The same idea applied to blue, but here the colour genuinely does sit in a thin skin over pale material. Repolishing cuts into it, and a chip at the girdle shows the pale core beneath.
Lead-glass, cobalt-glass or borax filling. Fractures flooded with molten glass so they vanish optically. The stone is structurally compromised and permanently fragile: a jeweller's torch, an ultrasonic bath, even lemon juice can damage it. Worth a fraction, and it must be disclosed to whoever ever repairs the setting.
Synthetic overgrowth. Lab-grown material grown onto natural sapphire, sold as natural.
Dyeing. Colour flooded into fractures or surface reaching cavities. Impermanent.
None of these is automatically fraud either. Sold cheaply and honestly, glass-filled material has a place. Sold at the price of a merely heated stone, it is theft.
"Natural" and "unheated" are not the same claim
Read the wording. "Natural sapphire" means only that the stone grew in the ground rather than a laboratory. It says nothing whatsoever about treatment. A diffused, glass-filled stone is still a natural sapphire.
Be equally suspicious of the opposite: an unheated claim attached to a heated price. In a market where untouched material commands a multiple, nobody gives it away by accident.
Do this, this week
Take any sapphire you own or are considering and send the seller one sentence: Please confirm in writing whether this stone is heated or unheated, and whether any diffusion, fracture filling, glass, or dye has been applied.
The shape of the answer tells you almost everything. A straight answer arrives in a line. Hedging is information.
For any stone of real consequence, insist on a report from a laboratory that routinely gives treatment opinions on sapphire. As a rule of thumb: once a stone's price reaches the point where you would think twice about the loss, the report is cheap. Below that, written disclosure and a seller who will take the stone back is the sensible protection.
Our position, plainly
Every stone we offer is labelled heated or unheated. Anna assesses each one in Sydney before it goes on the shelf, and where a stone is heated we say so and price it as a heated stone. Where paperwork exists, you see it before you buy, not after. If we do not know something, we tell you that too.
We have never regarded heat as the problem. Silence is the problem.
- Assume any sapphire has been heated. Heating is ancient, permanent, adds nothing to the stone, and requires no special care. It is the ordinary condition of the material, not a defect.
- A fine unheated stone commands a multiple, not a percentage, because only stones that emerged already excellent are left untouched. Pay that premium only when the colour would be worth having regardless.
- Diffusion, glass or borax filling, synthetic overgrowth and dyeing are a different category. They should move the price to a fraction, and undisclosed they are grounds to walk away.
- "Natural sapphire" means only "not lab-grown". Get heated or unheated confirmed in writing, and get a laboratory report for any stone whose loss would sting.
Clarity, Cut and Carat: The Other Three Levers
Colour and origin get the attention, but the three quieter variables are where most sapphire buyers either overpay or find real value.
Weight is the number on the invoice. Spread is what you actually see. Two Ceylon cushions of exactly 2.10 ct can measure 8.4 mm across the face and 7.6 mm, and the larger-looking one is often the poorer: a pavilion cut too shallow, and a pale window in the centre where you can almost read the weave of the cloth beneath. The smaller stone holds its colour edge to edge. It is worth considerably more per carat, and on a hand it is the one people notice.
Colour and origin get the attention. These three decide whether you paid well for what you got.
Clarity: sapphire is not diamond, and should not be judged like one
Sapphire is a Type II stone. That is the trade's shorthand for a gem species that ordinarily grows with inclusions. A wholly loupe-clean sapphire in any size you would call a centre stone is rare enough to be a curiosity, and chasing one is usually a way of paying for the wrong thing. The working standard is eye-clean face-up: nothing visible to an unaided eye at normal viewing distance, roughly 30 centimetres, in ordinary light.
The inclusions you will meet, by name:
Silk — fine rutile needles, often in crossing sets. Light silk is not a defect. It scatters light into a soft, velvety glow, and because heat dissolves rutile, intact silk is one of the things a gemmologist looks for as evidence a stone has never been heated. Dense, oriented silk is what produces the six-rayed star in a cabochon. Silk is only a fault when it thickens into visible cloud.
Crystals — small foreign minerals, sometimes tiny transparent zircons. Cosmetic unless large or centrally placed.
Feathers — internal fractures, often iridescent. Position matters far more than size.
Healed fractures, sometimes called fingerprints — old breaks that resealed as the crystal continued to grow. They read as delicate lace. Structurally sound.
