Somewhere in the past, a very wise jeweller matched gemstones to wedding anniversaries — and handed every spouse since a cheat sheet. Here are the years that matter, and how to use them well.
The headline years
5th — Sapphire. The first gemstone milestone: fidelity's stone (see sapphire meaning) for a marriage finding its stride. A pendant with a blue sapphire is the classic play.
15th — Ruby, 40th — Ruby again. Passion's stone claims two anniversaries; the 40th is its grand occasion. Our ruby guide covers buying one well.

30th — Pearl. Nature's only grown gem for three decades of patience.
45th — Sapphire's crown. The great sapphire anniversary. A significant stone — perhaps unheated — marks it properly.
Others worth knowing: opal shines at the 14th (Australia makes that easy — see ours), aquamarine at the 19th, and the 60th is diamond, as the Queen taught everyone.
Using the list without being ruled by it
The list is a doorway, not a law. Two better rules: her stone beats the year's stone (a birthstone or a colour she adores always wins), and upgrade beats introduce — resetting an existing stone into a new piece for a milestone is among the most moving commissions we do.
Make it personal
Anniversary gifts carry the story of specific years — engraving dates, birthstones of children, two stones for two people (toi et moi was invented for this). Design something bespoke and the gift becomes unrepeatable — which is rather the point.
