Green owns 2026. Emerald prices have climbed steeply — industry trackers put average per-carat values up more than 60% since late 2024 — and the rich, vivid greens of fine emerald now headline everything from heirloom-style yellow-gold settings to sleek modern signets.
Why emeralds are surging
Part of it is fashion: 2026's love affair with saturated colour — deep greens, blues and purples — has made emerald the statement stone of the year, and vintage-inspired gold settings its natural home. Part of it is the same scarcity story driving rubies: fine natural emeralds are finite, and demand for certified, traceable stones keeps rising.
What makes a fine emerald
- Colour is (almost) everything. The prize is a vivid bluish-green with strong saturation — alive in daylight, deep by evening.
- Embrace the jardin. Emeralds naturally carry internal gardens of inclusions. Character is expected; glassy-clean stones warrant scepticism.
- The emerald cut exists for a reason. The stepped rectangular cut protects the stone's corners and shows its colour in broad, calm planes.
- Ask about treatment. Most emeralds receive minor oiling — traditional and accepted — but it should always be disclosed.
Caring for emeralds
Emeralds are hard but not indestructible. Keep them away from ultrasonic cleaners and harsh detergents — warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth are all they ever need.