Colour zoning — straight or hexagonal bands of stronger and weaker colour. dealt with at length in the colour chapter. For clarity purposes the test is narrow: can you see it face-up? If you can, it is a deduction. If you cannot, it is not.
The durability question is narrower than most buyers fear. What matters is whether a fracture reaches the surface, and where. A surface-reaching feather at or near the girdle is the one to refuse: the girdle takes the pressure of setting and the knock of a doorframe. A feather sealed deep in the pavilion, or a crystal in the crown, threatens nothing. So do not ask only what the inclusion is. Ask where it sits, and whether it breaks the surface.
Cut: the most underrated lever, and the one buyers judge worst
Diamond cutting works to prescribed proportions, with one goal: maximum light return: proportions are prescribed, and the goal is maximum light return. Coloured-stone cutting is a negotiation. Pavilion depth is a colour dial. Cut deeper and light travels further through the stone and comes back more saturated, which rescues a pale sapphire. Cut shallower and a very dark stone lightens and lives. The cutter serves colour first and brilliance second, which is why sapphire proportions vary legitimately from stone to stone.
Two faults recur. Windowing is the common one: a pavilion cut too shallow, so light passes straight through instead of bouncing back, leaving a transparent patch in the centre. It kills colour precisely where the eye lands. Extinction is the opposite — a pavilion cut too deep, producing dead black zones. A little extinction is normal and even flattering. The question is whether the dark areas move and shrink as you tilt the stone, or sit fixed in one place.
Windowing persists because of weight. Rough is bought by the carat, and a native cut that keeps a fat, shallow pavilion yields a heavier finished stone. The market pays for weight. It rarely pays for performance. This is the single largest arbitrage available to a patient buyer: a well-cut 1.60 ct sapphire will out-perform a windowed 2.10 ct one on the hand, and cost less.
Recutting is real. A poorly proportioned stone re-cut properly commonly gives up ten to twenty per cent of its weight, sometimes more, and can look transformed.
Do this in the next stone you handle. Hold it table-up over a line of printed text at about 30 centimetres. If you can read the print through it, it is windowed. Then rock the stone slowly through 45 degrees under one light source and watch the whole face. Colour should stay alive across all of it, corner to corner. That test takes ten seconds and outperforms most certificates.
Carat: weight is not size
Sapphire price per carat climbs in steps, not along a smooth line. The steps sit at round numbers and at genuine rarity thresholds: 1.00, 2.00, 3.00, 5.00 carats. A 1.95 ct stone and a 2.05 ct stone are visually indistinguishable. The second one crosses a psychological border and is priced accordingly. Buying deliberately just below a threshold is the cleanest saving available to you, and you give up nothing you can see.
Then remember what a carat is. It is 0.2 grams — weight, not dimension. Sapphire is appreciably denser than diamond, so a one-carat round sapphire measures around 6.0 mm where a one-carat round diamond measures about 6.5 mm. Depth also hides weight: a stone with a deep pavilion carries mass nobody will ever see.
You do not wear carats. You wear millimetres.
So ask for the millimetre dimensions of every stone on your shortlist, length by width by depth, and mark them on a ruler against your own finger. That habit will change which stone you choose.
We cut in our own factory, which means we can choose colour and proportion over yield, and we publish millimetre dimensions beside carat weight for every stone we offer. Anna assesses each one face-up, at arm's length, before it is ever listed. As she puts it: I judge a stone the way you will wear it, not the way a loupe sees it.
- Sapphire is a Type II gem: inclusions are normal. Judge it eye-clean face-up at 30 cm, not loupe-clean, and note that fine silk can be desirable rather than a fault.
- Only surface-reaching fractures at or near the girdle genuinely threaten durability. Ask where an inclusion sits, not merely what it is.
- Windowing is the commonest fault in sapphire and the easiest to detect: if you can read printed text through the table, the pavilion is too shallow and the colour is dying in the centre.
- Price per carat rises in steps at 1.00, 2.00, 3.00 and 5.00 ct. Buying just below a threshold saves real money with no visible loss, and millimetre dimensions predict how large a stone looks far better than carat weight.
The Report: How to Read It, and What It Will Not Tell You
A gemmological report is a technical description, not a verdict on beauty — here is how to read one with confidence, and where its authority ends.
The most common way a gemmological report is misread is not a misunderstanding of terminology. It is reading only the part you hoped to see. A buyer finds the line "no indications of heating", feels the small lift of reassurance, and never returns to the document again. The rest of the page is where the useful information lives.
A report is a technical description written by people who have handled tens of thousands of stones. Learn its grammar and it becomes a plain-spoken document.
