November Birthstone — Topaz & Citrine

November has two birthstones, topaz and citrine. Topaz runs from the deep London blue and bright Swiss blue to the sherry-coloured imperial topaz; citrine is the golden quartz that brings warmth into the room. Blue topaz is the gemstone of the fourth wedding anniversary and citrine of the thirteenth. Every stone here is natural, assessed in-house by our FGAA-qualified gemmologist, and set to order in 9K to 18K gold.

Topaz in a setting that shields it from knocks; citrine is easy-going

Care

Warm soapy water. Avoid ultrasonic and steam for topaz; protect it from sharp knocks. Citrine is usually safe in an ultrasonic.

Why ours. Blue topaz and citrine set to order in gold, with the treatment said out loud rather than buried. The vast majority of blue topaz is colourless topaz turned blue by irradiation and heat, permanent and regulated; most citrine is heat-treated amethyst. We say so on every listing.

November is the month that shows how much quiet processing sits behind ordinary jewellery, so we say it plainly: the vast majority of blue topaz began colourless and was turned blue by irradiation and heat, a permanent and regulated treatment, and most citrine is heat-treated amethyst. Neither makes the stone less natural; both belong in writing, and both are on every listing. Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale but has a cleavage, so we set it to shield it from knocks; citrine at 7 is easy-going. For a gift, the blue topaz studs and drops carry the month's colour without a sizing gamble.
