July Birthstone — Ruby

Ruby is the birthstone of July, and the gemstone of the fifteenth and fortieth wedding anniversaries. Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral, corundum, at 9 on the Mohs scale, which makes ruby the soundest red stone for a ring worn every day. Every ruby here is natural, assessed in-house by our FGAA-qualified gemmologist with its treatment stated in writing, and set to order in 9K to 18K gold.

Care

Warm soapy water; usually safe in an ultrasonic and steam unless the stone is glass-filled, which we would never sell undisclosed.

Why ours. Ceylon has produced ruby for centuries; our unheated pigeon-blood stone was assessed on our own bench. Rubies are routinely heated, which is stable and accepted when disclosed. Glass-filled and dyed rubies exist in the market and are damaged by lemon juice; ours are stated in writing.

The question to ask of any ruby is the one we answer before you ask it: is it treated, and by what method? Heat is routine and accepted; lead-glass filling and dye are not, because a glass-filled ruby can be damaged by something as ordinary as lemon juice. Ours are disclosed to the method. Sri Lanka is among ruby's historic producers, and the house's unheated pigeon-blood stone sits beside the finished pieces for anyone who would rather give the stone and design the setting together.