The report, line by line
Identification. Look for the word natural. "Natural sapphire" or "natural corundum" is the statement you want. Look for the word natural. Trade nomenclature is on your side here: an unqualified "sapphire" means the natural material, because a synthetic must always be labelled as one. So the words to read for are synthetic, created and laboratory-grown. Anywhere on the page, any of them changes what you are buying entirely. If the identification line is unusually bare, query it — but do not read guilt into brevity.
Weight and measurements. Carat weight to two decimal places, dimensions in millimetres to a tenth or a hundredth. These exist so you can verify that the stone in your hand is the stone on the paper. Use them.
Cut and shape. Purely descriptive. "Cushion, mixed cut" tells you the outline and the faceting style. It is not a grade and implies nothing about performance.
Colour. A description, not a rank. Some labs use plain terms; others add trade colour names such as royal blue or cornflower. Those names are the issuing lab's own vocabulary, applied to their own reference standards. They are not an industry-wide grading scale.
Treatment. The most consequential line on the page, and the reason reports exist at all. Language is cautious by design: "no indications of heating" is a statement about evidence, not a guarantee. You may also see notes on fissure filling, lattice diffusion, or residues in surface-reaching fractures. Read these carefully; they matter far more to value than the colour adjective above them.
Origin. Where offered at all, this is expressed as an opinion: "Sri Lanka (Ceylon)". A responsible lab will say inconclusive when the geological fingerprints overlap, which they often do.
Two kinds of report, two kinds of expense
A straightforward identification report confirms what the stone is and whether it has been treated. It is inexpensive and appropriate for most stones.
A fuller report adds an origin opinion and detailed treatment findings, costs considerably more, and takes longer. The rule of thumb is simple: if the price you are being asked to pay is materially driven by an unheated claim or a prestige origin, the stone should carry a report from a laboratory with the credentials to make that call. If it is not, you are paying for paper. A modest heated blue does not need a Swiss origin opinion, and buying one is money that would have been better spent on a better stone.
Whose name on the letterhead
For coloured stones, the internationally respected laboratories are GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, AGL, GRS and Lotus. GIA is the largest and the most consistently conservative. SSEF and Gübelin, both Swiss, are the traditional authorities on origin and heat for important stones. AGL is known for detailed commentary that goes beyond bare identification. GRS is widely used in the trade and known for its colour terminology. Lotus specialises in corundum.
Reports from laboratories you cannot find, and "certificates" issued by the seller on their own stationery, carry no independent weight. This week, do one thing: take any report you hold, find the issuing lab's online report-check database, and enter the number. If the record does not appear, ask why.
What no report will tell you
It will not tell you whether the stone is beautiful. It will not tell you whether the cut performs, whether there is a window through the middle, whether the colour collapses into extinction under a lamp. It will not tell you whether the price is fair.
Two stones with identical reports can differ in value by a wide margin, and the report will not hint at which is which.
The order to read it in
Treatment first. Origin second. Then put the paper down and go back to the stone.

- Read the treatment line before anything else, then origin, then go back and look at the stone itself.
- Pay for a full origin-and-treatment report only when the price is materially driven by an unheated claim or a prestige origin; otherwise an identification report is enough.
- GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, AGL, GRS and Lotus carry weight. A seller's own "certificate" carries none — verify every report number on the issuing lab's own database.
- Origin and heat findings are expert opinion, cautiously worded. "Inconclusive" is a sign of integrity, not of a problem with the stone.
The Checklist — and the Red Flags
Ten questions that protect you in any showroom on any continent, and the nine warning signs that should end a conversation.
A client once sent us a photograph of a sapphire she was about to buy overseas. The stone looked superb. The paperwork, when she forwarded it, described the gem as "natural sapphire, untreated, Ceylon origin" on a letterhead belonging to the shop selling it. No lab. No signature. No gemmologist named. She asked whether that mattered. It was the only question she needed to ask, and asking it saved her a great deal of money.
Most poor purchases are not the result of a sophisticated deception. They are the result of a question nobody asked. What follows is the list. Take a photograph of this page and carry it with you into any showroom, on any continent.
Part one: ten questions for any seller, anywhere
1. Is this stone natural or laboratory-grown, and has it been heated? A good answer is immediate and specific: "Natural, standard heat treatment, no filler, no diffusion." Or: "Natural and unheated, and here is the report that supports it." An evasive answer wanders — "all sapphires are treated somehow", "it's natural". Vagueness here is the most reliable warning sign in the trade.
2. Will you put that in writing on the invoice? Not on a business card. On the document you pay against. A seller who will state treatment verbally but not in writing has told you exactly what their confidence is worth.
3. What is the origin, and who determined it? "Ceylon" from a seller who mined it is one thing. "Ceylon" as a shorthand for "blue and nice" is another. Ask how they know: own production, a named supplier, or a laboratory opinion. "Probably Sri Lankan" is an honest answer. "Definitely Kashmir" without a report is not.
4. Is there a laboratory report, and from which laboratory? The name of the lab is the information. An internationally recognised laboratory that publishes its methodology carries weight; an unfamiliar acronym carries none until you have looked it up. Do that before you pay, not after.
5. May I see the stone in daylight, and under a second light source? Ask to take it to a window or outside, then look at it again under warm indoor light. A good seller hands it over. A stone that only performs under one carefully aimed spotlight is a stone being staged.
6. What are the millimetre dimensions? Carat weight alone tells you very little about how a stone will look on a hand. Two 2-carat sapphires can differ by more than a millimetre across the face. Millimetres are where your money becomes visible.
7. Is it eye-clean face-up, and do any inclusions reach the surface? Surface-reaching fractures matter for durability and for how the stone will survive a jeweller's bench. Ask to be shown the exact position of anything internal, under loupe, on the table in front of you.
8. What is the return policy, and how many days do I have? You want a stated period, in writing, long enough to have the stone independently examined. Seven days is workable. "No returns on loose stones" on a significant purchase is a closed door.
9. Who set this price, and on what basis? A confident seller will walk you through it: colour, clarity, cut precision, size, treatment status, origin. A weak answer substitutes a story about the previous owner, or a "was" price that never existed.
10. If I had this independently examined, would you stand behind everything you have told me? Watch the face, not the words. The answer should be one syllable long.
The sin in this trade is not treatment. It is non-disclosure — and every question above is really the same question asked ten ways.
Part two: the red flags
- An unheated claim at a heated price. Unheated material of fine colour commands a real premium. If the premium is absent, the claim almost certainly is too.
- A "certificate" issued by the seller. That is a description, not an independent opinion.
- Refusal to put treatment in writing. Walk.
- Pressure, deadlines, "another buyer is coming". A good stone does not need a countdown.
- One light, one angle, held at arm's length. Ask to move it. If you cannot, you have your answer.
- A price far below the market for the claimed combination of origin, treatment and quality. If it seems impossibly cheap, the claim is wrong somewhere: usually treatment, sometimes origin, occasionally species.
- Vague origin language. "Ceylon-type", "Kashmir-like", "Burmese colour" describe an appearance, not a place.
- Oiling or filling. Oil seeps into surface-reaching fractures and hides them for a while. Glass hides them convincingly and does not wash out, at the cost of a stone that is fragile for life. - No return period at all.
Where buyers actually save
Not by hunting bargains. By buying a well-cut, honestly disclosed heated sapphire in an exact millimetre size rather than an under-documented unheated claim at a premium. Money spent on cut and disclosure is never wasted. Money spent on an unverified word usually is.
Anna's rule is simple: she answers all ten of these questions before a stone is offered, because a buyer should never have to prise them out. A good seller anywhere in the world will welcome every question on this page.
- Ask whether the stone has been heated, then ask for that answer in writing on the invoice — verbal disclosure that will not be written down is worth nothing.
- The name of the laboratory is the information. A report from the seller's own letterhead is a description, not an independent opinion.
- Insist on seeing the stone in daylight and under a second light source. A gem that performs only under one aimed spotlight is being staged.
- If the price is far below the market for the claimed origin, treatment and quality, the claim is wrong somewhere — usually the treatment.
Living with a Sapphire: Settings, Wear and Care
A sapphire will outlast the ring you put it in, and probably you as well; the craft lies in choosing a setting, a metal and a routine worthy of that lifespan.
Look at the underside of a Victorian sapphire ring. The shank is usually worn thin, the claws reduced to whiskers, the engraving softened to a suggestion of itself. The sapphire looks exactly as it did the day it was set. That asymmetry is the whole subject of this chapter: you are not caring for the stone so much as caring for everything you have attached to it.
Hardness is not toughness
Sapphire is corundum, Mohs 9, second only to diamond on that scale. It is why sapphire has been a favourite engagement stone for generations: it survives desks, steering wheels, prams and dishwater without dulling. Hardness, though, describes only resistance to scratching. Toughness is a separate property, and it describes resistance to breaking. Clean sapphire is good at both, having no true cleavage plane to split along, though it can part along twin planes if struck exactly wrong.
The exception matters enormously. A stone with a fracture that reaches the surface, or one that has been fracture-filled with glass or resin, behaves like something far softer than Mohs 9 suggests. The fracture is a fault line, and knocks, heat and chemicals all find it. So the first question is not how to set the stone but what the stone is. If nobody can tell you what has been done to it, assume it is fragile and set and clean it accordingly.
A sapphire cannot be worn out. Only the ring around it can.
Settings, and what each one costs you
Bezel. A continuous wall of metal around the girdle. Maximum protection, nothing to snag, and the modern favourite for good reason. It also excludes some side light, which can make an already-dark stone read darker. A rub-over bezel in yellow gold, by contrast, can gently warm a pale stone.
Claws. Maximum light, maximum exposure. Four claws reveal more of the outline; six hold more securely on a stone you will never take off. Cushions and emerald cuts want a claw on each corner, because corners are where chips begin.
Halo. Buys apparent size honestly and cheaply. A halo is almost always a less expensive route to presence than a larger centre stone. Two candid costs: it creates a dozen small crevices that trap hand cream, and a bright white halo raises contrast, which flatters a vividly saturated blue and can drain a pale one.
Three-stone and toi et moi. Here the discipline is matching depth of colour rather than matching size. Two sapphires of the same tone at different sizes look intentional. Two of the same size at different tones look like a mistake.
East-west. An oval, emerald or marquise laid across the finger. It suits elongated stones and reads modern without ornament.
Setting is also where a stone is quietly improved or ruined. Seat depth is the variable. Set too deep, a sapphire loses light through its pavilion and darkens; set too high, it snags. A good setter will lift a dark stone slightly and seat a bright one lower. One instruction to give in writing: keep the back open. A closed back on a coloured stone starves it.
Metal changes the colour you see
Warm metals lift cool stones. A slightly greyish or pale blue often gains a degree of life in yellow gold, and teal reads greener. White metals keep a blue reading true, which is what you want for a fine, saturated Ceylon blue. Rose gold sits opposite green-blue on the colour wheel, so a teal sapphire in rose reads cooler and cleaner by contrast; rose also flatters pink and peach stones. A pale yellow sapphire can vanish into yellow gold, so give it white claws.
On alloys, honestly: 18ct holds the richest colour and is easier for a jeweller to work and re-tip; 9ct is harder on the surface but paler and more brittle over decades; 14ct is the sensible compromise. White gold is rhodium-plated and needs re-plating every few years. Platinum costs more per gram and never needs it. If maintenance annoys you, buy platinum once.
Care you can start this week
Warm water, one drop of dish soap, a soft toothbrush, rinse, lint-free cloth. Once a fortnight is ample. Brush from underneath, because that is where the film is. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaning entirely for anything fractured, filled or of uncertain treatment. Remove the ring for weights, gardening and pools; chlorine attacks the alloy, not the sapphire. Have the claws checked every twelve to eighteen months, and sooner if the ring starts catching on knitwear. Store it in its own pouch, away from opal, emerald and pearl.
Anna puts it plainly when she hands a stone over: this will be here long after both of us. Set it so someone can wear it, not so it can be admired in a safe.
- Mohs 9 means sapphire resists scratching, but a fractured or filled stone breaks like something far softer. Know the treatment before you choose the setting.
- Bezel protects and can warm a cool stone; claws maximise light; a halo is the cheapest honest route to apparent size. Seat depth, set by the jeweller, decides how the colour finally reads.
- Warm metals lift cooler or paler stones; white gold and platinum keep a saturated blue true. 18ct for colour, platinum if you dislike re-plating.
- Warm water, mild soap, soft brush, brushed from underneath. No ultrasonic or steam on anything fractured, filled or unknown. Claws checked every twelve to eighteen months.
Lab-Grown, and the Honest Question of Why You Are Buying
On synthetic sapphire, the investment question, and the only reason to buy that survives contact with reality.
A synthetic sapphire grown in a Paris workshop around 1910 is, today, more than a hundred years old. Set it in a worn platinum mount, let the facet junctions soften with a century of wear, and it will pass in a shop window as an heirloom Ceylon stone. We see one every few months, usually brought in by someone who has just inherited a ring and wants it valued for insurance. The stone is often lovely. It is simply not what the family believed it was.
That is the first thing to understand about laboratory-grown sapphire. It is not new, and it is not a fake.
The material is genuinely sapphire
Laboratory-grown sapphire is crystalline aluminium oxide — corundum — coloured by the same trace elements as the material we dig out of Sri Lankan gravel. Same chemistry, same crystal structure, same hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, same refractive index, same dispersion. A gemmologist testing it with a refractometer and a polariscope reads the same numbers. It will not cloud or fade, and it resists scratching exactly as natural sapphire does. It is not cubic zirconia and not glass; those are different materials that merely look vaguely similar, and a loupe plus a moment of attention separates them.
The correct word is synthetic or laboratory-grown. Never simulant or imitation, which mean something else entirely.
How it is grown, and why that affects the price
Flame fusion (Verneuil). Alumina powder is dripped through an oxyhydrogen flame onto a rotating pedestal, where it builds into a carrot-shaped boule in a matter of hours. The process has run at industrial scale since the beginning of the twentieth century — corundum by the tonne for watch crystals, instrument bearings and inexpensive jewellery. Under magnification this material often shows curved growth striae and spherical gas bubbles, neither of which nature makes. It is the cheapest gem-quality corundum on earth.
Flux growth. Alumina is dissolved in a molten flux and allowed to crystallise slowly, over months. Hydrothermal growth uses superheated water under pressure on a seed plate. Both are slower, costlier, and produce stones whose internal features can genuinely resemble natural inclusions: wispy flux residues that mimic fingerprints, chevron growth zoning that takes a trained eye to read. Separating these from natural stones is real laboratory work, not a loupe judgement. That is why a report from an independent laboratory matters on any significant purchase.
What actually differs
Not beauty. Not durability. Not colour, which can be grown to precisely the medium-dark, vividly saturated blue with no grey modifier that nature yields rarely and charges accordingly.
What differs is rarity, and therefore price, and therefore resale. A grown stone can be made again next month in the same size and the same colour. A natural 4-carat Ceylon blue of that exact colour, clean and well cut, cannot. Lab-grown stones have very little secondary market; assume, for planning purposes, that resale is close to zero.
None of which makes lab-grown a poor choice. If you want a 6-carat blue cushion on a budget of a few thousand dollars, laboratory-grown is the honest, sensible answer, and anyone who sneers at it is selling something. It is a reasonable choice for earrings, for travel pieces, and for anyone who simply prefers not to spend at natural-stone levels.
We deal in natural stones because our work is finding and cutting what the earth made, and because provenance is the story we can actually tell: this gravel, this cutter, this assessment in Sydney. That is a preference about craft, not a verdict on your choice.
The one rule that is not negotiable
You are entitled to know which one you are buying, in writing, before you pay.
Do this. On every quote, ask for one line stating natural or laboratory-grown, the growth method if grown, and all treatments. If a seller will not put it on the invoice, walk. And this week, take any inherited "sapphire" you own to a qualified gemmologist before you insure it as natural. It costs very little and it settles the question permanently.
Where this goes wrong is narrow but real: natural prices paid for undisclosed synthetic, usually in antique goods, holiday markets, and estate pieces nobody ever tested. The place they save without regret is choosing grown material knowingly, or choosing a smaller natural stone of finer quality within the same budget.
The investment question, answered honestly
We are not financial advisers and will not pretend a gemstone is a financial instrument.
Realising value on a stone requires the right buyer at the right moment. You bought at retail; you would sell at something nearer wholesale, less commission, less time. Fine, rare, well-documented natural stones have historically held their value better than ordinary ones. That is the most that can honestly be said, and anyone saying more is guessing in a confident voice.
Why you are buying
Buy the stone you cannot stop looking at. Buy the one you will still turn to the light in eleven years. Buy for the daughter who will inherit it and ask where it came from, and buy the documentation so that you can tell her.

- Laboratory-grown sapphire is real sapphire — same chemistry, hardness and durability. It is not cubic zirconia, and flame-fusion synthetics have been made in quantity for over a century, so an antique stone is not automatically natural.
- What separates natural from grown is rarity, not beauty. Price and resale differ; appearance and wear do not. For a large stone on a modest budget, lab-grown is a legitimate choice.
- Insist on one line in writing on every quote: natural or laboratory-grown, growth method, and all treatments. Have inherited stones tested by a gemmologist before insuring them as natural.
- A gemstone is not a financial instrument. Retail is not wholesale, and selling needs the right buyer at the right moment. Buy the stone you cannot stop looking at.
